But we are flat roof drains. Flat roof drains and aerators

Excessive water on the roof or improper drainage of it negatively affects both the overall stability of the entire building and the period of its operation. And if at pitched and hip roofs due to the slope, water can flow down naturally, then for flat roofs the issue of competent drainage is more than acute. The drain funnel helps to solve the problem, but here it is important to correctly calculate the number of elements and correctly choose the type of this irreplaceable part.

The roof funnel is one of the fundamental elements of the gutter system. With its help, the flow is diverted Wastewater from the roof - from the funnel, rainwater enters the drain pipes running inside the building or outside, along its walls, after which it goes to the ground, into a specially equipped sewer system or other containers for household purposes.

Funnel for water drainage with flat roof

Reliable and trouble-free operation of the drainage system is possible only with absolute tightness. This fully applies to funnels, the quality of the connection of which with the elements located below in many respects depends not only on the rate of water intake from the roof, but also on the overall reliability. roofing as well as the safety of the entire building.

In terms of construction, a typical roof outlet consists of the following elements:

  • cover - covers the top of the product;
  • grate - protects the drain from the ingress of foreign objects and subsequent pollution;
  • pressure ring - plays the role of a seal to give the product maximum tightness;
  • branch pipe - based on the type of drain, it can have a vertical or horizontal shape;
  • bowl (water intake) - receives water and transfers it to the drainage system;
  • glands - designed to seal the junction of the pipe with the branch pipe;
  • bolts (flanges) - provide fixation of the product.

Specifications and their features

Funnels for drainage of water from the roof are characterized by a number of characteristics. Manufacturers offer the widest range of all kinds of models, due to which problems with the selection the best option does not arise under any conditions.

Modifications for various technical and operational conditions

Materials for the manufacture of elements

With regard to materials, the funnel can be made on the following basis:

  • Plastic - the basis of such products is a hardened type of polymer substance that is resistant to various external influences and loads. Plastic drainage funnels are quite easy to install, often even without additional use adhesives, and also have a completely democratic cost. Their use is considered most relevant on roofs that are not used at all or are used extremely rarely.
  • Metal is also a fairly common option. Steel funnels have high strength characteristics, which allows them to be easily installed on roofs with high traffic, including those intended for training, active pastime, excursions and more. As a rule, such products are made of galvanized steel - tough, durable, reliable and immune to the destructive effects of corrosion.
  • Combined option- in this case, we are talking about a combination of two materials at once, which are used for the production of a funnel. Its main part is made of plastic, the upper grill is made of metal. An option is possible, both with galvanized steel and cast iron. These gutters are optimal for roofs with average traffic and load, such as those intended for recreation.

Classification of products and their distinctive features

Based design features, funnels are of the following varieties:

  • Bell-caps - products of this type have a convex protective mesh, outwardly very similar to a cap or a glass. Allows efficient handling of large water flows and provides good filtration to prevent clogging.
  • Flat - they are mounted flush with the roof surface without the slightest protrusion. Especially relevant flat funnels on exploited roofs covered with asphalt or tiles.
  • Heated - there is an electric cable inside the funnel, which ensures proper heating of the system in winter period and eliminating the formation of ice, which complicates the normal drainage.
  • One- or two-level - the first are relevant if the top covering of the roof is made of a waterproofer. The latter are suitable for roofs with possible displacements - unventilated or made of wood.
  • Drain funnel for flat roofs with and without seam - the crimp seam is a universal fastening option suitable for different types grounds. Funnels without it have an apron on a roofing felt or film basis, which is selected depending on the type of roof covering.
  • With discharge horizontally or vertically - the drainage of water goes through the gutters located perpendicularly or parallel to the facade of the building. A vertical system is advisable in combination with a typical flat roof, while a horizontal system is more suitable for an attic roof. There are also funnels with a swivel joint that can be connected to the riser at any angle up to 90 °.

Model with horizontal drainage

The product can have a very different diameter, the main thing is that it corresponds to the cross-section of the drain drain. Components with a diameter of 100 mm are most often used - this is quite enough for the rapid removal of even significant water masses from roofs of various sizes and purposes.

Construction quality requirements

The intake funnel must meet a number of aspects and technical characteristics, and its reliable and long-term functioning directly depends on such factors:

  • The connection of the elements to each other and fixation with the roof should be as reliable and tight as possible. If this requirement is not met, water will leak under the roof, causing not only its destruction, but also damage. interior decoration... To avoid such a nuisance, an additional layer of waterproofing should be used during installation, gluing it over the side on the internal drain.
  • Removable top cover. Thanks to this, it is possible to carry out a problem-free cleaning of the internal space from accumulated debris and deposits. As for the inner glass, it must be solid and connected to the body without the possibility of removing it.
  • The fit of the protective cap must be tight with the possibility of rigid fixation to avoid shears and displacements.
  • There must be a protective filter (safety umbrella) inside to prevent quick contamination of internal surfaces.

Features of the installation work

Roof gutters are not as easy to install as they might seem. It is extremely important here to carry out correct and competent calculations, which will allow the formed system to effectively cope with any water flows, regardless of their volume. Yes, and during installation, the correct sequence of actions should be observed - violation technological process can have dire consequences.

Calculation and basic installation rules

Before installation, the throughput is calculated, taking into account that a product with a section of 10 cm passes about 12 liters of water per second. With a section of 8 cm, the throughput decreases to about 5 l / s. If the diameter is 15 cm, then about 35 liters of water can pass through it in 1 second.

Roof outlet

By pursuing installation work keep in mind the following:

  1. The installation location of the funnels must be below the main roof level. The slope angle between the base and the mounted product must be at least 2 °, with an increase of up to 5 ° after about 50 cm.This slope is created when laying insulation boards, backfilling expanded clay concrete or pouring the base concrete screed.
  2. Drain funnels should be spaced as evenly as possible - the optimal distance between the elements is in the order of 20-25 m.
  3. No matter how small the roof area is, there should not be less than two funnels on it - if one of them is clogged, the second one will take over the drainage function. And with an excessive volume of water, one may simply not cope with its functions to the fullest.
  4. The distance from the edge of the roof to the nearest funnel should be 1 m or more. As for the minimum allowable gap between the elements, it is 50 cm.

Site preparation for funnel installation

Installation order

Installation work is carried out in the following order:

  1. The entire surface of the roof is marked out into flat areas, building them so that a slight slope goes to the center of each - this is where the funnel will be located. The easiest way is to perform this procedure even before the roof cladding - in this case, a slight punching in the installation sites will be enough
  2. If the waterproofing of the base has several layers, the roof drain body is placed between them, which ensures additional protection from leaking and protects the structure from possible destruction.
  3. The funnel with pipes is connected by means of special sockets with rubber seals inside. Even greater reliability of the joints is obtained by means of plumbing sealant - it is only important to ensure that it does not get on the inner surfaces. This can significantly impair the capacity of the drainage system.
  4. To fix the plastic apron of the funnel, fused bitumen is used, positioning the product in the required position.
  5. Cover the roofing cake with special mastic (bitumen is also suitable), after which the protective grill is put in place.
  6. They check the quality of the joints and their tightness - about 2 m from the funnel, pour a bucket of water and observe how quickly and in what volume it passes into the drain.
  7. If everything is in order, proceed to laying the cladding and further refining the roof.

Advantages and disadvantages of products from various materials

As mentioned earlier, drainage funnels can be steel, plastic and combined based on these materials. Each of them has strengths and weaknesses that should be taken into account when choosing. Plastic offer the following benefits:

  • high corrosion resistance;
  • immunity to ultraviolet light;
  • inertness in relation to chemical and biological influences;
  • excellent sound absorption;
  • slight tendency to contamination.

Among the disadvantages are the following:

  • not the highest durability;
  • susceptibility to sharp temperature fluctuations, especially with erroneous installation.

Steel funnels have the following strengths:

  • long period of work;
  • good performance resistance to external influences;
  • excellent strength data;
  • high frost resistance;
  • the ability to use in the most difficult climatic and operating conditions.

There are also disadvantages, including:

  • complicated installation procedure;
  • higher cost in comparison with plastic counterparts.

Reliable protection against water even in the most difficult conditions

It is extremely difficult to overestimate the importance of the roof drain and its relevance. Its installation is mandatory for flat roofs, although the installation process itself cannot be called too simple a procedure. It is better to entrust all the work to professionals - they will not only carry out competent calculations, but also equip effective system drainage in the shortest possible time.

Roof drains are the most important element of drainage systems when organizing roofs different types and purpose. Their main task is to receive rainwater and excess moisture from the surface with subsequent transfer to downpipe... Different models are used in conjunction with steel, cast iron or plastic pipes easily connecting with any of them.

The simplest roof outlet design assumes a wide rim, a glass and a hood. Among the basic requirements is a removable cover for easy operation. The hood must fit firmly into place. Special filters and leaf traps prevent debris from entering and clogging. The connection of roof outlets with an insulating coating must be reliable and airtight for which special parts are used. In another case, the waterproofing is placed on board the funnel.

Types of roof outlets:

Roof drains are classified by construction. There are direct-flow systems and elements with a horizontal outlet. The first are combined with vertically oriented gutters. The latter are used at facilities where the installation of a vertical riser is impossible. The effectiveness of both varieties is practically the same.

The performance of roof outlets depends on their diameter and throughput. The model is selected taking into account the serviced area. Used for manufacturing different materials... Often this is a metal or special polymers, characterized by strength, wear resistance and unpretentiousness. Materials for gutters are selected taking into account the materials for the roof. Among the variety, Termoclip flat roof outlets have proven themselves well.

Using roof outlets:

Before starting the installation of roof outlets, the surface is divided into sections to calculate the required number and location. The drainage system must be as efficient as possible. When fixing, it is recommended to leave room for the receiver to move.

When working with multilayer insulation, funnels are installed between the layers. Single layer systems use a piece of similar material. For some joints, aprons and other accessories, welding technology is used. Additionally, mechanical fasteners can be used, including screws and dowels.

Drainage systems are divided into open and closed. Open is what we see on most pitched roofs: a gutter runs along the perimeter of the roof, from which water flows into the funnel of the pipe, further down the pipe: into drainage system, into the collector, just at a certain distance from the facade (so as not to undermine the basement and seep to the foundation).

Closed ones are used on flat roofs. Here, the angle of inclination of the roof is insufficient for the water to drain into the gutter. Moreover, flat roofs are often surrounded by a parapet through which water, in principle, cannot get outside the roof. In this case, flat roof gutters are used. Through them, rain and melt water enters the riser that runs inside the house.

The funnels are installed at the bottom of the flat roof (flat roof also has a slight slope). I will talk a little about these funnels, installation and selection features.

Why flat roof drains are needed

Without a drain device, water will stagnate on the roof. This is not good: water gradually destroys the coating, penetrates into the thickness roofing cake, spoils the insulation, seeps through the ceiling into the house.

If there is no parapet, but flat roof has a noticeable slope (up to 10 degrees), drain funnels can be replaced by an external system, gutter + pipe.

Or the most unfortunate option: a knot of unorganized drainage from a flat roof. Its only advantage is savings in purchase and installation costs. Everything else is bad: an unorganized spillway erodes the soil near the basement, penetrates to the foundation. Streams of water over front door- also not a very pleasant thing.

note

According to the SNiP standards, an unorganized drain is allowed only in houses up to five floors in areas with little rainfall, if there is a sufficiently large distance to the roadway and sidewalk. But even so, it is harmful to the walls and foundations of the house.

In the presence of a solid parapet, any external drainage systems are not considered in principle.

Device and types

The funnel consists of a wide rim, a cap and a glass.

The systems themselves are divided into two large groups:

  • Traditional. There are many pipes in the house, there are also many funnels. The systems are mounted on overhangs or special projections located on roof depressions with a slope of 3 degrees. When using such a system, funnels are placed every 25 meters. All of them are connected to one riser.

  • Gravitational vacuum. The principle of operation is the ejection effect, in this case, the ability of one medium to drag along the other. When a vacuum is formed in the riser, water under the pressure of air masses is drawn into the riser at high speed.

note

The advantages of this system are high throughput, the possibility of self-cleaning of pipes, the use of small-diameter pipes, fewer hoppers.

Calculation of gutters on a flat roof

Funnels are installed on the basis of one piece per 150-200 square meters, but not less than two pieces per roof. Those. for small house 10 by 10 will require two, for 15 by 15 also two, for a roof of more than 300 squares - three, etc.

Features of selection and installation

Materials for making funnels are plastic and metal. When choosing, they usually proceed from what material the roof is covered with:

  • If it is a folded or metal-profile roof, then the funnels are chosen from metal;
  • For polymer coatings, funnels made of polymer compounds are preferred.

Installation requirements:

  • The connection of the funnel to the roof must be perfectly sealed. It is recommended to lay additional pieces of waterproofing at the joints. Moreover, the insulation should be glued directly to the side of the funnel;
  • If there are two waterproofing layers on the roof, the edges of the funnel are placed between them;
  • The funnel must be equipped with removable lid and protected by an umbrella from dirt;
  • The cap should be secured well;
  • In order to avoid freezing of water in the riser, it is necessary to heat the gutters on the flat roof;

note

For the installation of the funnel, hot bitumen or mastic is used, in addition - mechanical fastening (screws).

To prevent water from freezing in the inlet during the transitional season (autumn-winter-spring), ALL Tatpolymer roof outlets can be equipped with a heating system. The heating system includes a fixing rim in which a self-regulating cable is laid and fastened to the funnel body. The used self-regulating cable with an operating voltage of 220V, a power of 15W changes its heat transfer depending on the temperature environment... To limit heating and save energy, we recommend connecting self-regulating cable through a thermostat operating in the temperature range from -5 ° C to + 5 ° C. Otherwise, heating will be carried out at lower subzero temperatures, which is not necessary, since during frosts the snow on the roof does not melt and there is no need for water drainage.

Also, Tatpolymer funnels can be equipped with sealing gaskets based on fused or glued modified polymer-bitumen materials or PVC membranes. If it is necessary to create two or more layers of vapor barrier / waterproofing, drain water from several levels, use Tatpolymer funnels on inverted, operated, "green" roofs, it is necessary to use additional elements of Tatpolymer production: drainage ring, extension pipe, extension without a clamping steel flange, extension with a pressure steel flange, drain with a decorative grill made of stainless steel or cast iron, transitions 110/125, 110/160.

For roofs not having the ability to place vertical risers drainage systems D110 horizontal outlets are available.

Roof drains - important structural element when organizing a drainage system. Their main purpose is to receive moisture and redirect it from the roof surface into the drainpipe. This prevents excess buildup and prolongs the useful life of the roofing carpet. The performance of roof outlets is influenced by several factors at once: these are the throughput and diameter, which are closely interconnected. The mounting technology of different brands remains unchanged. As additional elements, you may need a leaf trap, an adapter for pipes and funnels with different diameters, additional roof fasteners for installation, an electric heating system or an elbow to turn the direct-flow drain into a horizontal one. A leaf trap to protect pipes from blockages and an anti-freeze cable can be supplied as standard. Just compare the different brands of Termoclip flat roof outlets.

Using roof drains

Roof drains are easy to use with all types of pipelines, including cast iron, steel or plastic. Installation may require special tools and accessories, but the process itself does not require a lot of time and effort. There are two main categories of roof outlets, depending on the type of construction: straight-through and horizontal outlet. The former are focused on vertical gutters, and the latter are used at facilities where the installation of a vertical riser is impossible. Their effectiveness is almost identical, so the choice depends solely on the specifics of the project. Among important features roof outlets - the material from which they are made. Special polymer compositions are in special demand, which differ in their low weight and price at high operational characteristics... The service life of modern plastics significantly exceeds some metals. When purchasing a roof drain, you must pay attention to its resistance to ultraviolet light and temperature extremes. Also, high-quality material is not afraid of aggressive substances, due to which it does not collapse from the effects of effluents from detergents... You should not save on the purchase of roof outlets, because such a purchase does not require excessive costs, but it plays a huge role in determining the service life of the entire roofing structure.
