We make a baby bed with our own hands: a step-by-step master class with photos and videos, ready-made drawings and diagrams. Making a crib at home DIY plywood beds

What kind of bed did you dream about as a child? Certainly not about those masterpieces of furniture craftsmanship that enthusiasts create today. Only your own desire separates you from giving your child the bed of his dreams.

Often, everything rests on the high prices of furniture manufacturers. It is much more rational to buy your child new clothes or a set of books for the next school year. Moms and dads, abstract yourself a little from the world of adults and plunge into the world of children at least for a moment.

Go to the nursery and try to look at it through the eyes of your child. Each kid perceives the surrounding space as a game and that is how he learns the world. In this he will need your help.

For example, there is no way in the world to more effectively wean a child from sleeping in his parent's bed, how to prepare for him the best place to sleep in the world. Remember how you built houses from scrap materials as a child. Isn't it an idea for a bed?

The author showed remarkable imagination - and so this project was born to create a crib in the form of an improvised house. By the standards of US residents, very little money was spent on its manufacture - only $ 200. In a furniture showroom, such an original bed would cost its owner at least three to four times more.

To make a crib in the shape of a house, you will need:

Materials:
- pine boards, bars and slats;
- glue for woodwork;
- persistent Oil paint at least two shades;
- resistant furniture varnish;
- furniture screws or wood screws;
- bolts and nuts for frame assembly;
- nails.

Tools:
- miter saw or any other suitable tool for sawing lumber;
- electric drill;
- grinder;
- screwdriver;
- joiner's hammer;
- fine-grained sandpaper;
- construction tape and square;
- paint brushes and a roller with a tray for paint.

Step one: selection of materials

Let's say you have two main tasks. Firstly, since you have undertaken to make a bed with your own hands, most likely you are trying to save some money from family budget... Secondly, given that the furniture is intended for use by a child, all materials should be as safe as possible.

In order to cope with the first task, be smart about the choice of the main material. Do not rush to buy first-class sawn timber from the supermarket. The bed is about to be painted, so no one will have a chance to appreciate the extent of your generosity - the paint will hide all the details.

Of course, the most economical option is to do the woodwork yourself and make bed parts. But for this you need a thickness gauge. The processing and adjustment of the material with a thickness gauge can also be ordered from the workshop.

Finally, another affordable option is to buy second-class materials or use second-hand wood. Supermarkets often sell short lengths of planks that are perfect for making furniture at home.

But how to choose paint for products that are intended for children? This advice will seem trivial, but pay attention to the quality formulations of well-known manufacturers. Whichever type the paint belongs to, even if it is made on the basis of solvents, in the hardened state, high-quality paints and varnishes do not pose a danger.

Step two: detailing the design of the bed

Collect all the photos from the master class and on a piece of paper list all the details that you need to make the bed. Photos and diagrams show dimensions in inches. When converted to centimeters, multiply the value by a factor of 2.5.

Please note that the bed frame is assembled from a back, front and two side panels, so you need not four posts, but eight.

The front panel has openings for entry and windows, and you need four additional cross-dividers.

One of the sidewalls is completely sewn up with boards, while the other is almost open and also serves as a second window, turned towards the sun.

The base of the bed is sewn with boards with a small gap. Instead of boards, you can use lamellas or a solid sheet of plywood, depending on the task at hand.

The back wall, turned to the wall of the room, remains as it is, and the front one is also sewn up with planks. In addition, you will need roof slats and roofing parts.

Prepare also the elements of the stairs. It will be permanently fixed at the entrance.

Calculate and indicate the exact dimensions of each part of the bed. You will need a lot of them at all, and getting tangled up in a heap of good is as easy as shelling pears. A clear plan will help you coordinate and act in harmony.

Step three: making parts and grinding them

Mark out the details of the frame and sheathing. Don't forget the stairs. Saw planks, blocks, and slats to the desired lengths using a miter saw or any tool available.

If you're using a belt sander for sanding, it's time to start sanding the wood. After assembly, you can use the orbital sander, and the belt sander will be out of work here.

Pay particular attention to the edges you cut along. Any surface in preparation for painting must be flat and smooth.

Step four: assembling the crib

Assemble each of the four panels of the frame using diagonal pocket holes and strong wood glue. By the way, this time you cannot do without glue. Such a large-scale and heavy structure must be assembled using glue, otherwise it will regularly require repairs.

The panels are ready and you have to connect them to each other. For this, use either furniture screws or bolts with nuts - of your choice. In the places where the side struts adhere to the front ones, apply glue to the joint surface. Drill holes for screws or bolts by joining both parts together as shown in the photo.

You can also use the metal fittings. The extra sturdiness hasn't gotten in the way of any bed yet.

Secure the entry and window crossbars. Screw the slats from the inside to the longitudinal details of the bed frame, on which the base trim will later lie. Sew up the front and side panels of the bed and the base under the mattress with boards.

Start building the roof. A special load on the roof structure is not expected, therefore, for the manufacture you most likely used slats or small section bars. Sheathe the roof with front side planks, imitating the roof. Install a cross-shaped partition on the window.

Securely tilt the ladder to make it easier for your child to climb the second tier. Use special metal fittings or bolts and nuts for this.

Step five: painting

The author used white as the main color. For the roof, he picked up a dark gray shade. The bed turned out to be universal and in such color scheme could be used with equal success for both the girl and the boy.

Choose resistant paints and an equally reliable varnish. It is better if it is a specialized furniture varnish - nitro varnish or alcohol varnish.

Apply two to three coats of paint and at least two coats of varnish. You can apply intercoat sanding during the varnishing process in order to obtain the most durable finish.

Is there not enough space in the nursery for separate cots? Build your own children's wooden bunk bed. We have prepared design options for you, accompanied them with diagrams and drawings, we will show the algorithm for making such a bed with our own hands, illustrating with photo and video materials.

A bunk bed for children or adolescents can also be made of metal, but not everyone will get a neat welded structure, and the appearance of such sleeping places is not too childish. Therefore, we will consider making beds from wood and lumber, since these are inexpensive and easy-to-use materials, warm, beautiful and homely cozy.

Bed frame materials

The list of wood materials from which a bed can be made is quite long. Let's highlight the most common ones.

1. Array. Expensive material and rather difficult to prepare and manufacture if you have no experience with it. Experience is important here. Although solid wood products are the most beautiful and durable, they still do not use a baby bed for a very long time - children grow up and begin to need other sleeping places.

2. Lumber - edged or planed board, timber - the most common and easy-to-use materials, provided that you are sure of proper drying, otherwise supporting structure can "lead".

3. MDF - fiberboard. The formaldehyde emission of the material is at the same level as that of ordinary wood. When drilling, it is dusty without forming shavings. Laminated MDF looks very attractive. An uncoated slab requires additional finishing, such as varnishing. You can order individual elements of the bed in a furniture workshop or a sawing workshop: everything will be neatly cut there, the edges will be glued.

4. Chipboard - particle board. Formaldehyde emission is increased without a sealed coating, except for the E1 class board. It is easy to saw, but does not hold the screws well. Suitable for non-stressed parts such as under-bed drawers. Backrests can be made from laminated chipboard (Laminated chipboard), decorative panels - the film coating does not allow formaldehyde to evaporate, but it is important that the ends of the plates are covered with a film.

5. Furniture board - a board glued from individual pieces of natural wood. It is beautiful, durable, even allows threading, but it requires skill in work, since it has internal stresses that must be taken into account.

When buying accessories, you should give preference to steel hardware. Aluminum is much less durable and tough.

Ways to connect wooden knots

When making a bed, you may need various horizontal and vertical connections, and the formation of corners. This can be done different ways... We present some of them for reference.

1 - half-tree connection; 2 - connection "in the paw"

1 - complete felling; 2 - the felling is not complete; 3 - steel corner

1 - connection on rectangular keys; 2 - connection on dowels dovetail"; 3 - connection in a root spine

Design options (drawings and decor)

Bunk beds can be different constructively and be differently decorated. So, upper tier can be located exactly above the bottom, be located with an offset, leaving room for the cabinet, or be perpendicular to it. The ladder can be composed of drawers. Another option is steps, which are hinged drawer lids. The bed frame can also be supplemented with drawers located under the lower mattress. To do this, you will need guides - runners. Sometimes something else is added to the bed: a table, shelves, a pencil case or accessories for sports.

Below are drawings of some of the beds with basic dimensions.

Now, here are some design ideas that might inspire an original bunk bed. Pay attention to how absolutely "waste" materials are used in some models - slabs, branches, trunks, driftwood.

Method for making a bunk bed

Some of the most inexpensive materials are pine boards and beams. It is from them that we will make a bunk bed.

Calculation of materials

When making a bed, it must be borne in mind that not only a child can sit on the lower bed, therefore the distance to the lower part of the upper bed should not be less than 85 cm. The size of sleeping places in the case of purchased mattresses is determined by their width and length. If you make your own mattresses from two layers of foam rubber in a cover from thick fabric, then the sizes are taken based on personal preference.

The figure below indicates the individual elements of the bed, and the table gives the purpose, dimensions and number of blanks.

1 - vertical racks (legs); 2 - external pads on the racks; 3 - boards of the supporting frame; 4 - upper and lower headboard strips; 5 - headboard center bar; 6 - side barriers; 7 - stair railings; 8 - stairs

Qty Size, mm Name
4 38x76x1730 Vertical racks
4 38x76x1730 Blanks for external overlays on vertical posts
4 38x140x2030 Boards of the supporting frame of the bed
4 32x44x1850 Longitudinal mattress support slats (not shown in the figure)
24 20x76x1000 Mattress support crossbars (not shown), cut in place
8 20x140x914 Upper and lower headboard / footboards
4 20x90x914 Headboard / footboard center planks
1 20x90x1510 Stair railing
3 20x64x482 Stair steps
2 20x90x1800 Railing railing, trim to the right size during installation

Assembly units

A bed is a piece of furniture that consists of several assembly units, which are then assembled into a single whole. Identical parts can be cut by fastening them with a vice or a clamp, so they will turn out to be absolutely identical. Before assembling, make sure that all wooden parts are clean, smooth and free from burrs. It is better to work with a special sander for wood or a grinder.

1. Headboard and footboard

These are two almost mirror-like elements. The difference lies in the incorporation of the railing into the foot, as shown in the pictures below.

Headboard and footboard

Detailed layout with the dimensions of the headboard and footboard

Installation procedure: 1 - dowel 8 mm; 2 - the rack and backrests are drilled simultaneously; 3 - this part is attached after assembling all the other parts of the headboard

2. Elements of the supporting frame

To assemble two supporting frames, you will need four prepared boards - the longitudinal components of the frame. For structural reliability, the longitudinal bar must be glued to the board and additionally screwed with screws to the middle of the board thickness. Between the bars glued to the longitudinal strip of the mattress support, transverse slats will be laid - the base for the mattress.

Construction and dimensions of the supporting frame board

3. Details of stairs and railings

The railing of the fence is just a processed board, the railing of the stairs is a board with a sample for mounting on the frame. The fastening points of the steps must be marked in advance, and make sure that the screws for fixing them do not fall on the screws of the frame.

1 - notches 38 mm; 2 - places of fastening of steps; 3 - ladder steps, 3 pcs.; 4 - fence

4. Assembling the frame

The footboard and headboard are connected at the bottom to the planks of the supporting frame using screws. After that, the transverse slats, mattress holders are laid, and the outermost of them are sawn off in the corners for tight installation. You do not need to fix them. The assembly of the second tier is carried out in the same way.

5. Assembling stairs and railings

The ladder and the railing are simply fixed to the frame with screws. If desired, the fence can be made from the side of the wall - for the lower and upper bed. Then you need four more planks.

Now the wood can be painted and varnished, the mattresses can be laid - and the bed is ready!

In conclusion, we suggest watching a video about making a bunk crib for real princesses.

DIY children's bed: drawings, photos, material of manufacture

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of adequate sleep for a child's health. Therefore, it is so important to get a comfortable and safe bed. By the way, it is not necessary to buy furniture for arranging a children's bedroom, because you can assemble it yourself. Read on to learn how to do it right.

Baby cot elements

Before we start making a baby bed, let's decide what distinguishes it from its adult counterparts. Among the distinctive features:

  • Dimensions (edit)... Mattresses for cribs are shorter and have adult analogs (see table standard sizes sleeping mattresses).
  • Number and location of berths... The bed in children's furniture is not made double, more often these are single structures. If you need to accommodate two children, the building is going to be in two tiers.
  • Operational safety... High-quality furniture for a children's room has no sharp corners and traumatic parts.
  • Decoration... Furniture for a children's room should be fun and visually attractive for a child.

Let's summarize the listed points. A children's bed is made of the same elements as adult counterparts, that is, a supporting frame around the perimeter, lamellas of the mattress holder, a mattress, etc. are used. But, all these elements have smaller dimensions, are made of environmentally friendly materials.

Elements in the construction of children's furniture are rounded at the corners and painted in bright colours. An important point- to ensure safety, high sides are used in the design of most of the children's beds. The use of such elements is mandatory in cots for children under the age of 3 years.

Determining the model

The choice of the design of a child's bed determines:

  • Children's age... The dimensions of the bed depend on the age - the older the child, the larger the bed.
  • Amount of children... A single-tier bed is built for one child, and with an increase in the number of children, the number of tiers increases.
  • Baby gender... The gender of the child affects the decorative design of the furniture.
  • Features of the room... In a spacious nursery, several single-tier beds can be installed, and in a cramped room, the structure is built in several tiers.
  • Project's budget... Material possibilities determine what materials it will be possible to assemble furniture from.

Basic parts of wooden beds

The design of a single-tier children's bed consists of a supporting frame, which is assembled from boards and encircles the product around the perimeter. At the corners of the supporting frame there are vertical supports that function as legs and as side holders.

In the upper part of the supports there are horizontal boards - sides. Bumpers for older children are installed on three sides of the bed, and for children younger age by four.

Slats are fixed along the inner perimeter of the frame, on which the mattress will be held. There is a free space at the bottom of the bed, which contains boxes for storing linen and bedding.

The design of a bunk bed repeats the design of a single-tier structure with the difference that two beds are held on the same supports. In order to make it easy to climb to the second tier, a ladder is used in the construction. To ensure safety, the side of the second tier is located on four sides.

Materials (edit)

Illustrations Materials and their description

Solid wood lumber... Boards, beams, furniture boards are all-wood environmentally friendly materials, which I primarily recommend for assembling children's furniture.

Metal... Children's beds can be assembled from rolled metal, provided that the welds are neat.

Particle board (chipboard). Particle board - not the best way in terms of environmental safety. But due to the affordable price, laminated chipboard is still the most popular and demanded material.

Oriented strand board (OSB)... From the point of view of environmental safety, OSB is worse than chipboard, since the formaldehyde content in these boards is higher. If OSB is used for the manufacture of furniture, then on condition that the surface is covered with several continuous layers of varnish.

Fiberboard - auxiliary material... Fiberboard (Fibreboard) is used as construction material, with which drawers are lined from below or the bed is covered on top.

About fasteners

If you will make a bed from lumber or particle boards, for fasteners you will need confirmations - universal fasteners in the form of screws with an increased thread pitch. In order to provide the fastening on the confirmations with greater strength, you can use dowels - wooden chops, which are driven into pre-drilled holes.

You will also need L-shaped corner perforated plates and self-tapping screws to fix them.

Corner fasteners are on sale, ordinary and reinforced with kerchiefs on the fold, as shown in the photo. When choosing, we give preference to reinforced plates, as they are stronger and more reliable.

About fittings

A children's bed is a simple structure, where the list of special accessories is limited to guides for folding the front wall, a pendulum mechanism for rocker cradles, etc. At self-assembly you can restrict yourself to casters for drawers, as well as hinges and latches for a hinged front wall.

Required tool

The choice of tool depends on what the furniture will be assembled from. To work with lumber, you need a basic set of carpentry equipment, including a drill, a screwdriver, a jigsaw, a router, a 5 mm hex wrench, and a measuring tool. You will also need free place, on which you can cut the necessary parts and then put them together.

Wooden bed

After we have decided on the choice of materials, fastening hardware and accessories, we will consider how to assemble wooden furniture for a children's room with our own hands. As an example, I propose the assembly instructions for the typical bunk bed shown in the drawing.

The structure, assembled according to the proposed scheme, is durable, neat and at the same time budgetary in terms of materials. The most important thing is that such a bed is easy to make yourself, even if this is the first time such work is done.

Illustrations Making a crib with drawers

Materials and tools... To assemble this bed, you need pine or beech boards with a cross section of 35 × 100 mm and 25 × 100 mm. To process wood, you will need a miter saw, a milling cutter, a drill, a key for confirmation, a screwdriver.

We cut out the details... From a 35 × 100 board we cut 4 blanks 1900 mm long, 4 blanks 1810 mm long and 4 blanks 800 mm each. On workpieces with a length of 1810 mm, we make grooves 35 × 100 mm as shown in the photo.

We make legs (supports). As shown in the photo, in the grooves of the vertical supports, we fasten the transverse beams, which will be the headboard and foot of the bed on the upper and lower tier.

Assembling the bed and installing the stairs... After the end nodes of the bed are ready, we attach the longitudinal boards to the safety barriers.

In the inner perimeter of the upper and lower beds, we install lamellas - mattress holders. We assemble a ladder from a board and a rounded bar, if there is no round bar, a step can be made from a board.

Installation of drawer fronts... We collect the boxes from the board as a rectangular frame, at the bottom of which the bottom is fixed.

For the convenience and safety of operation, drawer fronts are made without handles with recesses, as shown in the photo. We attach roll-out rollers at the bottom of the boxes.

Let's take a closer look at those operations that you will encounter during assembly.

Illustrations Details of the assembly process

We screw in the confirmations... To screw in the confirmation, we drill a hole - for this we use a drill with a special cutter. If there is no special drill, we drill a hole with a length of confirmation and a diameter of 3 mm. Then we expand the edge of the hole made to 5 mm to a depth of 5 mm and get a sweat under the head of the confirmation.

We screw in the confirmation so that its head is completely recessed in the wood. Subsequently, the mounting hole will be closed with a decorative plug.

Dowel holes... To install the dowel, holes of the corresponding diameter are drilled in the parts to be joined, most often 6 or 8 mm. The depth of the hole in each of the parts to be joined is 15 or 20 mm (depending on the length of the dowel).

The dowel is driven into the wood with or without glue.

Making the base for the mattress... For installation orthopedic mattress you can buy ready-made lamellas, like those shown in the photo, or you can saw the same pieces of boards yourself.

A barrier is made from a bar along the inner perimeter of the bed, on which prepared lamellas are laid.

Lamella base suitable for firm mattresses. If the mattress is soft, the base is not made from slats, but from a solid sheet of plywood.

Installation of swing facades... As an alternative to the drawers, hinged fronts can be installed at the bottom of the bed. Installation of facades is carried out on conventional adjustable hinges.

Bed decoration... Finished furniture can be stained and varnished if it is made of wood. In other cases, painting is the preferred option.

Alternatively, a bed made of wood or chipboard can be upholstered with a fabric pre-glued with foam rubber.

Homemade car bed

Illustrations Putting together a car bed

Supporting frame... From furniture board going to a rectangular frame - a box. With an electric jigsaw, gaps are cut from one of the ends of the box, imitating a radiator grill, headlights, etc.

Imitation windshield... On the sides of the body, openings are made through which the child will enter the structure. At the distance at which the hood is supposed to end, we attach a frame assembled from rails.

Installing the drawer cover... A piano hinge at the front of the bed secures the lid of the bedding drawer to simulate the bonnet. At the same stage, wheel disks are attached to the sides.

Mattress holders... Inside assembled box a plywood sheet is installed on which the mattress is laid.

Priming and painting... After the bed is assembled, the surface is primed and painted.

Given the complex design of furniture, for working with paints and varnishes preferably use a brush. The choice of paint is not important, the main thing is that it is completely dry before use.

Let's summarize

Now you know how and from what to make a baby bed. If according to the proposed step by step guide If you have any questions, ask them in the comments to the article.

August 5, 2018

If you want to express gratitude, add clarification or objection, ask the author something - add a comment or say thank you!

Parents strive to provide the very best for their children. In shops and markets, prices go up all the time. This applies to any goods, including furniture. Adults are forced to save a lot. They often have to arrange housing on their own... A do-it-yourself children's bed will cost less than one bought in a furniture store. Making a cozy bed is easy for a baby. This is done in a couple of days. Here you need to be willing to work.

Children grow up quickly and furniture is quite expensive.

To make a bed with your own hands, you need boards and beams made of wood that is poorly saturated with moisture, for example, pine or oak. First, two pairs of legs are made. For the headboard, the supports should be longer, since the back is higher here. This is necessary in order to be able to raise the pillow higher and to be reclining in bed, for example, while reading. Usually a do-it-yourself children's bed is made using the following materials:

  • bars;
  • plywood;
  • boards;
  • PVA glue;
  • stains;
  • varnish.

In an ordinary crib, a child can sleep for three, maximum four years.

Natural wood does not emit harmful substances, so babies do not have allergic reactions. Such furniture is reliable, durable and looks good. A properly made crib is the key to a comfortable sleep. If the room is small, the product is made in such a way that it serves as a playpen during the day. The size is taken based on the length and width of the mattress.

The bed should be as comfortable and functional as possible.

Usually they do not make it with their own hands, but buy it in a store. Children's mattresses are usually developed in conjunction with orthopedists. It pays special attention to the correct formation of the spine, and also takes into account the needs of the child's body in getting a healthy and full sleep.

In fact, a do-it-yourself bed for a child is made "at once", you will succeed.

Children from 4 years old buy a mattress on a spring block, where the individual elements are united by a metal frame. On it, the weight of the sleeping child is evenly distributed over the entire area of the product. For infants, it is better to use mattresses without springs, consisting of foam rubber. In the baby's bedroom, it is advisable to install the bed away from the window opening. This will ensure that the child will not be blown through by a draft.

To make a crib with your own hands, you do not need any professional skills, and the process will take a maximum of 3-4 days.

A chandelier should not hang over the child's bed. Light bulbs often burn out. Sometimes it happens that when a lamp fails, its glasses fly apart in different directions. A glass shard can easily injure a child. If there is a bookshelf hanging over your baby, you should make sure that it is nailed to the wall firmly enough.

The main thing is to use only high-quality materials and carefully think over the whole process from start to finish.

Basic parts of wooden beds

Though wooden crafts for toddlers are expensive, but individual parts can be bought at a reasonable cost. It is advisable to carefully grind the purchased blanks with your own hands so that the child does not get hurt on any protruding chip. The product consists of the following parts:

  • frame;
  • slats;
  • sidewalls;
  • backs;
  • legs.

As a result, both the child and the baby will be happy.

The frame is made of planed and well-sanded boards. The slats that support the mattress from below are made up of slats. They are inserted into the grooves cut out in the frame and form a grid for ventilation of the mattress. The distance between them is about 5 centimeters. The sides serve as a fence, thanks to which the child does not fall down. The supporting backrests are filled with plywood sheets.

But if the baby has a large physique, the parameters of the blanks can be changed upwards.

To support the mattress, special grooves are cut in the frame. Joiner's glue is applied to the rack ends. The slats are inserted into the holes. To make the fixation more reliable, self-tapping screws are screwed in from the outside. The backs are made using vertical bars connected by crossbars. Then plywood or wooden rods are installed.

Furniture stores have a huge variety of crib models for different ages.

The back and front sides are filled with strips and fixed with glue. The near side is made one third lower than the far side. This makes it more convenient to take care of the baby. The holes of the cross bars are filled with PVA glue. Then wooden fence rods are inserted there. The parts should fit into each other tightly, without any backlashes. With a square, you need to check the correctness of the angles. All angles must be 90 degrees. The collected sides are placed on flat surface until the glue is completely dry.

But the first factor in choosing a crib for a child should be the material from which the piece of furniture is made.

Required tool

If you've poured a lot of adhesive into the grooves, some of it will of course come out. There is nothing to worry about, because in a dried state, the glue is easily cut off with a knife. Further, the remaining panels are attached, which will serve as a headboard and footboard. They are screwed to the sides with countersunk screws. Each screw must be completely sunk so that their heads cannot be felt. Later, these recesses are covered with putty and sanded. During work, the following tool is used:

  • saw on wood;
  • manual frezer;
  • Sander;
  • corner;
  • screwdriver.

If necessary, we clean the shields over the entire surface.

After the bed is assembled, it must be decorated. For this, all the gaps between the connected parts are covered with putty. When the putty is completely dry, sand the treated areas with fine emery paper. Further, the assembled structure is treated with stain. This will protect the tree from the negative effects of moisture. After the stain has dried, a layer of varnish is applied. Since the furniture is intended for a baby, all impregnations must be natural, not containing toxic and aggressive substances.

Only drawback wooden furniture, sold in most stores - this is a "sky-high" cost.

During assembly work, the fastening screws should be screwed in as deep as possible so that they are completely recessed. The resulting grooves are later closed with plugs or covered with putty. Assembled structure must be reinforced with special corners. Then the finished product is coated with varnish or wood wax. If you decide to add wheels to the crib, then do not forget to make clips for them.

A children's bed with their own hands will cost parents a maximum of 17 thousand.

Advantages of DIY children's furniture

If the baby's room is small, the crib can be made with drawers. They are convenient for storing toys, bedding and baby clothes. Such functional furniture saves space, eliminates the need to clutter up the room with additional wardrobes or dressers. The advantages of a handmade baby bed are:

  • the ability to design a model that fits perfectly into the interior of the room;
  • confidence in the quality and reliability of the product;
  • the ability to use only materials that are safe for health;
  • relatively low cost.

Self-design and manufacture of a crib has advantages over buying a finished product in a furniture store

When all the details and working tools are prepared, it is necessary to carefully consider the process of making the bed itself. This work is best done outside the home, as there will be a lot of sawdust and dust. If it is not possible to work outside, the room furniture should be covered with plastic wrap, and the carpet should be removed from the floor. For a small room, you can make a bed, the sleeping place of which is on the second tier. Below, instead of a bed, a soft carpet is laid on the floor. This option will be convenient when you have only one child.

The best option is two large drawers so that you can put large toys and bedding in them.

On the first floor, the kid will spend time playing games, and on the second tier he will climb a ladder to relax. Usually the process of climbing to the second floor is a great pleasure for children. If the child loves to draw, a small table and a chair can be placed on the ground floor. For two children, the usual bunk bed... Structurally, such products are designed in different ways. The lower floor can be located exactly under the upper tier, or be located perpendicularly.

For beauty, the crib can be opened with a primer and varnish.

Sometimes the steps are also used as covers for the boxes underneath. Each such box can be used to put children's toys, linen, clothes. Before you start making a bunk bed, you need to decide on the place where it will stand. You also need to decide on which side it is better to mount the stairs to the second floor. If the room has a low ceiling, the upper tier should not be very high.

After you decide on the size and appearance beds for a child, view photos of popular models on the Internet and find the necessary drawings, you can start making a royal bed for a baby

The closer the child is to the ceiling, the more stuffy air he will have to breathe. On the other hand, it is advisable to take into account that an adult should not rest his head on the second tier when sitting down to the baby. The height of the first tier is associated with the convenience of sitting on the bed, as well as with what can be built below drawer for bed linen. Based on this information, we can conclude what dimensions the furniture under construction should have. The most popular crib options are as follows:

  • transformer;
  • sliding;
  • one-story;
  • bunk;
  • rocking chair.

In order for the size of the mattress and the crib to match, it is better to first buy a mattress, and only then proceed with the drawings of the crib.

In the daytime, the transformer is usually folded, thereby freeing up space in the room. For such a model, a special frame is attached to the wall, where the folded product is removed. In order for the visible front of the bed to fit into the overall style of the room, it should be decorated. The pull-out bed is made of two parts. As the child grows, it can be lengthened. For this, special wheels are located at the bottom. The two-tier model is most often made for two children.

From tools you will need a drill, jigsaw and grinder.

Conditions for the manufacture of bed parts

If you purchased wood material directly from the sawmill, then before proceeding with the manufacture of parts, the bars and boards need to be kept for about a week in the room in which the manufactured furniture will be located. This is necessary so that the humidity of the room is equal to the humidity of the materials. Otherwise, in the future, some parts of the bed may crack or warp. When the material acquires the desired parameters, the boards and bars must be roughened and carefully sanded.

All materials can be easily purchased at a hardware store.

The vertical beams of the bed should be of such a height that the sides and backs can be built over the upper lounger. The front edge of the lower tier is most often removable. A crib guard is an important safety feature. Special attention should be paid to its reliability. The fence boards are screwed to the support beams with self-tapping screws from the inside. The hats must be completely screwed into the wood. During the manufacture of the fence, you need to leave an opening for the steps.

For a small room, a similar version of a crib with a second floor is perfect, but there will be no first.

Ladders are usually made strictly vertical or inclined. First, two beams are attached, which will play the role of guides. Then the steps are screwed on with screws. The top step and the ladder itself are attached to the bed with long bolts. After the fence and steps are installed, plywood sheets are laid on which the mattresses will be located. Since all parts of this product are attached with screws and bolts, it can be easily disassembled and moved to another place later.

This process usually gives children a lot of pleasure, and sleeping on the second floor is much more interesting.

Such a bunk bed is very durable and reliably serves for more than one year. If you paint it beautifully, and then cover it with matte nitro lacquer, it will not shine with sun glare and will preserve the naturalness of the drawings for a long time. The inner part of the sides can be trimmed with a soft cloth that will protect the baby from drafts and bruises.

If the child goes to school, or just likes to draw a lot, the place under the bed can be equipped with a desk.

Thus, even in a small children's room there will be more space for games and other entertainment.
