An indispensable attribute of any window system is a window sill. In addition to performing a decorative function, it additionally protects the room from the penetration of cold in the area of the support profile. The most widespread are plastic (PVC), wooden and partly granite window sills. But since plastic products cost less, have high performance characteristics, and their weight is lower, they are in great demand. Carrying out installation works does not require special skills, so the installation of the window sill, if you have the necessary tools, can be done by hand.

A large selection of polyvinyl chloride boards allows you to choose a product with the necessary characteristics according to the following parameters:
There are several reasons why the owners of an apartment or house decide to install a window sill on their own:
To successfully install the window sill on your own, you will need to additionally purchase two end caps, they are attached to the side sections of the product at the final stage of work. And when joining two sill panels at an angle or in a straight line, they get a universal PVC connector.
The quality of the work performed, the ease and convenience of carrying out them, the service life of the entire window construction.First of all, you need to prepare:
Before you put the window sill, you need to prepare the place , side slopes and the lower part of the window opening. Depressions in the slopes are additional support for the canvas on the sides, so the panel should go slightly into the walls. To do this, attaching it to the wall, apply appropriate marks on each side with a pencil (marker). Next, choose the grooves, going deeper by 1–2 cm. This work, in order to exclude the formation of large holes and excessive damage to the slopes, should be carried out very carefully.
In the presence of metal perforated corners, horizontal cuts in the slopes will be correctly made with the help of a grinder, then the cut will turn out to be absolutely even. Finish the rest of the indentation with a chisel and hammer, which work well on any soft surface such as gypsum plaster. If the walls are made of concrete, then the side grooves are made with a perforator with a special nozzle in the form of a chisel.
Only after that, the bottom of the window opening is prepared with an installed support profile, to which the sill is adjoined and aligned relative to the window. The surface is cleaned of the remnants of plaster, concrete, brick and dust generated during the work with slopes is swept away. For better adhesion to the polyurethane foam, moisten the prepared base, but it will competently use a primer, applying it on the surface with a brush. Having impregnated all pits, bulges and cracks with itself, it will securely hold the base.
Before starting the installation, you will need to take measurements, on the correctness of which it depends appearance, the strength of the future structure. Therefore, in addition to the characteristics and properties of a product made of polyvinyl chloride, it is necessary to take into account such nuances as its thickness and the distance between the battery and the window sill. Otherwise hanging over heating device the stove, disrupting the air circulation, will cause a deterioration in the microclimate in the room.
The length of the panel to be installed must exceed the distance between the slopes and go into them to a depth of two to three centimeters. The width is selected arbitrarily, but since the window sill is located above the battery, the front protrusion is made no more than 8 cm, which is necessary for normal heating and movement of air masses inside the room. For this reason, the vertical distance from the battery is maintained at least 10 cm.
On the sides of the window sill, gaps of 5 mm must be left. Their presence will avoid damage caused by deformation of the panel when it is heated from the battery or under the influence of sunlight. To maintain the required distance, beacons with a thickness of 5 mm are used, which are removed at the final stage of work, and the cracks formed in their place are sealed with a sealant.
In accordance with the measurements taken, a window sill of the required length and width is cut from the workpiece. To do this, it is better to use a jigsaw or a grinder, a hacksaw with a fine-toothed metal saw, which will allow you to get perfectly smooth edges. Since plastic is a brittle material, sawing should be done carefully, without excessive force.
If the above requirements are not met, chips, cracks are formed, and the edge of the panel will turn out to be uneven. Work must be carried out in compliance with all safety measures, therefore, to protect against small particles formed during intensive cutting, work gloves and goggles must be worn.
There are several ways how to install a window sill.
Additional rigidity of the structure, regardless of the chosen installation method, is given by placing special linings under the window sill and filling the resulting voids with polyurethane foam.
It is easier and more convenient to fix the product on the mounting foam, having previously aligned it on a level on wooden or plastic supports. They can be prepared in very different thicknesses, lengths and widths, which facilitates height adjustment. If the space between the base and the window sill exceeds 100 mm, then it is partially filled with mortar, while leveling the surface. A gap of a few centimeters is sufficient for the foam.
The supports are installed, maintaining a distance of 400–500 mm between them, but in an amount of at least three units - one in the center, two at the edges. The thickness of the substrate is chosen so that the window sill fits exactly between the supports and the lower edge of the window. Further, special mounting plates bent at an angle are screwed onto the support profile to hold the panel. By compressing the front of the workpiece, they minimize the chance of a gap forming. Long screws can be used instead of plates.
Having prepared the supports and installing the panel, preliminary alignment is performed relative to the horizon. If the space under the window is planned to be filled mineral wool, and not polyurethane foam, then the plate is removed and the supports are glued to the base with silicone glue.
Having removed a part of the protective film on the sides - in the places of abutment to the slopes, end caps are attached to them. The panel is carefully wound up and, resting on the substrates, is inserted into place. With a light tapping, the window sill is adjusted to the window until it stops, thereby aligning it in width.
Recheck the position relative to the horizon in the transverse and longitudinal directions. Ideally, the level air bubble should be centered, but slightly offset towards the room. Then the presence of a slope will prevent the accumulation of moisture.
When installing a window sill on a balcony or loggia, there are nuances. Since there is no reliable support, the workpiece has to be fixed on the brackets. They are pre-mounted on a support profile or lower on the wall using self-tapping screws with press washers. The minimum number of brackets for one window sill is at least 4 pieces. It is recommended to maintain a distance of no more than 25 cm between them. For the reliability of the structure, additional fastening of the panel with the frame to screws is carried out.
When the polyurethane foam hardens, it increases in volume, and the window sill can, when raised, deform. Therefore, before foaming the window-sill space, the panel is loaded using any available weighting materials - containers with water, books, collapsible dumbbells. They will hold it in place, and the foam will be squeezed out along its entire length. The surplus of the hardened foam is cut off with a knife and the final finishing is carried out.
After installing the window sill, all gaps and cracks found in the area of the slopes and at the bottom of the window are eliminated using silicone sealant. It is applied in a thin strip and compacted by swiping with your finger. The surplus is promptly removed with a damp cloth. Once dry, this will be more difficult and the result will be less flavorful.
Also, remove excess dried foam, cutting it off with a clerical knife to a depth of 1 cm.Further, the surface under the panel and the detected large voids flush with the wall are filled ordinary plaster... On the ends of the window sill, using glue for PVC products, plugs are installed. At the end of all work, after the final finishing of the slopes, it remains to remove the protective film.
As you can see, installing a window sill on your own does not require special skills. The only significant obstacle may be the lack of the necessary tool and the purchase Supplies(their leftovers may no longer be useful). Accordingly, the costs will be higher than the services of a qualified specialist.
There is work that is simply impossible to cope with alone, but installing a window sill on a plastic window with your own hands is within the power of everyone.
To install something, you first need to select and buy this item. If the purchase of a window sill is only planned, then it is worth examining the varieties of this element. What we are going to do now, and installing window sills on the windows with our own hands will wait for now.
The window sill has a practical and decorative function. These two parameters are equally important, so you need to carefully select the window sill, taking into account its functional and practical features, appearance and ability to keep it intact for a long time.
This is the whole theory that you should have familiarized yourself with. When the window sill is delivered, you can go to the very essence, and we are already ready to tell you how to install the window sill on the windows.
Do-it-yourself installation of window sills on windows is not a difficult job, but it requires compliance binding rules... Only in this case can a positive result be achieved.
Not always, when installing a new window, the window sill is dismantled. In this case, you will need to independently free up space for the new structure, otherwise it makes no sense to learn how to install the window sill and slopes on the windows. If this is not your situation, then you can safely proceed to the next stage, while we will now dismantle the window sill, which has already served its purpose.
This work can be done in different ways, which are determined by the material of the window sill.
When the issue is resolved with the old window sill, you can proceed to the next stage. To find out how to install a window sill on windows, it is necessary to prepare the surface for work, which we will now be doing.
Whether you completed the previous step or skipped it, in any case, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work at work. And only after that you can learn further how to install the window sill on a plastic window. The essence of the preparation is to clean the surface of various debris. Serious indentations also need to be repaired.
How to install a wooden window sill on plastic windows and plastic structures are different processes. Naturally, we will have to consider these two options.
It is necessary to make side grooves in the wall, this is required by the instructions. Their depth should be in the range of 5-7 cm. When you have to install window sills on all windows in the house, then these centimeters can add up to a whole window sill, which leads to additional costs. This subtlety should be taken into account when making measurements and calculating the total amount of materials. In extreme cases, you can reduce the depth of the grooves to 2-3 cm.
The grooves must be even, which means you need to use a level. Measurement is performed as follows:
This will create the top line for the future groove. Deep cuts are made along the outlined lines and excess material is knocked out. The window sill should not end right at the edge of the wall. The structure should protrude 5-7 cm beyond this border.
On this side grooves, and the slab itself can be left alone and learn further how to properly install the window sill on the plastic windows.
There are two ways to carry out the work on installing the window sill. The difference between them lies in the fixing of the sill to the window frame, which is done at the beginning. All further steps are carried out according to a single scheme, regardless of the chosen method. How to close up a window sill after installing plastic windows will also be described below.
The fixation process is straightforward. In the area where the boundary area of the window sill adjoins the window frame, we make through holes every 30 cm. Press the window sill tightly and screw the screws into the holes made from the outside. They should enter the stove by at least 3 cm, preferably more.
If the fixing described above is not possible, then the window sill fits snugly under the frame. In this place, you can squeeze out the polyurethane foam in thin strips.
We lay the slab and look at its position. It will not be ideal right away, so we align it as follows:
If the plate is not fixed to the frame, then polyurethane foam is used. The surface to which the foam will be applied must be moistened with water for better adhesion. The window sill is installed in its place, and foam is blown out under it. Here you need to feel the measure. Excess foam will still find a way out.
An object weighing up to 20 kg should be placed on the windowsill. In this case, the foam will not be able to swell and squeeze out the plate in the middle. The stove will be in the crushed position for at least 10 hours.
It remains to bring beauty (cut off the foam and put putty on the slopes) and be proud of yourself. We described how a window sill is installed on plastic windows, also made of plastic. Left unattended wooden structure, the installation of which needs to be done a little differently.
Some stages will coincide with those that have already been described, so we will not describe them in detail. The work is divided into the following stages.
We described how to properly install a window sill on plastic windows if it is made of wood. This method can be slightly modified to hedge yourself. The essence of the revision is to drive a long nail into the wedges. The nail should go through and peek out from above by a centimeter. Anchors are used to fix the wedges. In this case, the sill rests on the nails that protrude from the wedges. This method is more reliable, but requires utmost attention and careful verification of all parameters.
You know how the window sill is installed on plastic windows and nothing stands in the way of putting your knowledge into practice. Moreover, you even know how to repair the voids after installing the window under the windowsill. In addition to foam, you can lay insulation.
Installing a new or replacing an old window sill with your own hands is one of the the most important points when installing a window opening. Even the most beautiful and modern window designs will not look complete without this element. In addition to its beautiful appearance, the window sill protects the window opening from mechanical stress, and also helps to keep the warmth in the room. This is what determines the features of its installation.
The installation of the window sill, as a rule, completes the installation of the window, and it is done after the slopes are installed. This easy-to-manufacture structure, consisting of a small flat piece of board or PVC, has several functions at once.
The main thing is not to overdo it with the width of the window sill, otherwise heat will not get on the window glass at all, which can lead to the formation of condensation. It is enough to equip a protrusion of 5–6 centimeters.
When choosing the size, material and design of the window sill structure, it should be remembered that it must meet certain requirements. To date, there is no separate GOST for the installation of window sills. However, the basic requirements for heat transfer, sound insulation and joint stability can be studied in standard 30971-2002.
To summarize everything listed in it, it can be noted that this window element must have the following characteristics:
Many window manufacturers offer in their services the manufacture and installation of a window sill suitable for the entire window structure. And most often they have the necessary characteristics. The main questions begin to arise when the height of the sill surface above the floor level is chosen. Since there are no standards for this, each owner relies on his own preferences. However, there are a number of recommendations in order to make this parameter optimal.
When determining the height of the window sill, the height of the people living in the room and the placement of radiators should be taken into account.
When buying a new building or renovating a secondary home, it is advisable to take into account the future arrangement of furniture. The height of the structure located in the living room often depends on the view from the window. If you have a beautiful landscape or a picture of the city, it makes sense to lower the level to 25–40 cm. If you want to hide an unaesthetic courtyard, then the level can be raised to 80 cm.
The windows in the bedroom are usually not too much big size to keep warm, and are almost always covered with curtains, so the appearance of the windowsills does not play a special role. Usually it is raised 90 cm from the floor in the adult bedroom and 70 cm in the nursery, since children need as much natural sunlight as possible.
For the kitchen, the width of the window sill plays an important role, which can be used for utilitarian purposes. Its height is best compared to the height of your kitchen countertop.
In the office, the lighting of the room comes first. The lower the product is installed, the longer the room will be illuminated by natural light. The average height is 60–65 cm.
The most advantageous option is to manufacture the window frame and sill from the same material. Such an ensemble looks thoughtful and complete. But, despite the popularity of this option, the structure under the window can be made from almost any material. The main thing is that it is of high quality, beautiful and affordable for the customer.
The most popular material in the modern construction market is polyvinyl chloride. The design with a hollow interior and stiff internal ribs is one of the warmest and quite durable. With its low cost, PVC products can be of almost any color and with any pattern. They are not afraid of cold and moisture, and will last as long as windows made of this material, so you do not have to separately dismantle and change them.
You should not save by buying very cheap plastic, as it will quickly fade and deform under the influence of direct sunlight.
Installing such window sills in a house or apartment will be more expensive than PVC window sills, approximately 3-4 times. Nevertheless, this price is fully justified due to the fact that acrylic is not at all afraid of high temperatures, unlike ordinary plastic. Having installed such a product in the kitchen, you can safely put hot pots and pans on it, without fear of ruining the beautiful glossy surface. The acrylic surface allows you to choose from a large number of colors and will last several times longer.
Installation of a wooden window sill is most often done in conjunction with the installation wooden frame. Budget option can be pine or linden. The tree species are impregnated with special protective agents and varnished. Elite yew or golden oak, mounted in chic country houses, are distinguished by a high price. The combination of a plastic window with a wooden window sill will look especially good if the frame itself is laminated to the type of wood that makes up the window sill.
Such window sills will look great in combination with furniture from the same material. MDF, unlike chipboard, is more expensive, but has greater resistance to moisture. Experts recommend using this material to replace old wooden or plastic window sills, which will not hit the wallet hard and can be easily done with your own hands.
Certainly, a stone sill made of real marble or granite in modern design looks amazing. In addition to its high cost and complexity of installation, this material is rather fragile and unpredictable. Traces from dishes and scratches from cleaning agents easily remain on the light stone.
A solid slab can be shattered with a light blow that accidentally hits a critical stress point. An excellent alternative can be a product made of artificial stone. It is not only cheaper, but also more resistant to mechanical and chemical influences. Such a window sill will likely be replaced because you want something new, and not because it deteriorates, since the service life of, for example, porcelain stoneware starts from 50–70 years.
All types of window sill structures are mounted on general principle... Since plastic windows with plastic window sills are the most popular option, the work algorithm is based on their example.
The first thing to do is to correctly measure all the required values. To determine the length of the window sill, you need to measure the width of the window opening itself in the place closest to the space of the room. To this value is added 1–2 cm on both sides to hide the raw edges with slopes. Then the width of the wall to the window is measured and a few centimeters are added to the value in order to deepen the product into a special groove in the window.
The resulting value is the width for flush-to-wall installation. In the event that the window sill protrudes, it is necessary to add another 6–8 cm to the resulting value, and the length of the lugs is added to the resulting length.
In accordance with the measurements, the material is bought and the window sill is made by hand or ordered ready-made version from the master.
Before taking measurements, the old window sill is dismantled, the surface is leveled and cleaned of debris and dust.
Before starting the installation, it is necessary to try on the future window sill and, if necessary, make a final adjustment. You can cut MDF, chipboard and wood with an ordinary electric jigsaw, and for plastic and stone you need a grinder.
Using a puncher, small grooves are made in the walls, where the edges of the window sill will go. Fine dust may remain on the surface after working with the hammer drill, so it must be cleaned and dried again.
From the purchased window sill, plastic films are removed at the points of contact with the slopes and the window, it itself is inserted into the groove of the window profile and the resulting grooves in the walls.
Wooden wedges are laid under the installed window board, starting from the edges and moving towards the middle. Such substrates should not protrude beyond the edge of the wall, the distance between adjacent wedges should not exceed 40 cm. The horizontality of the installed window sill structure is checked by level and, if necessary, corrected with an additional lining of wooden wedges.
Ideally, the board should have a slight (0.2 cm) slope towards the room. This will prevent moisture accumulation near the frame and the appearance of mildew and mildew on the windowsill.
A large (about 20 kg) load is placed on the leveled product, so as not to disturb the angle of inclination by accidental touching, and the space between the wedges is filled with professional polyurethane foam from a special pistol. Additionally, you can fix the board to the window profile with ordinary self-tapping screws.
Mounting foam that has got on the walls or the front surface of the window sill must be immediately removed with a damp cloth, since the frozen foam can be removed only with a special solvent, which can also damage the surface of the product. After a day, after waiting for the foam to dry completely, you can remove the load and cut off its excess. Decorative protective overlays are installed at the ends of the window sill, the protective film is completely removed.
Walls and slopes are restored to a neat look with the help of plaster, after which they are decorated with any decorative coating.
To install a wooden window sill, you must additionally purchase a thick felt and treat it with an antiseptic. It is attached to the inner side of the window sill with the help of shredding. The same felt is used to protect the ends of natural and artificial stone window sills before installation. These are all the differences in the algorithm for working with window sills made of different materials.
Renovation of an apartment or house includes the installation of window sills and slopes on plastic windows. It is known that the window sill, in addition to the aesthetic role, also plays a protective role.
In addition to mechanical stress and the influence of temperature, wooden, stone and plastic window sills are affected by moisture and sunlight.
All these factors predetermine the lifespan of the windows.
Installing or replacing them with your own hands on plastic or wooden windows is a simple process and does not require any professional construction skills.
Before making repairs and replacing window sills and slopes, it is worth buying everything necessary tools, which are needed to install a window sill under the window.
After all, correctly selected and good materials, the tools are pleasant to work with, as they increase the efficiency and quality of work.
In addition, the products and tools will come in handy in the future, given that the repair and replacement of windows will take place more than once, and the installation of plates will be done under each window.
All of them are purchased in specialized stores or window companies.
If the installation of windows will be done by hand, you will need the following tools:
Installation of a window sill begins, first of all, with measurements. First you need to find out the dimensions of the workpiece.
It should be remembered that the quality of all work depends on how correctly the required dimensions are determined.
The length of the workpiece should be chosen more than necessary, because then it will not be difficult to adjust the dimensions using conventional tools.
The width of the workpiece must be such that the structure does not interfere with the air circulation from the battery upwards.
If this condition is neglected, condensation will appear on the windows, and the flow of cold air will move into the room and it will be necessary to change the windows.
That is why determining the dimensions correctly in advance is a very important stage in the preparatory work.
Sometimes a situation arises when you need to correctly fit the window sills to the corresponding window sizes. First, markings should be made on the product using a marker.
Do not forget that the excess is cut from the part that is fixed to the wall.
In this case, the cutting lines should also be noted. They must go 0.5 - 1 centimeter so that the slab is rigidly and tightly joined to the window frame.
If the edges of the products do not retain the stiffeners, interior areas will lose the desired shape at the junction and bend inward.
Trimming is done by hand using a jigsaw, saw or a special hacksaw, and stone window sills are trimmed with a special diamond disc.
The main thing here is not to forget about accuracy and not to press with great force on the tool in order to prevent the appearance of scratches or chips, otherwise you will have to change the workpiece.
Also, do not forget about safety measures: do not allow small particles to get into the eyes and use gloves.
The workpiece is now completely ready for installation in place. The window sill must be washed and proceeded to the next stage.
When the measurements and trimming of the window sill have been carried out, it is necessary to continue the repair and start preparing the linings.
This is important to create small outward slopes so that water can drain outward.
In this case, the pads should not protrude so that they do not have to be cut off again later.
If there are gaps, they are usually covered with polyurethane foam.
When laying, do not forget to put plastic slopes or wooden windows... The lower slopes are cut to the wall, and the installation site is cleared of unnecessary material.
It is assumed that the gap between the window sill and the wall does not exceed 4 millimeters and quite tightly and correctly adjoins the windows.
It is also necessary to install metal strips and insert the ends of these strips into the lower plugs under the windowsills to avoid their deformation.
Repair involves the installation of window sills and slopes different ways... The first one is outdated and rarely used.
It means that the window sills are fixed with a special adhesive solution. Most quick way Is a do-it-yourself installation using self-tapping screws.
First, holes are drilled in the frame, into which these same parts are then screwed.
The section of the joint is filled with silicone sealant, and the edge of the window sill is brought under the frame, attracting with self-tapping screws.
According to the second method, the installation is carried out using aluminum spring brackets screwed in with self-tapping screws.
AND final way, which is the most reliable and assuming the use of necessary materials, consists in the use of special linings that are installed under various window sills.
There is different ways installation of various window sills, before use, the positive and negative sides of each of them are assessed and only after that - you need to choose the most optimal one, because the replacement of windows will depend on this.
The methods differ only in how various window sills, including wooden ones, are placed under the frame.
If the window sill has irregularities, then during installation, a gap may remain between its upper part and the frame. It is carefully filled with silicone.
After that, you need to wash everything.
Upon completion of the installation of the window sill, it is required to install the same (wooden or plastic) slopes.
To do this, both horizontally and vertically, you need to align the window opening with your own hands.
This process is carried out using polyurethane foam, which protects them from the influence of temperature. Next, the quality of the poured foam is checked.
If there are surpluses, they should be removed, and if deficiencies are found, it is necessary to refill them.
First - you should install top panel, which stretches along the entire length of the window installation and only then fix the side panel.
There are different approaches. Installation can be carried out using slatted frames, while securing the panel with nails or staples.
It is necessary to do everything as correctly and accurately as possible, while not allowing damage to the window sill, window and its slopes.
The second approach, the simplest and most convenient, is the use of polyurethane foams for installing windows, as well as masking tape.
An important condition for beautifully made slopes is the perfect vertical anchorage of the yards.
For the purpose of leveling, use wooden blocks and use a level to achieve a perfect vertical.
When all the necessary materials are installed, excess foam is cut off, outside and inside the room, before cleaning everything, it is necessary to apply rotband on the foam.
As soon as it hardens, the various external slopes should be painted with water-based paint.
Then it is necessary to remove the protective layer from the slopes, window sill, plastic window, wash off the spots and dirt, and at the end, coat all the cracks with liquid plastic.
At this stage, the repair is completed.
In recent years, plastic windows have become an integral part of any interior. Regardless of the style solution of the room, energy-efficient plastic windows and window sills made of the same material are placed in it. It is durable, and thanks to a wide range of decorative films, and very beautiful material firmly entered our life. The article will focus on how to properly attach a plastic window sill.
The most popular materials for window sills are wood, plastic and stone.
They have only one drawback - low strength.
There is no official classification of plastic window sills, but they are conventionally divided into several types.
At first glance, all window sills are the same and there is a desire to purchase the cheapest one. But professionals know several nuances that will help to choose the best quality product.
Having received all the necessary information, they choose a model that is suitable in design and size.
Advice: cheap plastic can turn yellow after a few years, so it is recommended to choose white window sills from the middle price segment.
Advice: in order not to be mistaken in preliminary calculations, it is recommended to call a measurer.
Before you install plastic window sills with your own hands, you need to prepare the walls.
If work is carried out in wooden house, then the number of tools will be required minimum, in concrete and brick houses more and more complicated.
Important: the window sill should not cover the battery. Impaired air circulation will cause condensation to form on the windows.
Tip: you need to install the window sill with a slight tilt towards the room, literally 5 mm. This will allow condensation to run off and not remain on the frame.
