Making a bunk bed from wood with your own hands. Do-it-yourself bunk bed: assembly steps for different design options

If the family has two children, but not so many square meters, then excellent option for the organization of sleeping places for the children there will be a bunk bed. Such a bed makes it possible to use economically inner space rooms. For children, this type of furniture (IMAGE 1) will only bring joy. In most cases, bunk beds are delivered unassembled to your home.

To avoid additional costs, you can try to do it yourself. This article provides instructions for assembling the structure. The bed kit includes the necessary parts to assemble the bed. If you have basic furniture assembly skills, then detailed assembly instructions will help you save money on your own.

An essential condition is that children's furniture must be absolutely safe.

For this reason, the assembly process must be taken seriously. The bed must be firm and carefully assembled. You need to start the assembly process by marking the places on the main support walls of the crib, where wooden bases or boxes that are intended for mattresses will be fixed.

The instructions for assembling the bed provide for the presence of such materials and tools:

  • boards;
  • timber;
  • plywood;
  • screws;

Assembling the bed

It is imperative that mattresses are measured, to the size of which plywood substrates are cut. A 2 cm margin should be provided so that it is convenient to cover the mattresses with sheets. After marking, you can proceed directly to the implementation of installation work.

First, 2 side frames are made. For this, a bar with a cross section of 5 * 10 cm is used, which is fastened with screws. A board (15 * 2 cm) is screwed onto one of the frames. Moreover, the joints must be both strong and neat. Self-tapping screws should not pierce through wooden elements, protruding with pointed ends outward.

The second frame is similarly equipped with a side. It is made from a board having a cross section of 20 * 2 cm. For the legs of a bunk bed, a 5 * 10 cm bar is used. Their length should correspond to the size of the second tier of the structure.

Holes for screws are made in the vertical beams located on the legs. Screwing in screws is carried out:

  • at the location of both tiers of the structure;
  • in side frames.

The drill creates small indentations in the legs. Washers and heads of 6 faces should sit in them. Screws are screwed into all holes. The recesses with their heads are sealed with putty.

The bed assembly instructions provide correct location structures in relation to the wall. If the wall is ordinary, then it is better to use laser level... With plasterboard walls, holes are drilled into vertical profiles.

Cross slats must be installed under the mattresses. This ensures the creation of a reliable and comfortable mattress bottom. It is especially important to do this efficiently on the upper tier so that the mattress does not fall on the child lying below. We carry out this operation by attaching the transverse undermattress strips to the longitudinal bars. The screw fixing step is 25-30 cm.

Today, people often make furniture with their own hands. If the family has two children, then in order to save space in the children's room, you can make or purchase a children's bunk bed.

A bunk bed for children can be designed as a pirate ship. To do this, you can add elements such as a strong rope, slide and handlebar.

DIY bunk bed: manufacturing technology

If you plan to purchase a high-quality bunk bed for children, then you should know that it is quite expensive. Budget designs are not always of high quality. The two-story structure must be able to support both children and parents. The stability of the product is also important.

In some cases, bunk beds are also made, but builders do not recommend doing this.

Necessary materials

Bunk bed, decorated in the same style with other furniture elements, perfectly complements the interior.

To make your own crib for children, which will have two floors, you need the following tools:

  1. Pliers.
  2. A hammer.
  3. Screwdriver.
  4. Electric drill or screwdriver.
  5. Building level.
  6. Roulette.
  7. Square.
  8. Hacksaw.
  9. Clamps.
  10. Electric jigsaw.

In order for the bed to fit perfectly into the interior of the children's room, you will need to think in advance about where it is best placed. You will need to take into account the size of the sleeping places in order to be able to understand how much material will need to be purchased. For work, you will need the following materials:

  1. Wooden beams 2.5 m long - 4 pcs.
  2. Wooden beams 3 m long - 4 pcs.
  3. Three-meter boards - 4 pcs.
  4. 2 plywood sheets, chipboard or slats 12 mm thick.
  5. Screws 75 mm long.
  6. Screws with a diameter of 6 mm, which have a hex head - 8 pcs.
  7. Bolts with a diameter of 6 mm and a length of 75 mm - 10 pcs.
  8. Nuts and washers.
  9. Putty, which is intended for working with wood.
  10. Self-tapping screws.
  11. Bolts 150 mm long - 2 pcs.
  12. Polyurethane.
  13. Sanding paper.

Wood can be replaced with laminated chipboard. If, nevertheless, it is planned to use boards, then before performing all the work, they will need to be kept in the room for about 1 week, so that the temperature and humidity are approximately the same as in the room where the structure will be made. This will need to be done so that the material does not warp.

Do-it-yourself crib assembly must be done carefully, because the design will be an important component of the children's room.

Work order

A bunk bed, decorated in a classic style, is in good harmony with the interior.

The manufacturing process is as follows:

  1. First of all, you need to determine on supporting structure beds the location of the fixation points of wooden boxes, which are intended for mattresses.
  2. A hole must be made on both sides of the side rails for each of the screws.
  3. Next, the lower longitudinal bar is pressed against the first wall, after which it is fastened with a screw. Do the same with the second wall.
  4. In the same way, the upper longitudinal beams are installed, which are intended for mattresses. At this stage, the supporting structure of the child's bed will be made.
  5. It is necessary to fix the cross bars under the baby bed. This should be done with both the lower and the upper tier. They must be rigidly fixed with screws to the beams at a distance of 30 cm from each other.
  6. Next, the frame of the box is sheathed with boards in the side. For cladding, it is recommended to use screws with invisible heads.
  7. Further, side-shields are attached, capable of excluding the accidental fall of children who will be sleeping.
  8. The stairs to the upper tier are rigidly fixed with screws.

Nuances that need to be considered

Bunk bed layout with built-in table and shelves.

It is imperative to be sure what dimensions should have a place for sleeping and on which side it is best to install a vertical ladder. The size of a child's bed should be approximately 8 cm longer and 10 cm wider than the sleeping space. The ladder will increase the size of the bed by approximately 4.5 cm.

In order to determine the appropriate bed height, the height of the ceiling in the room must be taken into account. The distance between the lower and upper floors should also be taken into account. You will need to leave enough space so that the mother can sit next to the child if necessary.

Ladder and uprights require solid wood beams and planks. The panels at the ends are the same for the entire structure, this moment will simplify their preparation. The side panels are the same width as the end panels. If you connect them differently with each other, then you can make an original design.

If we proceed from the size of the mattresses that will need to be placed on the bed, then it is necessary to increase the size of the structure by 2 cm on each side. This is necessary in order to be able to easily make bed linen. The most important guideline in this work is the convenience of the crib, which is being manufactured.

The lower position of the first tier can be determined if we take as the basis for calculations the height, which is easily overcome by the child. In most cases, the height is 35 cm for a child under 3 years old. The frame for placing the mattress should be lower by its thickness. For the second tier, the upper position must be set so that an adult child who sleeps upstairs can sit down on the first floor at any time without touching the head of the upper floor.

How to make a strong frame?

Bunk bed drawing

A children's bunk bed should be reliable, while the aesthetic side is secondary. The bars must be firmly connected with screws. The result is 2 frames that are almost the same size. Aesthetically, they are able to complement each other well.

You will need to fasten the board with screws to one of the sides and the end, the importance of this fastener should be taken into account. Self-tapping screws are recommended to be screwed in from the inside, you will need to make sure that they do not go through the board. For self-tapping screws of short length, you can drill large holes... For this, it is recommended to use a depth stop on an electric drill.

The sidewall is also installed on another frame. It is recommended to hide the holes for fasteners with putty. After it dries, sand the filler with sanding paper. The leg length must match the height of the guardrail. Make sure that the leg can withstand the load that will be on it.

You will need to make a hole in the leg at the attachment point top tier... The same hole is made in the frame with the bead. In the leg, you will need to make grooves that will help you easily hide the hex head of the screw and washer. The hole must be made so deep that the screw, passing through the side and the leg, can be securely fixed in the bar.

A children's bunk bed has one advantage: under the first tier, you can place a small box in which you can store a bed or a small amount of necessary things. For example, a child can place their toys in such a box. The front panel of the drawer should not be as long as that of the crib. The height should correspond to the panel on the first floor, which can complement the design of the room for the children.

Bed technology

The lower tier of the bed can be equipped for a child's play by equipping the structure with additional elements.

The base of a bunk crib must be made of wood. High-quality preparation of this material requires some effort: you will need to align with a planer, sand with sandpaper, at the end you will need to varnish the product in order to be able to extend its service life.

If the walls are made of plasterboard, then determining the location of the racks is quite simple. It is very important to make holes in the required places. For this purpose, it is recommended to find an assistant who can support the frame in the lower part, pressing it firmly against the wall.

The pilot holes will need to be made by drilling the profile of the posts, plasterboard and frame bar. It is necessary to prepare places for screwing in screws that have hex heads. For such an operation, a long drill should be used. The screws will need to be screwed in so that they connect all the elements and are fixed in the racks. In the same way, you need to install the first tier, that is, a frame with a side.

Particular attention must be paid to the installation of the fence, because it can create some safety guarantees for the children. The fence can be made of sturdy planks, which are fixed on racks placed in an upright position. In this case, the screws are screwed in from the inside. It should be borne in mind that there should be a hole in the fence for the stairs that lead to the upper tier.

A vertical ladder is made quite simply, it will take up less space when compared to a ladder that is inclined. First of all, two beams are fixed that can guide the movement of children during the ascent or descent. The steps must be securely fixed with bolts that are 6 mm long. Long bolts are used to secure the top step and at the same time fix the ladder to the bed.

Bunk bed for children made of laminated chipboard

The upper tier can be fixed to the wall. The lower stock can be equipped with castors.

If laminated chipboard is used for the production of a bunk bed for children, then leveling, sanding and varnishing of the material will not be necessary. Instead, you just need to process and glue the edge around the edges of the chipboard. Thanks to the use of such a chipboard, you can make a beautiful bed with your own hands in a short period of time. You should know that laminated chipboard has good strength and wear resistance.

It is necessary to cut laminated chipboard on the street. This material has its own specifics, in connection with which it will be necessary to make some changes in the production technology of the structure. A bunk bed for children made of laminated chipboard will have a much greater weight compared to wooden structure, thanks to which the bed will be more stable.

Bunk beds can be placed side by side. This saves a lot of space in the room.

In case of using chipboard, the following tools should be purchased:

  1. Portable hand-held circular plate.
  2. The iron you need to stick on the safety edge.
  3. Screwdriver.
  4. Screwdriver bits and drills.
  5. Protective gloves or mittens.
  6. Ruler.
  7. A simple pencil.
  8. Roulette.

To be able to make a bunk bed with your own hands good quality, from materials it is necessary to use not only chipboard, but also an edge, glue, sanding paper. You will also need to purchase a tree that is used for the stairs leading to the second floor.

Stages of making a bed:

  1. Project creation.
  2. Bonding edge to chipboard.
  3. Cutting the material.
  4. Connecting all elements to each other using self-tapping screws.

The choice of furniture for a nursery sometimes requires even more attention than sets for the living room or the parents' bedroom. Unlike parents, children have only a children's room for self-expression and relaxation in an apartment or house. And it depends on the arrangement of the children's room how comfortable the child will be there. At the same time, the decoration of the room can also be modest, made with the use of extraordinary decorative elements. But a truly original and cozy nursery can only be made by the presence of original and high-quality furniture. ("Children's room with a fabulous pirate ship", "Bunk beds in the interior of children's rooms.", "Marine theme in the interior of a nursery for a boy." . ").

Children's furniture sets are very different, and this diversity has been written about more than once in the articles of this site. The text of this article will contain photos various designs bunk beds and the method of their manufacture. Bunk beds have long ceased to be exclusively a sleeping place. So, to make a bed, you need the following set of tools:

Measuring instruments (tape measure, level, metal square, pencil or marker);

Chisel, saws;

Grinding devices (grinders, sandpaper);

Screwdriver and drill;

A set of screwdrivers, pliers, hammer;

Stainless steel bolts, washers with plugs, similar nails, a set of drills;

Joiner's glue, paints and varnishes and painting tools. ("Painting tools, brushes, rollers", "Joiner's tools", "Drill and screwdriver", "Power grinding tools", "Jigsaws, reciprocating saws, planers, milling machines").

Focusing on the size of the bed (height - 1.48 m, length - 2.065 m, width - 0.9 m, height from the floor to the first crossbar - tier - 23 cm, height from the lower to the upper tier is 850 mm) from the materials must be prepared following:

For racks, you will need bars with a cross section of 50 mm * 50 mm and a length of 1.48 m in the amount of 4 pieces.

The side walls are made of boards with a size of 100 mm * 25 mm and, accordingly, also in the amount of 4 pieces and a length of 2065 mm.

For transverse screeds, boards of 100 mm * 25 mm are best suited - 8 pieces (outer planks), boards of 75 mm * 25 mm - 2 pieces (foot), and four beams 50 mm * 25 mm for inner planks (tiers). All of the above should correspond to the width of the bed, which means 0.9 m.

When manufacturing, you will also need support bars measuring 25 mm * 25 mm, 4 pieces each with a length of 1.85 m and 0.9 m.

To equip the upper tier of the bed, it is also necessary to prepare boards 50 mm * 25 mm and 100 mm * 25 mm in size, 2 pieces each and 0.75 m long.

To make the stairs to the second tier of the bed, you will need 50 mm * 25 mm beams, 2 pieces each 1.25 m and 1.05 m.

In addition to wood, two sheets of plywood of 1 cm and dimensions of 1915 mm * 0.9 m will also be required. The bases for placing the bed on each tier will be made of them.

Important! The prepared material should be allowed to lie down in the acclimatization room for some time, and before proceeding with the assembly of all parts, they must be carefully sanded.

Taking into account the fact that all elements are polished and of the required length, we proceed to the assembly of the structure and carry out the following steps:

On all details, marks of future fastenings are marked with a pencil or marker. You need to make such marks carefully, especially if in the future it is not planned to cover the bed with paint or dark varnish.

It is more convenient to start assembling from the sides of the bed. For this, holes are drilled in the elements of the sidewalls, and the joints are lubricated with wood glue. Now the elements are twisted with bolts. You can also use metal corners. This is especially helpful in cases where the bed structure is more complex. (Fig. 12)

In a similar way, the sidewalls are fastened to the transverse boards of the structure. Additionally, auxiliary holes are drilled, which are also smeared at the joints of the parts. For this, it is better to lay the bed on the floor and on its side.

Support bars must also be fixed to the struts of the structure. They are fastened in the already described way with a step of 15 - 20 cm. In the future, the base plywood will rest on these beams. ... (Fig. 13, 14, 15, 16)

Sometimes additional corners are used, which fit on the racks.

Starting to assemble the stairs, the prepared external and internal beams are taken. Holes with a diameter of 25 mm are drilled in the inner beams. Beautiful bunk bed with two tiers for the nursery. Storage space is provided against the wall, in drawers and under the stairs.

In most Russian families, small housing sizes do not allow each child to have a separate room. Everyone solves this issue in their own way: someone buys folding chair-beds for children, someone puts several single beds. But bunk beds are best suited for such conditions. They allow you to solve the problem of lack of space, add 2-4 beds for children or even adults, and organize a locker for storing bedding sets or unnecessary things. Any child is happy to sleep on the second tier.

Let's try to figure out how you can make a beautiful and high-quality bunk bed with your own hands.

First of all, they plan the size of the bunk bed, the location of the main elements and choose the material of manufacture.

The height of the first and second tier should be sufficient for the child to sit freely on the bed. It is better to adjust the length and width of the structure to the typical sizes of children's mattresses, for teenagers it is 160x70 cm.

Children's bunk bed

The bed consists of the following elements:

  • corner posts (4 pcs.) - the basis of the frame;
  • horizontal jumpers (their number depends on the design);
  • locker (opening box for linen, clothes and things under the first tier) or drawers;
  • stairs;
  • fall arrestor on the second tier;
  • additionally, you can build in a rack for storing books and other things or a desk.

There is also an option to make a loft bed: below, instead of the first tier, there will be free space where you can put a table, a second sofa or a wardrobe. This option is suitable for a small room with one child.

We offer you to see the popular options for bunk beds for children:

IN narrow rooms it is possible to mount the second tier directly to the walls without supports.

Choice of materials

Children's bunk bed made of laminated chipboard with drawers

The classic furniture material is chipboard. According to the finished drawings, you can order the sawing of any parts. Regular chipboard costs about 350 rubles. per square meter, and a more environmentally friendly Egger - about 500 rubles.

Additionally, when cutting, they order the edging of each part, for this you will need to pay 30-50 rubles. per running meter of the edge. On all visible sides of the parts, PVC edge 2 mm, and for hidden - 0.4 mm to save. The sides of the parts that fit together do not need to be trimmed.

You can also make bunk beds from solid wood, here everything will certainly be natural. You can even save money if you use old boards and beams, sand and paint them. By the way, narrow birch window sills are very well suited for horizontal lintels of the second tier, they will even withstand an adult.

The main fastener for connecting parts is a furniture screw confirm, or, as it is also called, "Euro screw". Ordinary self-tapping screws hold worse in chipboard, and it is almost impossible to screw them in to the end. Euro screws, on the other hand, can be easily tightened even without a screwdriver - with a hex wrench, but you need to drill holes for them in advance.

Furniture dowels are used for preliminary assembly of parts. To enhance the strength of the frame, you can key locations complement the confirmations with steel corners.

Assembling the bed

Bunk bed layout
  • We cut out the details, according to the drawn up drawing. We carefully grind all the saw cut from splinters.
  • Pre-assemble the frame for dowels.
  • When we are convinced that everything fits together, we drill holes for confirmations and tighten the parts almost to the end. For confirmations, a special drill is used, if it is not there, you will need three drills of different diameters (for thread, head and neck), and change them each time.
  • We glue plastic or rubber pads on the legs so as not to scratch the floor.
  • If a built-in bed was planned, for additional rigidity, it is attached to the wall and floor.
  • First, we collect two backs, and then we fasten them with horizontal parts. After that, we collect and install the limiter and the ladder to the second tier. For convenience, it is better to install the ladder not straight, but at an angle.
  • If a locker or drawers were supposed under the first tier, the cover of the lower tier is made of a solid sheet of plywood or chipboard. The locker cover is attached to the frame with hinges. Drawers assembled separately and installed on full extension ball guides.
  • For the second tier, the base under the mattress can be made from strips of plywood, as in a regular bed.
  • When all the elements are in place, we finally tighten the confirmations and close their caps with plastic plugs.
  • If necessary, the frame is covered with varnish, paint or stain.
