Wallpaper stripping tool. Repair in practice: what to do if the old wallpaper does not come off

The look and style of any living room can be easily changed by simply replacing the wallpaper in it. At the same time, it is often not even necessary to take furniture out of the room. It is only important to know how to quickly remove old wallpaper.

Do I need to remove old wallpaper, and with what tool to do it?

If you want the new wall covering to please you with a flawlessly perfect look without any irregularities, bumps and roughness, and also serve for a really long time without losing its aesthetic properties, it is imperative to remove the old wallpaper before sticking "fresh". New material glued on top of the old one can come off at any time.

In addition, under the "ancient" layers, mold almost always forms and bacteria grow, which just allows you to get rid of a new wall covering.

It is usually quite simple to remove old wallpaper from a wall that was previously plastered, carefully plastered and high-quality over-primed. Especially if they were glued with simple wallpaper glue. The situation is more complicated with the material that was "planted" on PVA, wood glue or Bustilat, popular in Soviet times, and on a poorly prepared surface. In this case, one should prepare for a long "torment". Most difficult to remove at home paper wallpaper glued with the above compositions. But even this difficulty can be overcome if everything is done as the experts recommend.

In order to remove old wallpaper as quickly as possible, you need to prepare:

  • warm water in a bucket (you can add a couple of drops of a dishwashing detergent to it);
  • scraper or spatula made of metal;
  • a sprayer for spraying water or a foam sponge;
  • paint roller.

You will also need a piece of cloth (cotton), plastic wrap, tape for painting works, iron, metal brush, knife. If the height of the ceilings in the room is serious, it is better to immediately stock up on a stepladder. Before starting the procedure for removing wallpaper, you need to worry about the safety of this operation. Be sure to turn off the power supply to the room, close electrical switches, wires and sockets with tape.

Also, make sure that after the completion of the process it is easy for you to clean the room - tape the polyethylene film about 4-6 centimeters wide on the baseboard with tape. Attach one of its ends to the floor (with the same masking tape). Cleaning with these precautions will be much faster.

Removing the old wall covering - the order of work

Wallpaper on a paper or other basis is best removed from top to bottom - we pry their edge with a spatula or scraper and pull the strip down. We pry off heavily lagging areas with the same tool, helping the material to move away from the surface. In situations where such a scheme does not work (the wallpaper is firmly attached and does not want to be removed in any way), the old adhesive should be slightly softened. This is done like this:

  • wet with a sponge or sprayer old stuff;
  • wait 15 minutes;
  • once again we wet the wallpaper.

Recommended to moisturize small area walls, remove the old material from it, and then wet another piece. If you try to soften a large area at once, there is a chance that some of the wallpaper will have time to dry again while you remove the covering in another area. The liquid will easily penetrate the old material if you first scratch it with a scraper or a regular knife.

Swollen wallpaper can be removed relatively easily (use a spatula). It would be even better to purchase removers - a special chemical preparation that is designed specifically for removing old wallpaper coverings. It is applied to the wall, waiting for a while (it is indicated in the instructions for the washes), after which the coating is peeled off with a spatula. Such a preparation penetrates deeply into the wall and effectively destroys the adhesive layer.

Sometimes soaking and even using special washes does not give the expected effect - perhaps the pasting of the paper-based material has been carried out for a long time, and even with the help of Bustilat. How to remove wallpaper from the walls in this case? Experts advise using an iron and a wet cotton rag. The latter is applied to the old wallpaper and ironed. The wall material gets hot. At this point, it is very easy to take it off.

In some cases, after all the "tricks" of removing old wallpaper, traces of glue remain on the walls under them. You can get rid of them with a coarse emery cloth. It is allowed to apply it manually, but it is objectively difficult and time-consuming. It is better to use a grinder, which in a couple of minutes will make the wall "pristine" clean. After that, do not forget to putty it in order to smooth out all the unevenness of the surface.

The described methods will allow you to remove old paper-backed wallpaper. They are also suitable for removing coatings, under which there were newspapers (this is how our parents and grandmothers glued, trying to ensure that the material was held as tightly as possible). Modern wallpaper (non-woven, vinyl) is much easier to remove. More on this below.

We remove modern wall coverings on our own

To properly remove washable wallpaper (PVC or non-woven) produced by the industry today, you need to take into account the texture of the surface on which they were fixed, as well as the type of material. In any case, it will be much easier to "free" the walls from them than from the paper ones, for two reasons:

  1. Nowadays, adhesives are characterized by excellent adhesion characteristics, and at the same time they dissolve well. hot water or chemical washes (it is only important to use the latter correctly);
  2. Almost any modern wallpaper material is made with two layers - with a backing and with a decorative (outer) one. This makes it possible to remove only the outer layer, leaving the inner one as a base for gluing the new coating.

Let's figure out how to remove vinyl wallpapers- washable materials popular today. Their outer layer is made of externally attractive and moisture resistant polyvinyl chloride, and the substrate is made of relatively thick paper. If the base is properly glued to the wall, there is no need to remove it. It will be correct to glue the new coating directly onto it.

So how to remove vinyl wallpaper wisely? We advise you to carry out the work as follows:

  • we scratch the surface of the old coating with a spatula (you can also use a knife);
  • moisten the resulting cuts with warm water (washes);
  • wait 15 minutes;
  • make an incision in the upper part of the material (near the ceiling) (horizontally);
  • we pull the canvas (so as not to violate the integrity of the substrate, we perform this procedure very carefully).

Since vinyl is for real durable coating, the washable wallpaper comes out of it in solid strips, and does not break into pieces. Some species are quite heavy. It makes it more difficult to remove them from the wall. In such a situation, we advise you to remove them in layers. First, using a needle roller, a metal brush and a wallpapering tool called "tiger", the protective moisture-resistant layer is removed. Then the outer layer of the coating is perforated (removed) with the specified device. "Tiger", we note, does not damage the wall, while doing an excellent job of removing the film.

Filmed in the same way. The process itself is easier than removing the vinyl material due to the stronger non-woven base. As a rule, non-woven coverings smoothly move away from the wall after you pry the edge with a spatula. Construction professionals strongly recommend leaving the backing of such wallpaper - you will not find a better basis for applying a new material.

On a paper basis, the wallpaper is periodically changed to new ones. Removing old coatings is a difficult process that requires both effort and time. The speed of cleaning the surface of the walls from them depends on several factors, the main ones being the type of material and the glue on which the sheets were glued. The article offers to get acquainted with how to remove old paper wallpaper from the wall with your own hands.

The oldest known material for wall decoration is paper wallpaper. If earlier the canvases were glued with an overlap, then with a significant improvement in the quality of paper for wallpaper, a decrease in their thickness, richer and more varied patterns, the method of gluing them also changed - the seams became butt joints, which is especially difficult to perform and requires more careful preparation of the walls, due to the subtlety material.

If modern paper wallpaper is glued on the wall with old wallpaper without removing it, then after drying:

  • All wallpapers are stretched strongly. In this case, any irregularities, roughness become the reasons due to which the material will lag behind the wall.
  • Old coatings are dusty or stained. There is no chance that they will not show through on new ones, especially if it is white paper wallpaper, and will not "decorate" the room after renovation.
  • New canvases may simply not adhere well to old ones.
  • The glue used for new wallpaper contains water, which will soften the old layer unevenly. This will lead to the formation of bubbles in one place and strong adhesion of the material in another.

Tip: To prevent such troubles, you should play it safe and thoroughly clean the wall from the old finishing material.

There are several types of paper wallpapers:

  • Simplex or single layer.
  • Duplex or double-layer paper wallpaper.
  • Triplex or three-layer. This type of material has a large thickness, which allows, when properly glued, to hide some irregularities on the walls and, accordingly, they have a higher price.
  • Wallpaper paper with acrylic. Otherwise, they are called embossed with acrylic coating. Such materials have great strength and durability. They are more moisture resistant when glued, they do not get very wet, which distinguishes them from ordinary paper wallpaper.
  • Moisture-resistant, washable paper wallpaper with latex coating.

The type of wallpaper pasted also determines the method of removing it from the walls. On old rolls, it is advisable to find a label or a special tag with symbols indicating how to remove material from the walls.

This could be:

  • Removal without residue.
  • Removing wet.
  • Peeling off.
  • The embossing is not deformed.
  • Double wallpaper with embossed on the top layer.

If a person has decided to change the old wallpaper for a new one, this is a great decision. By replacing color range, texture and pattern on the walls of the apartment - the interior has changed and the mood has improved. Sometimes it is not easy to remove old wallpaper from the walls, but there are ways to help you do this without investing special material resources and without wasting your nerves.
However, in order to fulfill the plan, as well as to ensure that the new wallpaper adheres well to the wall, does not bubble or flake off, careful and correct preparation of the wall surface is necessary.

Remove old wallpaper from the wall

Preparation for removing old wallpaper consists of the following operations:

  1. Removing old wallpaper from the walls;
  2. Crack putties;
  3. Wall surface primers.

Before updating the wallpaper, you must first remove the old wallpaper from the walls. If the walls are plastered with cement mortar, putty and primed, and you used ordinary wallpaper glue for wallpapering, your wallpaper that has lost its original appearance, but has not lost its strength (it is difficult to remove it with bare hands), you will not have to spend a lot of time to remove such wallpaper.

But it may turn out that the wallpaper is very thin - it will tear easily, and if they were glued with PVA glue, it will be easier to cover the walls with plasterboard sheets than getting rid of old wallpaper that has stuck into the walls. However, there are no impossible deeds for skilled hands. It turns out that you can remove the wallpaper glued to the eyelid.

There is a huge variety of wallpapers, but it is most difficult to cope with the removal of old paper wallpaper, which was made in Soviet times, for two reasons:

The first reason lies in the peculiarities of the wallpaper itself.

The second is in quality characteristics glues used at that time (it is better if it was CMC glue, and much worse if the old wallpaper was glued with busylate, PVA or wood glue).

The process of removing old wallpaper from the wall with your own hands.

Soviet wallpaper does not come off whole canvases, so any novice builder is wondering if there are ways to rid the walls of the remnants of this coating. Usually, they are scraped off with great effort; a lot of time has to be spent on a small area. This is very exhausting.

But it turns out that there are ways, and not even one, that will help get rid of old wallpaper relatively easily and quickly.

IN Soviet time before gluing wallpaper on the walls, they were first pasted over with newspapers. The walls, on which there was already a layer of wallpaper, were not cleaned of them, but simply pasted new wallpapers onto the old ones. Therefore, over several repairs, more than one layer of wallpaper has accumulated on the walls, which are tightly glued to one another. Leaving this disgrace on the walls is contrary to hygiene: multi-layer wallpaper provokes the cultivation of mold and various insects. Because of this, unpleasant odors arise in the apartment.

This is most dangerous in cases of young children living in such apartments, because mold and fungi that infect the walls are the main cause of allergic manifestations that most quickly affect the fragile infant body.

In order to free the walls of your home from a relic of the past, you can use one of several methods, which are given below.

Preparation of the necessary tools and materials

Before performing work, stock up on the following tools and materials:

  1. A bucket of warm water with the addition of dishwashing detergent;
  2. Paint roller;
  3. Foam sponge or sprayer;
  4. With a metal spatula or scraper;
  5. Stepladder;
  6. Masking tape;
  7. Plastic wrap;
  8. Chemical remover for wallpaper;
  9. Metal brush;
  10. With a knife;
  11. Iron;
  12. A piece of cotton fabric.

For convenience, the wallpaper is removed from top to bottom. First, pry their upper edge with a spatula, and pull it down, continuing to pry the places that are badly lagging behind. If the wallpaper was glued with ordinary glue, this will be enough. If the wallpaper does not want to come off, it is necessary to additionally moisten it - this will soften the old glue.

In what order to carry out the work

There is a certain procedure for removing old wallpaper, which is best followed.

Due to the presence of electrical outlets and switches on the walls, follow basic technical safety rules before removing the wallpaper. This work is carried out using water or other conductive fluids. Therefore, turn off the electricity before removing the wallpaper. Then you need to glue the sockets, wires and switches with masking tape.

Using the same masking tape, attach to the skirting boards one side of the plastic film, which is more than 50 cm wide. The other side of the film is attached to the floor. This procedure makes it easier for the subsequent waste collection.

Then soak the old wallpaper thoroughly using warm water and dish soap or liquid soap. After 10-15 minutes, wet the wall with wallpaper again. Do not process at the same time large areas because, scrape the wall in one place, you will not notice how the old wallpaper dries on the other.

In order for the wetting liquid to penetrate better into the wallpaper, it is recommended to scratch the surface with a knife or scraper. When the old wallpaper paper is swollen, clean the walls using a spatula.

We independently remove the old wallpaper from the wall.

It is possible to use special chemical washes for wallpaper. Following the instructions, a solution is prepared and applied to the old wallpaper with a sponge or spray. These cleaning solutions have a high permeability. They destroy the old layer of glue well, therefore, after processing the surface with them, the wallpaper can be removed quickly and easily.

What to do if the wallpaper cannot be removed in the usual way

In cases where the expected result does not appear after soaking (if the old wallpaper was pasted over with PVA glue or busylate), steam the wallpaper using a piece of wet cotton cloth and an iron. Scraping must be done while the wallpaper has not cooled down after ironing.

Remains of glue remaining on the wall after using all methods to remove them, you can use an emery cloth and a sander. After that, the irregularities remaining on the wall are putty.

Non-standard ways to remove old wallpaper.

In practice, it becomes clear that old wallpapers are much more difficult to remove than modern ones. This happens for two reasons:

The first is that modern wallpapers are generally two-layer - this provides for their delamination. This means that you can only remove one top decorative layer that does not have its original appearance. At the same time, new wallpaper can be glued onto the backing remaining on the wall, as on a base.

The second is about modern species Wallpaper adhesives have excellent adhesion properties, but these adhesives dissolve quickly if warm water or special washes are used. This makes it much easier to remove the wallpaper.

There are types of wallpapers that can be:

  1. Paper - single and multi-layered, textured or smooth;
  2. Moisture resistant, non-woven base;
  3. Glass fiber.

Removing moisture-resistant wallpaper from plastered surfaces is not difficult if you use a trowel for this. These wallpapers are durable compared to paper ones and hardly tear. The removal method is selected taking into account the type of wallpaper and the nature of the surface on which they were glued. The walls can have a durable moisture-resistant surface, or they are made from drywall.

Secrets to Quickly Remove Vinyl Wallpaper from Walls

Two-layer washable wallpaper is called vinyl wallpaper. Their first layer is the base, glued to the surface of the walls. It can be paper or non-woven. The second layer is vinyl (polyvinyl chloride). It is thanks to him that these wallpapers have increased moisture resistance and decorative effect.

Don't try too hard to completely remove washing wallpaper from the walls, since they are specially adapted so that only the outer PVC layer is removed. If the base (first layer) has been securely glued, you can leave it on the wall.

The base material gave its name to the varieties of washable wallpaper. They may be:

  1. Vinyl;
  2. Paper;
  3. Non-woven.

If it becomes necessary to remove completely paper vinyl wallpaper, at first their outer layer is easily peeled off, and the base is soaked with water and cleaned off with a metal spatula.

Removing old non-woven fabric from the walls

If it is necessary to remove the old non-woven from the walls, it is recommended to remove only the outer layer, since the second layer is the non-woven itself, strengthens the wall and is an excellent base on which new wallpaper can be glued.

How to remove flesilin from the walls yourself.

When the need arises to completely remove the non-woven fabric, the base is easier to remove, because it has greater strength than the paper of the second layer. Pry the base with the edge of a metal spatula and gently tear it off the wall, doing it from top to bottom. Along the way, using the same spatula, tear off the wallpaper in places where it is difficult for them to fall behind. If the inner layer is poorly cleaned from the wall, pre-moisten it with warm soapy water using a spray bottle or sponge.

When removing wallpaper from surfaces that are plastered with cement plaster, plastered and primed before pasting the previous wallpaper, do not be afraid to remove them - you will not damage the wall if the moisture is strong, since such walls have a solid surface that is not afraid of moisture.

Removing wallpaper from plasterboard surfaces

Abundant wetting of the surface is not recommended, since moisture can adversely affect the drywall - you can remove the wallpaper together with the cardboard. And if the drywall was not primed before gluing the wallpaper on it, then it is generally impossible to carefully, without damaging the cardboard, remove the old wallpaper from it.

Therefore, in this case, it is better to use special washes. Scratch or cut the surface of your old wallpaper to make it more effective. This can be done with a knife, trowel, toothed roller or special wallpaper tiger.

You should not exclude especially difficult cases that may arise if the old wallpaper was glued on wallpaper glue, and with PVA glue - they will be removed with cardboard. As you know, cardboard is a material that is thin sheets of paper glued together. therefore, it will not be a big deal if a thin outer leaf instead of the old wallpaper comes off.

You just need to work diligently and carefully, carefully peeling it off with a sharp painting knife. When removing wallpaper from drywall in this way, before gluing new wallpaper, be sure to putty and prime the surface of the walls.

Removing liquid wallpaper from the walls

Liquid wallpaper is a decorative finish applied to walls and ceilings. They consist of cellulose or cotton flakes, dyes and other components. The wallpaper adheres firmly to surfaces thanks to the water-soluble glue, which is also included in their composition.

Liquid wallpaper is a relatively new coating that is easy to apply and remove. The glue is easy to dissolve with water even after it is completely dry.

To remove liquid wallpaper it is necessary to thoroughly moisten them in advance with warm water. Use a spray bottle, foam sponge or cloth. It is better to wet the surface abundantly and several times. After the wallpaper has swollen, it can be easily scraped off the wall or ceiling surface with a metal scraper or spatula.

Do not rush to throw out the mass removed from the surfaces - it can be used again.

There are some methods that can come in handy in case you need to remove old wallpaper as soon as possible. To do this, use special professional tools, for example, a steam puller. This tool is very convenient because it simultaneously warms up and moisturizes the surface of the wallpaper. Superheated steam will help you quickly and easily remove not only old wallpaper, but also dried glue from the walls. And this - with minimal impact on the surface of the walls.

Creative solutions often come as a result of painstaking work. Usually repairs start with preparatory work, which are performed for quite a long time, but are necessary. As it turned out, removing old wallpaper from the walls is not an impossible procedure, given the individual characteristics of each material used.

Before proceeding with the repair of the walls, you will need to remove the old finish from them, and it is important to remove wallpaper so that no large pieces of material remain on the wall. The cleaner you take off old wallpaper, the easier it will be for you to work with the surface later.

There are several ways to remove wallpaper from walls quickly, easily and simply. Sometimes people decide, as they say, not to steam and glue new wallpapers right on top of the old ones. In no case should you do this, and there are a number of objective reasons for this:

  • the surface of the wall will not look even, bumps and depressions will appear on it
  • old wallpaper can peel off, and with it new ones will lag behind the wall

Finally, mold often appears under the wallpaper, which can cause, for example, allergies. Therefore, the wall under the wallpaper must be thoroughly cleaned and processed, and this cannot be done without removing the layer of the old finish.

It would seem that it can be difficult to get rid of the finish, why do you need to talk in detail about how to quickly remove old wallpaper from the walls, because if you change the well-known proverb, rip off - do not glue. And yet, in reality, this work is not as easy as it seems.

List necessary materials and tools

  1. Spatulas of different widths. It is better to grind them before work, as they must be sharp.
  2. Warm water, and ideally - special liquid for wallpaper removal
  3. Steam generator. Of course, this device is unlikely to be at your fingertips, but if you still have it, then it will help you out a lot, doubling the speed of the wallpaper removal process.
  4. Roller with needles or the so-called tiger for wallpaper
  5. Polyethylene film
  6. Drywall knife
  7. Masking tape
  8. Sponge with bucket or paint roller and tray

It is worth warning right away that the list of materials required for removing wallpaper may differ from the above - it depends on the type of finish that you are going to remove.

Room preparation

Before starting work, cover the room with some protective material... When removing the wallpaper, a lot of dust and dirt will fall on the floor. It is best to stick the plastic wrap to the baseboards using masking tape.

Also, do not forget to disconnect the electrical wiring, because it is most likely laid directly under the wallpaper, and you will have to wet the walls, as a result of which a short circuit can occur. Also tape all sockets and switches with tape, otherwise dirt may get inside.

We remove vinyl, non-woven and washable wallpapers

Vinyl-based wallpaper is easiest to remove as it has a strong film applied to paper base... Just scratch this wallpaper with a knife, for example, and wet the entire surface. After some time, the liquid will destroy part of the glue, after which it remains only to cut the wallpaper and carefully separate it from the wall by pulling the edge.

In most cases, the wallpaper will come off in whole pieces. If small pieces of the paper layer remain on the wall after this procedure, then they must be additionally moistened and scraped off with a spatula.

Washable and non-woven wallpapers are removed in a similar way, since they are made of durable material... The only difference is that you will have to make cuts deeper and more.

Ways to remove paper wallpaper

First way: wetting with warm water
With paper wallpaper, things are much more complicated, because they cannot be removed in large pieces. In the process, they break, creating additional difficulties.

You can act according to a scheme similar to removing vinyl wallpaper: after making cuts and perforating the finish, wet it thoroughly with warm water, adding vinegar or any fabric softener to the liquid. Leave the wallpaper wet for twenty minutes, and then use a spatula to remove large pieces of wallpaper.

The remains will also have to be scraped off with a spatula, constantly wetting the material. If you decide to remove wallpaper in a large room in this way, then you will have to sweat - the work will take a lot of time.

Second way: use of special fluids
There is another way to remove paper wallpaper effectively. To do this, you will have to use special tools that penetrate the material faster and deeper than ordinary water.

Do not be afraid to use such substances indoors - they are completely harmless.
A special liquid is diluted with water and then applied to the wallpaper. You don't need to make any cuts, a couple of minutes after applying the liquid, the glue layer will begin to collapse, and you can easily remove the wallpaper with a spatula.

You can make the wallpaper fall behind the wall by itself - add a little bit of wallpaper glue to the special tool, apply it to the walls and leave it there for several hours. Thus, the wallpaper will lag behind the wall in a solid piece.

Third way: removing wallpaper with a steam generator
This method is only suitable for happy owners of a steam generator. The hot steam will release the wallpaper by itself, so it will take very little effort from you to completely remove it. By the way, with the help of a steam generator, you can remove almost any wallpaper, not only paper.

In principle, you can do without a special device by simulating the action of a steam generator using a hot iron and a damp cloth. But this way of separating the wallpaper from the wall will take much longer.

Fourth way: wallpaper removal with a spatula and a sander
It is possible that the wallpaper in your room is glued with glue that does not dissolve from liquid. Then you will have to arm yourself with a sharp spatula and a sander (a drill with a metal brush attachment) - and simply tear off the wallpaper from the walls.

In the process of such work, a huge amount of dust is generated, so take care not only to protect the furniture and the floor, but also to protect your own respiratory organs from dust entering them.

How to remove wallpaper from drywall?

Remove wallpaper from drywall it is not easy, because the top layer of drywall is paper, and it is important not to damage it by removing the old wallpaper.

You will have to use special tools to remove wallpaper glue... In this case, you will have to work very carefully, since a large amount of moisture can damage the surface of the drywall. When scraping off pieces of wallpaper with a spatula, be extremely careful not to scratch the surface of the wall.

If the wallpaper is glued to the drywall with glue like PVA, that is, one that does not dissolve from moisture, most likely you will have to replace the drywall sheets along with the wallpaper. It is possible that the wisest thing to do from the very beginning is to simply remove the drywall along with the old wallpaper, if you are sure of the moisture resistance of the glue, of course.

You need to start removing the canvas from the seams. When doing this, be especially careful around switches and sockets. Try not to leave a single extra piece on the walls.

That's all. Now you know how easy it is to peel off old wallpaper with your own hands. It won't take long. Good luck!
