Stylish gates. Gates with a wicket: tips for choosing, features of the use of various designs and design options (110 photos)

The first thing a summer cottage begins with is a gate with a wicket. And since this is the first thing in our opinion, it would be nice for the design to be attractive and reliable. If you decide to find for yourself a suitable option for a specific piece of land, you will need to thoroughly understand this issue.

Appointment

Swing gates equipped with a wicket are of universal importance for the private sector. They serve as a tool for the passage of equipment and people, as well as reliable protection against uninvited guests but also from cold winds. This is especially true in the cold season, because the wind can harm both people and the vegetation that is planted next to the gate.

Gates with a wicket for summer cottages, their features and advantages:

  • To create a gate, there is a huge selection of materials, and this gives you all the possibilities to translate into reality all your design decisions.
  • Three sectional overhead hinges are used to fasten the wicket door, which gives an increased margin of safety.
  • They have increased protection against burglary, due to the lack of they have no visible fasteners.
  • Everything can be created literally from scratch according to your plan and you can get a gate with a unique design at the exit. For this, they usually use ready-made sketches from the Internet and drawings, a wide variety design solutions and materials (forging, automation, accessories, etc.).

Classification by opening method

Double-leaf gates made of metal - in such doors, they turn around the side pillars when opened. They can be opened both to the outer and to the inner part of the territory. Installation of automation for remote control is possible.

Single wing sliding gates. Opened by moving one gate leaf. The sash moves along the guides located at the top and bottom of the door or along the rigid guide of the console.

Swing gates with a wicket

They are divided into single-leaf or double-leaf. The sashes are attached to the frame with hinges. Below are the design options based on the type of sash.

With a netting - a great choice if you need to fence off a place with vegetation without blocking the path of the sun's rays. The mesh does not have a high price, does not require constant maintenance, it is quite simple to install.

With profiled sheet - reliable and durable doors. Equipped with a frame upholstered with profiled sheet. If you look at the photos of such gates on the Internet, they look beautiful and aesthetically pleasing; you can also add forged details for decoration. They fully justify their price and are currently the most common option;

A wrought iron gate is a massive product with a complex installation process. Different from other types original design.

The structure will serve its owner for many years, however, it is worth counting on the fact that the price of such gates will not be lower than a certain level.

Wrought iron gates can be of two types:

From metal - consist entirely of metal parts. They look great and therefore have a high price tag.

Combined - made of different materials and decorated with forged details. They are very popular and cheaper.

The manufacture of forged gates is almost the same as the manufacture of gates from corrugated board. A sketch is drawn up, forged elements are applied to it.

On the Internet, you can find a lot of options and make your own from them. All parts are connected and installed using a welding machine.

From the above, we can conclude that for all positive aspects, forged gates have only two drawbacks: high price, complicated manufacturing process.

If you are planning to make a gate with your own hands, you will need step-by-step instructions that will help you calculate all the nuances of the work and facilitate the process of creating them.

Before purchasing the necessary materials, decide on the type of gate that is suitable for your particular case, and in a convenient way their settings.

Types of structures

There are many types of gates that can be made of different materials and equipped with special mechanisms. A wide selection allows you to create a home-made gate based on the characteristics of the room or territory, your needs and the frequency of operation.

Before making a gate, you should study the main types of designs that are popular.

Sliding

Sliding canvases are divided into several categories. Depending on your preferences, you can choose the option you need. For each type of structure, it will be necessary to free up a free area along the fence so that the sash can open freely.

There are cantilever sliding structures, suspended and retractable. The structure of such canvases involves moving along rails and other metal profiles.

Hanging options are not popular for operation on private territory, since the ride height is limited by the upper profile, on which the canvas is fixed. The flaps also move along this profile.

Some country house owners set fan designs, which got this name due to their appearance.

Retractable canvases that move along the rail along the wall are also not popular in snowy and northern cities.

In order for the sash of the sliding structures to move freely along the rail, it will be necessary to constantly remove ice and other debris, which is not always comfortable in winter time.

Cantilever canvases are considered the most optimal design sliding gates. The canvas is rigidly attached to the beam, which moves along the cantilever unit and moves the sash behind it. Despite the fact that the structure of the products is complex, they work perfectly in the winter season, as the sash does not touch the ground.

Swing-out

This design is optimal for garage conditions. They are not suitable for installation in the yard, since the gate limits the height of the drive-in. The canvas should function freely by raising and sliding the sash to the ceiling of the room.

Swinging

Such structures with a door are often installed in the private sector on a fence. The swing gates are based on pillars, two of which are located at the width of the canvas, and the third pillar is located next to the wicket, if it is located next to the structure.

Roll

These designs have appeared on the market recently. The gates are made of steel strips, which are combined into a flexible leaf. When it is necessary to open the gate, it begins to roll up and wind up on the shaft. This solution allows you to drive up close to the premises.

Foldable

Folding gates are known to many under the name "accordion". The opening of the canvas can be carried out upwards and sideways. Between metal mesh seals are located. Wide use received constructions which are opened upwards.

Manufacturing features

Each type of gate has its own design features. Before starting the manufacturing process, you should study the patterns of the structure of the canvas and work out an action plan. Swing gates are not an exception to this issue. Even a beginner who has not previously worked with metal products can make a swing-type gate from corrugated board with his own hands.

To make products, you will need skills in working with a drill, welding, screwdriver, construction tape and grinder. The design of the products is created in such a way that the use of free space must be accompanied by maximum functionality. Roller blocks are responsible for the reliability of the gate, which are located in the lower part of the profile beam and move by opening or closing the leaves.

There are several features of this type of gate that distinguish it from other designs:

  • when assembling the canvas, push-button corner connectors are used, thanks to which it is possible to exclude sagging of the sashes during use;
  • the fasteners of the material are hidden, thereby preserving the decorative properties of the gate. Also, this solution does not allow foreign objects to enter the space between the profile;
  • the sashes are fastened using three-section hinges. Details allow to extend the life of the structure.

Studying the drawings of a standard sheet made from a profiled sheet, you will be able to notice that a frame made of a square metal profile is used as the basis of the structure. Alternatively, a thick-walled pipe with a diameter of 30 mm is used.

A metal vein is used to reinforce the sash. It should be horizontal. This reinforcement allows the web geometry to be retained.

You can fix the sashes using electric welding or metal screws. Since the profiled sheet is light, two strong loops with a diameter of 20 mm will be enough for it. Metal pipes with a diameter of 60-100 mm can act as a bearing support.

The fastening of the gate leaves is carried out on the basis of the fence, which is present on the site. If you are planning to install a brick fence, consider installing the mortise joints between the bricks in advance. Hinged supports will be welded to them.

The optimal width of the entrance gate in a private area is 3 m. These dimensions are enough for a truck or car to enter the yard. The height of the gate should not exceed 2 meters.

In the role of a locking mechanism, pins in the shape of the letter "L" can be used. They should be located at the bottom of the flaps. Special clamps are dug into the ground, which are metal tubes, the diameter of which exceeds the thickness of the locking mechanism.

So that the new gates blend harmoniously into the overall interior of the site, you can use corrugated board to finish the frame part... Typically, the material is attached to the web framework.

Maintain a distance from the ground, which should be 50-70 mm.

Material selection

The type of material from which the gate will be made is influenced by the dimensions of the structure, its weight and other factors. Sash frames are usually made from shaped pipe with a section of 60x40 mm. Choose a metal that is 1.5-2 mm thick.

The size of the section also depends on the mass of the gate, but experts recommend making a choice based on the following indicators:

  • if the total weight of the gate leaves does not exceed 150 kg, you can use a pipe with a cross section of 80x80 mm. The thickness of the metal should be 4 mm;
  • with a metal gate weight of 150-300 kg, it is necessary to use a pipe with a section of 100x100 mm and a thickness of 5 mm;
  • if the weight of the structure exceeds 300 kg, it will suit you iron pipes, the cross-section of which is 140x140 mm with a material thickness of 5 mm.

You can use brick, wood, or concrete to create the racks. When choosing a material, one should study the properties and its resistance in relation to the expected loads.

Hinges can have adjustable or non-adjustable mechanisms. Make sure that the material of manufacture is of high quality, since the hinges must withstand the weight of the canvas.

The lock can be mechanical or electromechanical. The choice should be made based on your preferences. You will also need paint for painting the racks and metal profile sheathing.

Sheathing can be made from any material. Many people make profile sheathing, some country house owners choose combined options made of wood and metal or PVC. For this purpose, any option that you like is suitable.

If you are planning on creating an automatic gate, make the frame more durable. Automation can be installed immediately or later.

Dimensions (edit)

The best option is to build a gate at the same time as a hedge. However, many people are faced with a situation where they need to expand the passage or replace an old product. In this case, you will need to make an accurate calculation of the future gate.

Taking measurements and calculating the required amount of material, take into account the coverage of the driveways... If your territory is equipped with an asphalt, concrete or tiled surface, you can leave a clearance of 5 cm. If there is grass on the road, increase the clearance to 10 cm for comfortable opening of the gate.

Do not forget to leave a gap between the leaves so that in the future it will be possible to level the displacement of the supports.

Tools and accessories

The gate can have a variety of structures. Many people equip canvases with built-in wickets for convenience. Before creating a gate, you will need to think carefully about how the finished canvas will look, draw a diagram or a sketch of the structure. This decision will help you decide on the tools and materials that will be required to create the canvas.

The standard list of components for creating a gate consists of the following items:

  • sash sheathing, support pipes;
  • reinforcement for creating stiffeners;
  • a pipe made of a profile or a square made of metal for the frame of the structure;
  • soil, material for painting;
  • bolt, latches or shutter mechanisms;
  • leaf hinges, guide and door closers if required.

You will also need the following tools:

  • nylon construction cord;
  • welding machine;
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver or drill;
  • electric grinder;
  • special scissors for metal.

When planning a new gate, you will need to pay special attention to the dimensions of the structure, the presence of the wicket. Due to the large flaps, the mass of the entire structure increases, so the frame should be made of reinforced material.

How to do it yourself?

The gate is manufactured in stages. The process is divided into two steps:

  • installation of racks for hanging the canvas;
  • creation of swing gates.

You can change the stages, but the posts for the gate structure must be at least seven days old, after which you can hang the frame on them. In order not to waste time, you can start welding.

Installation of supports

Supports can be made from:

  • profile pipe;
  • concrete pillars. You can buy a finished product or fill it yourself;
  • brick or natural stone.
  • wooden bar.

Installation of supports can be carried out using the following methods:

  • hammering... Driving depth should be about 1.5 meters. This method is considered the fastest and most economical. When choosing this method, you should carefully monitor the level so that the gate does not warp;
  • reinforced concreting... You will need to reinforce the pillar with concrete.

Step-by-step instruction for the installation of supports:

  • if you decide to do concreting, you will need to drill a pit with a minimum depth of 1 meter. It is necessary to do drilling with a drill, the diameter of which is more than 200 mm.
  • the depth of the pit will depend on the degree of soil freezing in your area. The width of the sides can be determined by the quality of the soil and the dimensions of the support itself.
  • create a concrete cushion with a height of 150-200 mm. It should consist of sand and gravel. The pillow is used to exclude the deepening of the struts;
  • then you need to mount the post and align it with building level... After aligning the support, you can start pouring;
  • the concreted structure must stand for a week. This is the minimum time required for concrete to harden. Do not forget to periodically wet the concrete with water to prevent cracks;
  • in order to increase the reliability of the supports, it will be necessary to make reinforcement and bring out a pair of reinforcing embeds under the hinges.

Creation of sashes

Before starting the construction of a structure, you should determine the location and appearance gate. The place where products are installed can affect the appearance of all elements.

If you plan to install a gate in the backyard, when entering a garden area, or create a fence for a future construction site, you will need to choose simple materials. For the front gate, you should choose more expensive and presentable products..

A universal guide for making a gate with your own hands:

  • prepare a drawing of the future design. Using the diagram, you can make an accurate calculation of the required materials;
  • the frame for the gate must match the dimensions finishing... Observing this condition, you will be able to simplify the whole process of work and will not run into connecting seams on the front of the canvas;
  • when making calculations, you should use the indicators of the working width of the finishing materials;
  • to create components for the frame, you will need to cut the pipe to the desired length and grind it;
  • grinding is required to remove rust from products. If there is oil on the metal, it can be removed with solvents.

Welding

When interacting with welding, do not forget about safety precautions. If you don't have enough experience, contact a specialist. With this method, you can improve the quality of work and get an attractive design.

Joints should be carried out in such a way that water does not flow into the pipe.... If the joints are not welded correctly, snow or water will enter the pipe, which will begin to increase in volume in warm weather. This will lead to the expansion of the walls of the product and deformation of the entire structure.

If you are welding the outer and inner frame, a checkerboard pattern will be required. In this way, rupture of the weld seams during thermal expansion can be avoided.

Stiffening ribs affect the resistance to wind loads. If you sew a fence with a finishing material, weld the pipe in the middle of the outer seam. In this way, you indicate the place of attachment of the cladding material.

Welding with loops should be done to the posts and to the frame... If you used bricks for the manufacture of pillars, and the reinforcement was not removed, you will need to fix the channel on the brick, and then start welding the loops.

Primer

Regardless of what material you use to create the framework, it will require priming. The primer extends the life of the paint and makes the application process more comfortable. Welding points should be primed more thoroughly.

Frame staining

All dust must be removed from the frame before painting. Any type of paint can be used to paint a part. Most people use a spray gun as it guarantees a smoother layer application. Using a brush delays the process, but reduces paint consumption.

With this step by step guide you can make your own gate and simplify the process as much as possible.

Beautiful examples and options

A beautifully designed gate will draw attention to the site and show the good taste of its owner. Openwork canvases are popular. Decorative doors look expensive and sophisticated. The inner side of the structure can be sheathed with polycarbonate sheets. Outwardly, such a gate looks like a real work of art.

Products can be installed in the country or in a suburban area. With patterned elements, you can show the individuality of your territory.

Stained glass inserts at the entrance gates make the entire territory spectacular and unusual. The designs demonstrate their brightness and originality, attracting the attention of others. You can choose any design depending on your imagination. The stylistics of the idea should be combined with the rest of the construction components.

If you want to give the site a more austere look, pay attention to the blind metal gates with forging elements. They will harmoniously combine metal with decorative ornaments. The chosen design will show the good taste of its owner and hide the territory from prying eyes.

On the site that borders the landings, you can install a gate from natural materials... You can use a stone for support. Such canvases look beautiful against the background of nature. Natural ingredients will last a long time if you treat the surface with protective products.

The strength of the gate is guaranteed by stone supports. This design is convenient, since when replacing the main leaf, it will not be necessary to dismantle all the doors as a whole.

Compact white doors are always eye-catching. White color scheme gives products lightness and weightlessness. Although the gates have a catchy color, they will organically combine with the general style of the territory.

The design will attract the gaze of passers-by, since there is an opinion that only wealthy people can afford such a gate.

Roll-back products with an original design will look good in the country. They are able to save space on the site and will delight you with their modern style.

Many people equip gates wooden gates, which can be used not only as an entrance to the territory, but also for zoning the space.

Approaching country house first of all, the guests see the gate and the wicket. That is why it is quite important to choose not only high-quality and functional designs, but also attractive in appearance. Before purchasing a gate for a house in a store, you need to take into account what exactly these products are, and what you should pay attention to during the purchase.

There is a series of gates for a private house

Fencing features

Following the purchase of a piece of land outside the city, the first thing to do is to fence it off from prying eyes. As a rule, for such a purpose, either brick, or lattice, or structures from a profile sheet are used. This is necessary in order to avoid the penetration of thieves into their territory, as well as to hide the site from neighbors. Depending on the type of fence, a wicket and a gate are also selected.

Difficulties may arise during the acquisition of gates, since they must be bought, taking as a basis the type of local relief, the size of the building itself, as well as the total area of the territory. It is also worth taking into account the main purpose of the gate, the location of the street and the width of the carriageway. If the gate is in an inconvenient place, then over time they will need to be dismantled, and this will require additional funds. For this reason, it is best to have some kind of plan in mind beforehand.

In this video, you will learn more about fences for a private house:

Basically, gates for country houses are made from a frame sash, their filler, movement fittings and bearing pillars of the support.

main destination

For private houses or summer cottages, wickets built into the gates are universal. With the help of such a design, it is possible not only to enter and exit, exit and enter the courtyard, but also, together with solid fences, protect the site from natural disasters. This is especially important in winter period time when strong cold winds adversely affect the planted vegetation on the site.

If in ordinary panel buildings the entrance is considered to be doors that protect against unauthorized entry and indicate the material wealth of the owner, then in a private house this role is played directly by the gate.

Nowadays, you can also find here and there wooden gates, which were made about 100 years ago and have survived to this day. However, such products should be well looked after, otherwise the swing system or support will become unusable. Modern fashion suggests that such designs have long been outdated., and to replace them it is best to choose improved technological gates, but at the same time it is necessary to pay attention to the fact that they should serve faithfully for several decades.

If you spend it once, then you can inherit a fenced summer cottage, equipped for a comfortable life, not only to your children, but even to your great-grandchildren.

Materials used

As a rule, gates consist of a well-welded frame, which is made of steel or shaped pipes. As for the profile material, only a stainless type is suitable for these purposes, otherwise the structure will need to be painted regularly. For the manufacture of gates, profile pipes are used. ... Other materials and production technologies:

  1. In the last century, in Soviet enterprises, the owners of country houses ordered welded sheets, which are whole works of art. Such material was used only for fencing the territory from the carriageway. It was especially in demand in the nineties.
  2. However, over time, when fashion and material condition of people change, rectangular unattractive welded gates replace cast-iron structures. Moreover, such products can also be called an incredible work of art. Such collars were cast by qualified specialists, and various ornaments and patterns were made in absolutely any shape and size. This technology is still relevant at the present time, however, such structures will cost a lot of money.
  3. Profiled sheet products have become an alternative for many homeowners. Such designs are able to fit perfectly into the main fence. And if there is a desire, then they can be installed in such a way that the place for entry and exit will be invisible from afar.
  4. If a private house and its territory is decorated with beautiful stone structures, the owners prefer to enclose the site with wrought iron or lattice gates. To create a thermal effect, they must be sheathed with polycarbonate sheets, and you can also install a seal. In addition, polycarbonate can be used not transparent, but matte. In modern hardware stores there is a large assortment of this material in absolutely any color, from the most popular to exotic shades.
  5. The gates made of euro shtaketnik look quite unusual. In its production, a special technique is used: initially, metal sheets are cut according to a special scheme, and after that the resulting scraps are attached symmetrically to the guides.

Varieties of gates

Experienced professionals and owners beautiful gate for a private house, it is advised not to give up the gate. If you save a little money on its installation, then you can create some discomfort for yourself, the main inconvenience of which will be the constant closing and opening of the gate. Indeed, in order to launch or release someone to your site, you will need to open the gate. If the structure has a separate entrance, then any problems should not appear.

Basically, a wicket door is a small single-leaf door that opens towards the carriageway. Depending on the desire, the door can be selected with a lattice or deaf. If we talk about aesthetic rules, then the wicket should ideally be combined with modern doors for the house. Additionally, it can be equipped with a video intercom, a call. If the suburban area is small, then you can simply hang a mallet in the form of a door knocker on the door. Speaking about the types of gates, they are:

  1. Swing.
  2. Rollback.
  3. Folding.
  4. Lift-and-turn.

Swing gates have their own nuances

Swing types

The former include console and hanging types... Basically, the owners of country houses make a choice in favor of swing varieties. If the main goal is to save money, then the most suitable option for a wicket may be its location right in the structure itself. This must be done so that the installation is not so difficult. As a rule, for such a product, the use of two supports is enough. For the classic version, where the wicket is placed separately from the gate, you will need another additional support post.

Loops are attached to the vertical posts. For this, you can use two types of elements:

  1. Metallic.
  2. Polymeric.

Sashes are hung on these loops. At this stage of the installation work, the owner must decide in which direction the gates will open and close. If the carriageway is small, then it is best to install doors that open into the territory. As a rule, this method does not cause any inconvenience to vehicles passing on the road and people passing by.

It must also be taken into account that the sashes should not adversely affect the hinges and frames, therefore, when hanging, it is best to use light types of material. Heavy ones under their own weight can sag, tear off the supports, and sometimes even cause deformation of the entire structure. To lock the swinging gate, you will need to install a strong bolt, which will help to ensure that the leaves will not sag during operation. A spring retainer will provide correct location canvases in open form, in closed - this role is played by the delimiter.

Installation of swing gates is easy and simple. There are several methods, each of which will suit absolutely any owner. suburban area, regardless of his financial situation.

To increase the operating time, experts recommend organizing a good foundation. If someone decided to save money on this, then in the future, repairs may be required, which will cost much more. Another disadvantage of swing gates is the need to regularly cleanse the space from dry leaves, snow, so that you can freely open and close the gate.

Electric swing-open and retractable

These types of gates are able to open and close thanks to two drives. Most often, the opening is carried out towards the inner territory, so the space must always be free, otherwise it is possible to damage not only the structure itself, but also movable property. At the same time, there should be no drops and rises on the gate.

This gate has 2 drives

Sliding gates are often called sliding or sliding gates. They are a canvas, parallel guides that are below and above, as well as a roller base, which is made of metal or caprolon.

The structure moves horizontally, therefore, in no case should drops be allowed. To securely place the video, you will need to organize a foundation where all the filling will be installed. In order to automate the gate, it is necessary to additionally install a block.

Folding structure

The mechanism of folding gates is the use of several parts of the telescopic sash, which are closed and opened in a specific order. Expensive varieties of such structures can be installed only if they enclose a small area in which it will simply be impossible to use other options.

Cheap folding gates outwardly are somewhat similar to an accordion, where aluminum canvases are connected by means of hinges, between which there is rubber, which provides protective functions against strong gusts of wind. These canvases move along special guides. Free space for the normal functioning of this type of gate, less is needed when compared with the swing type.

Additionally, such structures can be equipped with small windows. It is also worth paying attention to the fact that the gates may differ in decor and size.

Lift-and-turn options

As for the overhead gate types, such structures are rarely installed on the territory of private houses, since the cost for them is high. In addition, many difficulties arise during installation, so it would be more expedient to call a qualified specialist for installation. And this, in turn, will also require additional investment.

Before equipping your entrance to the site, you must prepare in advance a plan for the location of the gate and gate. It is also worth taking into account the fact that built-in wickets should have a threshold through which it will be necessary to constantly step over, and this is inconvenient.

There is no need to save your money on the purchase of additional sensors if you plan to use automatic system closing and opening gates. For example, if there is no option to recognize foreign objects, then the mechanism will not be able to stop, which means that the car can be damaged during the drive.

The most popular and time-tested type of gate is swing. They fit perfectly into any area - a summer cottage, cottages, huge private territories, etc. Their prevalence is ensured simple installation and reliability.

Advantages and disadvantages

Most consumers choose the swing gate type for a reason. There are several main advantages of such products. First of all, they have simple construction, which means that the service life will be long.

Also, the gate is universal - they can be installed on industrial enterprise, and in an office building, a private plot and other premises.

Separately, it should be said about the varying width of the sash - large gates will easily cover a huge opening. And finally, beautiful swing gates will decorate your site and make it more attractive.

The most noticeable inconvenience of using the products is the large amount of space in the opening points. Also, this place will have to be cleaned from dirt and during a snowfall.

Varieties

For many years, the principle of operation of swing gates has not changed. The only thing is that other materials are used, such as corrugated board and polycarbonate. The mechanism and drive for swing gates is also being improved - at the moment, this is a whole automated complex, which greatly facilitates use.

Depending on the design of this system, the product can be bisexual or combined, with an additional wicket. The latter type can be found in the garage, in the warehouse.

The design also divides swing gates into two types - one-sided and two-sided. The former are decorated only from the side of the street, and the latter, most often, are made by artistic forging.

How to choose a material?

To choose what the gate will be made of, you need to define their task, architectural direction and design. It should be said right away that wooden and metal products are created in the same way - the only difference is in further characteristics. Several recommendations on how to choose the right trim.

For example, for automation, it is better to select a light material, such as polycarbonate - then they will open and close well. For wood, choose oak - this is the most durable species.

A combination of metal and wood composite will also look good. Wooden gates with wrought-iron inserts will look very unusual. Photos of swing gates will be shown different ways execution.

How to install by yourself?

How to make and install a swing gate with your own hands is a popular question for those who have acquired summer cottage... In general, this is a simple matter, but it should be taken seriously. First of all, prepare a drawing. All dimensions and main elements must be defined there.

Consider all factors for the correct sash selection. As their reinforcement, several diagonal and cross bars can be installed.

Gate installation begins with the installation of support pillars. They should be chosen in advance - pipes can play their role, wooden beams, brick pillars.

The metal product must be cleaned of corrosion, painted, and installed in the ground, to a depth of 80 centimeters. We strengthen it with reinforcement, level it and fill it with a solution of cement, sand and crushed stone.

Next, you need to make a frame. We advise you to use metal carcass with polycarbonate or corrugated board. Using the dimensions in the drawings, it is necessary to weld, check the seams, and then sheathe with the selected material. In general, it can be installed and used.

For improvement, select automation for your swing gates. There are two types of them - with a linear and a lever drive.

The first type shortens and lengthens the stem, and the second is made of a lever and a movable joint. The linear drive is most widely used due to its simple design, reliability and low price.

Linkages are less resistant to strong winds and may open due to their impact.

When erecting fences around your land plot or when building a garage, the question of how to make a gate with your own hands will certainly arise. Before purchasing materials and getting to work, you need to decide which of the existing types of gates is best suited for installation in a particular case. Not miscalculation in in all the nuances in advance, and choosing not the most better design, you can doom yourself to the completely unnecessary laborious process of clearing the territory for their installation.

That is why you need to start by studying the information and the features of their design.

Today there are three main types of gates - sliding, swing and overhead. All of them are seriously different from each other constructively, so it is worth considering each type separately.

Swing gates

The simplest scheme in execution - swing gates

Swing gates with a wicket built into them or installed side by side is a traditional scheme that is most often used in private houses. It is based on pillars, two of which are set to the width of the gate, and the third, if necessary, determines the width of the wicket, if it is arranged next to the gate.

Gate leaves and wickets in this design are mounted on hinges welded to the supporting posts. They can be fixed to the outside of the supports or to the inside. It will depend on this and on the hinge system in which direction the gate leaves will open - inward or outward.

Swing gate leaves are most often metal frames welded from a corner or profile pipe, which can then be sheathed different materials- thin metal sheets, corrugated board or wood.

Swing gates can be made entirely of wood. In this case, boards are fixed on a reinforced frame made of timber, located on the inner side of the doors.

In the manufacture of sashes, it is important to remember that they should not be too heavy so as not to put a lot of stress on the support posts and hinges. The units and parts of the suspension themselves, in terms of size and strength, must correspond to the weight of the sashes.

A closing device is installed on the door leaf - it can be a bolt or hinges for a lock, and sometimes a powerful latch. When the gate is closed, the sashes in the lower part, in the middle of the entrance width, rest against the installed stop, and when they are wide open, they can be fixed with spring clips.

The disadvantages of this design include the possible inclination of the support pillars and sagging of the flaps, but this can only happen if the installation technology is violated or the weight from the curd is incorrectly calculated. Therefore, it is necessary to properly deepen the foundation of the supports, do not use too heavy material for the canvases and install the loops corresponding to them in size.

The advantage of swing gates is the relative compactness of their placement. The design does not require clearing additional space along the fence, as it will be necessary to do for other species.

Installation of swing gates

If swing gates are of moderate weight, for example, if they are made of corrugated board, then they are well suited metal poles from pipes with a diameter of 80 ÷ 100 mm or a profiled pipe with the same size of the sides of its square section. Such supports will quite cope with their task. However, more massive pillars are also suitable, if it will be easier to find them.

The pillars-support for the gate are installed in two ways - by hammering and concreting.

  • Pillars are usually driven to a depth of 1.2–1.3 m. This method has many advantages, the main of which is sufficient reliability and speed of work.

Installation is performed as follows:

- a hole of the required diameter is drilled, approximately half the planned depth of the pillars.

- now the pillars must be fixed to or to stationary buildings located in the yard;

- after that, loops are welded to the posts, in places previously marked by level;

- the assembled sashes are suspended on the welded hinges, the correctness of their convergence in the center is checked.

  • Concreting the pillars for the installation of the gate gives increased rigidity and stability of the structure. Such supports are required for wide or heavy sashes.

This installation method is carried out without reinforcement or with the use of a reinforcing cup. The work is carried out in stages:

- first a hole is drilled with a diameter of not less than 200-250 mm and a depth of 1.5-1.9 m. The exact size of the hole will depend on the cross-section of the post.

- layers of sand and gravel are poured onto the bottom of the pit and carefully compacted. Each of the layers should be about 100 mm;

- then a pillar is installed into the pit, on the sand and gravel cushion;

- concrete is poured around it, and while the mortar has not frozen, the pillar is set in level strictly vertically, fixing in this position with the help of supports.

  • If a reinforcing structure is used to secure the post, then the installation is carried out in the same way as without reinforcement, until the cushion is tamped for the installation of the post.

On the pillow, in the drilled hole, the so-called reinforcing cup is first placed, and a post is inserted into it. Then, concrete is poured into the pit. In this case, the supports for the post may not even be needed, since it will be held by the reinforcing structure.

After the concrete has completely hardened and the proper strength has been set, massive loops are marked and welded on the pillars. We must not forget about leaving gaps that will allow the shutters to open and close freely, even with a possible slight tilt of the posts due to the movement of the ground during melting snow or long rains.

To avoid such deformations of the structure, you can additionally fasten the pillars together with a beam welded to the lower parts of the pillars (it can be sunk into the ground). The frame will be even more rigid if equip it with an upper crosspiece, but in this case it will restrict travel for trucks or minibuses.

Sliding gates

Sliding gates are subdivided into several subspecies, and from them you can choose the one suitable for certain conditions. But almost each of them will require free space along. Therefore, you may have to work extra to make room for free movement of the movable sash when it is opened.

Sliding gates are cantilever, suspended and sliding, which run on a rail or other metal profile (channel, I-beam, etc.).

Video: types of sliding gates

1. Suspended option not very popular for installation in the private sector, since the height of the entrance is limited by a profile installed from above, on which the door leaf is suspended and moved along it.

2. Sliding gates that run on a rail installed in the opening and along the wall are also not a very popular option, especially in snowy and cold regions. The gate will move freely along the rail if it is cleared of ice and various debris, but in winter, in case of snow drifts or icing, the sash will not be able to open and close without preliminary clearing. This version of the gate, rather, is good for the southern regions, where the snow does not lie for a long time and there is no severe frost.

This is the only but very important design flaw. Otherwise, it is very convenient in that it does not require a vast territory for opening and closing.

On the rack, on the side into which the sash will open, rollers and brackets holding the canvas are installed in the upper part.

The bottom of the mobile gate leaf is also equipped with rollers, along which it moves along a rail or profile mounted on the ground.

3. Cantilever - the most convenient option of all types of sliding gates, especially since they have several different designs from which you can choose the optimal one.

Such gates are rigidly fixed on a beam, which, moving in the cantilever unit, moves the leaf of the sash along with it.

Cantilever gates are more complex in design, but they work best in snowy winters, since their sash never touches the ground. Another positive quality of this species is that it does not have a height limiter, i.e. both a car and a truck can enter the site. In the construction of cantilever gates, powerful pillars are installed not on two sides, but only on one side - it is in this direction that the sash will move when the passage is opened.

The cantilever beam can be positioned in three different positions - top, middle and bottom.

  • The most widespread an option is the location of the movable beam in the middle of the door leaf. Due to its location, it enhances the rigidity of the structure. The cantilever mechanism with guide rollers is located at a sufficient height so that it is not covered with snow, which means that the gate will be in working order at any time of the year.
  • Cantilever gates with a movable beam installed in the lower part of the door leaf are more vulnerable in winter and will require constant maintenance in the form of cleaning from snow drifts and icing. Otherwise, this is also a convenient option, since the blade does not come into contact with the ground surface, and there is no need to install a guide rail for it.
  • In the third case, the beam runs along the upper part of the canvas and will always be safe from snow blockages, water, and debris. But this version of the cantilever door requires a particularly rigid reinforcement of the frame and leaf, otherwise it may deform in the lower part.

Cantilever gates are quite accessible for making on their own, but only if the owner has certain skills in such work. understands assembly drawings, has a basic knowledge of physics and mechanics. With every effort, you can make a gate that will be indistinguishable from factory products.

Any cantilever door can be opened if equipped with an electric drive and electronic system remote control. This will allow the owner, without leaving the car, to open the passage using the key fob.

Installation of sliding cantilever doors

Installing sliding or sliding gates is a much more complicated undertaking than installing a swing option.

When installing this type of gate, on the sides of the passage, as a rule, brick pillars are installed on which rollers supporting brackets and catchers will be mounted.

The main load always falls on the channel, which is installed on on the a reliably arranged foundation on the side of the gate where the sash will be attached (with the lower position of the console) or on metal supports, if the console is located in the center of the gate or at the top.

  • The foundation for the installation of the channel can be solid or consist of 2 - 3 pillars. The second option is more economical. A foundation pit is being dug - it can consist of one hole or two or three for the columnar type. The depth should be from 1.2 to 1.5 m, the width should be 40 ÷ 50 cm, and the length should be at least 1.5 m.
  • Further, in the pit, two pillows of sand and gravel are arranged, 10 cm thick each.
  • Then, a formwork is installed in the pit and a waterproofing material is laid in it - roofing material or a dense plastic film.
  • A reinforcing structure is fixed in the formwork, and then ready-made concrete mortar with a strength grade of at least M-300 is poured
  • A channel with reinforcement welded to its shelves is installed on top of the poured surface. The channel is pressed into the concrete with the shelves downward until they are completely immersed. After the final hardening of the concrete, a reliable metal platform should be obtained. The gate can be installed no earlier than a month after the foundation is poured.
  • The supporting frame is being made. It will need a metal corner or square tube having a cross section of 60 × 40 mm.
  • Additional cross members are welded to the frame of the frame, giving the required rigidity to the structure. At the location of the console (in this case, from the bottom), a cantilever guide beam must be welded to the frame, with the help of which the gate will move along the rollers.
  • The welded seams of the structure must be thoroughly cleaned of slag. The entire supporting frame must be primed and coated with metal paint, which will keep it from corrosion.
  • It is fixed, sheet metal or boards, depending on the chosen design of the door leaf.
  • When the structure is ready, and the foundation with the installed cantilever channel fully gains strength, you can proceed to the installation of the nodes and parts necessary for moving the gate.
  • Console blocks equipped with rollers are installed on the finished foundation with a channel.
  • Then the gates are rolled up on them, adjusted strictly according to the level, and after that the blocks are welded to the channel.
  • Then, the top and end rollers are installed and fixed.
  • The upper and lower catchers are fixed to the opposite support pillar. They need to be accurately calculated according to the position of the knurled rollers installed on the door leaf.
  • Further, if planned, an electric drive is installed, but the gate may well be opened manually.

Video instruction for installing cantilever sliding gates

As mentioned above, the cantilever beam can be installed not only from below, but also in the middle or at the top of the door leaf.

In the manufacture and assembly of this type of gate, it is especially important to accurately calculate all parameters and carefully observe the dimensions, since any error can cause deformation of the structure.

Up-and-over gates

This type of door is well suited for equipping a garage. They are not suitable for driving into the courtyard, since they will limit the height. Such gates should be easy to close and open by lifting and moving the door leaf horizontally upward, under the garage door leaf.

Up-and-over doors - perfect solution for garage

During opening or closing, the lower part of the sash protrudes slightly forward, outside the garage, so having established a similar type of gate, you need to calculate how close you can fit the car so that it does not interfere with the opening process.

The canvas is made from a metal frame, which is sheathed, most often, with metal sheets, wood or composite impact-resistant materials. The positive qualities of this type of gate can be called reliability and compactness in the open position, in contrast to options with two swing leaves.

To make this structure yourself, it is imperative to have drawings with all the necessary parameters.

  • To mount the gate, you will need to make not only a frame for the door covering the passage, but also another one on which the gate will be mounted. Sometimes it is used to frame the entrance to the garage, but more often additional guides are added, along which the rollers installed on the canvas will roll when the gate is opened. They also function as a device that holds the web from above in an open position.
  • In this case, inside the garage, the frame will be L-shaped on both sides of the driveway. Its dimensions should provide the necessary space for the passage of the door leaf between the ceiling and additional guides.
  • On the canvas on both sides, top and bottom, rollers are installed that will walk along the guides when the gate moves.
  • On both sides, two levers are mounted to the frame installed in the opening, which will lift the canvas when opened. Shock absorbers are necessarily provided - they will soften the shock when closing. The levers are connected to springs that are adjusted to the required force - they should not be overtightened or loose, but at the same time the sash should tightly close the entrance opening.
  • The supporting stationary frame must be securely anchored to the opening, as it will be subjected to significant stress at all times.
  • Further, when the entire structure is mounted, you can equip the gate with fittings and fix additional elements.

If you plan to install an electric drive, then this process is carried out last, and it is better to entrust this work to specialists. The electric opening system is quite an expensive pleasure, so it is better not to take risks if you do not have the skill in the installation and debugging of such equipment.

Having carefully studied the instructions and drawings, preparing necessary materials, as well as having sufficiently high working skills, any structure from the presented ones can be assembled independently. But it is better if the work is done together with a knowledgeable master - then it will go much faster and better.
