!
Perhaps you have an old sewing machine lying around and covered with dust.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel "Vladimir Natynchik" will tell you how you can make a completely suitable and functional electric jigsaw from it.

This homemade machine does not require turning work in the manufacture. All you need are screwdrivers and wrenches.

Materials.
- Old electric sewing machine
-
- Spray paint blue metallic
- Sheet plywood
- Bolts, nuts, washers M6
- Seconds glue, soda
- A pair of bearings, these are suitable

The tools used by the author.
-
- hacksaw
- Wrenches, screwdriver
-, drills for wood.

Manufacturing process.
So, Vladimir found an old sewing machine "seagull".

To make a machine from it, you will have to remove the fabric feed mechanism, and the rotation of the bobbin. Those bolts that did not loosen, the master warmed up gas burner... After such a procedure, everything is very easy to understand.

In the upper part of the mechanism, the author made a small revision, lubricated important parts, and removed the regulators.

The old electrical wiring has also been replaced.

Then the master painted all surfaces of the machine with metallic blue spray paint.

He hastened a little with painting, the machine needs to increase the stroke of the rod. After all, now plywood will be cut, and not sewn together. He made a 20mm thick plywood lining and screwed it between the base and the top of the machine.

To avoid loosening the bolts from vibration, the author filled them with paint.

First check for functionality and blade travel.

There was a small problem. When the blade is loaded, it does not hold well on the rod, and shifts back.

In order to resolve this issue, the master made a special stop from an M6 bolt and two bearings with washers inserted between them.

Having made a cut in the plank, fixed the bearings in it, and cut off the excess bolt.

On the underside of the machine, he secured the thrust mechanism with superglue and baking soda.

Now a small test on sawing a piece of plywood. Cuts very quickly and without chips. Well, Vladimir gave a second life for an old car!

One of the most convenient stationary machines for figured cutting, has a very simple design... Craftsmen make such devices from a wide variety of materials and tools. One of the most suitable foundations for making a tabletop jigsaw is a regular sewing machine. At the same time, the device does not have to be new or have an electric motor. In more detail about the principle of work and the manufacture of a stationary jigsaw, we will tell you later in the article.

The principle of the jigsaw machine

Before starting to study the manual for assembling your own stationary device for cutting, you should delve into its device and a little, into the history of its origin.

First electric jigsaw was born in 1946, when the engineer Albert Kaufmann got the idea to replace the needle of a sewing machine with a thin file. For its time, the invention was highly original and received the public attention it deserved. Scintilla AG produced and sold jigsaws until it was bought by Bosh in 1954. To date, the period of validity of patents for inventions has long expired and a wide variety of companies have begun to manufacture jigsaws.

Modern stationary jigsaws are functional devices assembled from precise and reliable parts. At first glance, the models presented for sale may seem incredibly difficult to manufacture, but they are based on the same old principle of operation, albeit with a more optimized mechanism. Collecting a jigsaw from a sewing machine, we essentially return to the origins of this invention, partially complementing it with modern technologies.

The structure itself, which pulls and drives the saw blade, is quite simple and consists of a special frame and a crank mechanism. The movable frame consists of upper and lower arms of equal length, fixed to the rack. On the front side of the frame, a file is installed, and on the opposite side, a spring that performs tension. To move the file up and down, the crank mechanism connected to the motor forces. A more visual and detailed implementation of the above process can be seen in the following drawing.

Jigsaw from a sewing machine

The beauty of making a stationary jigsaw from a sewing machine is to minimize precision work. The reliable crank assembly is already connected to the needle mount, which can be easily converted into a file. In fact, in order to retrain the device, it is necessary to arrange a tension mechanism on the opposite side of the saw blade to be installed. In detail about how to make a jigsaw from a sewing machine, we will tell and show further.

As illustrative example, the Soviet electric sewing machine "Tula" will be reworked. Based on this manual, most other older models can be converted into a machine. If you have a different typewriter (which is likely), parts and locations may vary. In this case, the main thing is to approach the matter judiciously, with logic and use the tips below according to the circumstances. So, for work you will need:
  1. Sewing machine
  2. Nut with bolt (full thread)
  3. Spring or flexible metal plate (for tensioner)
  4. Metal corners (2 pcs.)
The above components do not claim absolute accuracy and are provided as a guide only. The sizes of the required parts should be selected based on your capabilities, focusing on the examples in the video below.

By instrument:

  • Drill (with a set of drills for metal)
  • Bulgarian (with a disc for metal)
  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
At the first stage of assembly, it is recommended to remove all unnecessary elements from the sewing machine, leaving only the crank mechanism and the needle holder connected to it. To set the saw tension, it is necessary to remove the hook located under the needle. If a motor is built into the housing, it should be left in the event that it will be used as the main drive. If the power of the standard one is not enough for you, you can remove it and connect a third-party electric drive.

If you will be using thin saws up to # 2 for sawing, the standard hole in the top mount will suffice. For wider blades, a larger hole will need to be drilled.

The bottom mount can be made from a regular bolt. To do this, you need a drill, a metal drill bit 3-4 mm, and a tap for threading under this diameter. The resulting structure should be as follows.

There are 2 types of sewing machine installation: above the table and below the table. In the variant we are considering, the device is located on top, when the tension mechanism goes from below. The author of the product abandoned the spring tension method in favor of a metal plate cut from a hacksaw blade. A hole drilled in the center of the plate serves as the attachment point for the saw blade. The steel strip itself is installed in improvised grooves made from corners.

At this stage, assembling a homemade jigsaw machine from sewing machine considered complete. The device is able to easily cut wood pieces up to 20 mm thick. With a more advanced tension system, a good spring, and a powerful motor, it can easily take higher values. Detailed process assembly, with the author's comments, is presented in the video below.

Alteration of the place of attachment of the needle under the file

Not everyone and not always need to carry out only curly cuts. More commonly, a jigsaw is used to produce controlled, straight and round cuts. In such cases, a thin nail file will be too slow, but a standard jigsaw blade will cope with the task quite quickly. And all would be fine, but such a saw will not fit into a standard needle holder. So you need to reactivate the logical hemisphere and “pump” your homemade jigsaw machine from a sewing machine. This, by the way, is quite simple to do.

Let's take a product from the following author as an example, although at the end of the previous tutorial this problem was also solved. The answer lies in stitching the needle tightening seat. For this purpose, a grinder with a metal disc is used. The shank of the saw itself also needs to be sharpened so that it goes into the hole of the fastener element with a bolt. Detailed examples are shown in the photo above, below, as well as in the video.

Other versions

If the above products did not suit you for any reason, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with two similar videos. Jigsaws from a sewing machine, assembled by their own hands by the authors of the following materials, have one basis, but various features implementation. The following videos will be useful as a source of ideas for making your own unique machine.

My master class will be useful to those needlewomen who have PODOLSK sewing machines. As a rule, such machines, having survived to this day, still sew quite well, but appearance they already have, to put it mildly, not very well. It's good that now there are many ways to make old furniture look good!

One of them is decoupage. Decoupage furniture is good because it does not require large material costs. In addition, absolutely anyone can learn decoupage, if there is a desire. And then surely all of yours old furniture will come to life and blossom with bright colors, or vice versa, acquire a noble appearance with a slight hint of antiquity.

So, I present to your attention a master class on decoupage of a sewing machine for beginner craftswomen.

Typewriter BEFORE decoupage:

My car AFTER decoupage:

From the materials I used the following:

  • white acrylic paint for basic work (I have washable paint VD-AK in a plastic bucket)
  • light green color for decoration (added to white paint)
  • napkins for decoupage
  • plain transparent file for papers
  • glue brush (best with a fan brush)
  • PVA construction glue
  • solvent for degreasing (I used solvent 646, but, as it turned out, it is better to use acetone)
  • varnish (I have a ZAPON)
  • a synthetic brush for applying varnish (I have it, as it were, trimmed with thinning scissors, especially so that the varnish lays down well)
  • sponge for tamponing (a regular dishwashing sponge or sponge is suitable)
  • fine sandpaper

First, I degreased the entire surface of the lid with a solvent and painted over with white acrylic paint in 1 layer.

After the first layer has dried, I painted over the lid and the bottom of the machine with a second layer of acrylic paint.

To make the surface evenly painted over, I also had to apply the 3rd layer of paint:

After the paint has dried, you can walk over the entire surface of the lid with fine emery paper, smoothing out all the irregularities and roughness.

Let's proceed directly to decoupage!

From the napkin, carefully pull out a fragment with our hands and use a file to transfer the image to the surface of the lid.

The "file" method in decoupage

The essence of the "file" method is as follows. On a wide flat surface we lay out an ordinary file for papers, and on top FACE SIDE DOWN we put a fragment of a napkin. Spray the napkin from the spray bottle until it starts to float in the water. We straighten all existing folds, expel air bubbles from under the napkin. Then we take the file out of the water, wait for the water to drain and attach the file along with a napkin to the surface to be decorated. We gradually remove the file, so that the napkin does not move at the same time.

Thus, we glue the entire lid and the bottom of the machine with napkins:

At this stage, it is very important to cover all the glued fragments of napkins with PVA glue, otherwise, after the water dries, they will wrinkle and fall off. We do not regret glue, we thoroughly coat the entire surface! And then we wait until it dries completely.

To hide the joints between the napkins and add brightness to my typewriter, using a regular dishwashing sponge, I tamped the seams and joints with light green acrylic paint (I added a little light green color to the white acrylic paint and stirred it well so that the color was uniform).

Side view

View from above

End view

In principle, it was possible to stop at this, but it seemed to me that something was missing ... Therefore, I decided to add butterflies to the flowers.

It turned out brighter, more fun and more interesting! Butterflies revived her, it seems to me !!!

At the end, I covered all the beauty with varnish and waited for it to dry completely. ZAPON varnish dries very quickly, I covered the machine with it 4 times with intervals of 3-4 hours between applying the next layer. You can withstand a longer period of time between the application of varnish layers, the main thing is to make sure that the previous layer is completely dry. This completes my decoupage of the sewing machine!

I would like to add that decorating the car was not an end in itself. It was rather a “field for training” in the development of decoupage. But I'm still glad that now we have such a bright and summer car at home. So she cheers us up! I wish you pleasant updates too! Decoupage helps a lot with this!

Sewing machine decoupage (process)

Hello dear readers! Probably everyone remembers the old foot sewing machines of the world famous brand "Singer", at that time such a machine was especially popular with seamstresses, thanks to the bed with a footrest, which allowed significant savings on electricity, and was also famous for its ability to flawlessly sew even the thickest materials. But time does not stand still, and now, years later, the old foot-operated typewriter was replaced with a modern electric one. Someone simply disposed of foot machines, others disassembled and put them in the attic, but the third, the most resourceful ones, used it in everyday life. Well, what can be done from an old sewing machine will be discussed in this review.

1. Tables for cooking in the kitchen and dining tables from a Singer sewing machine.

The perfect solution for your home is a kitchen dining table with a chic wrought-iron base. The table top can be made of solid wood, as well as transparent or frosted glass. As for the base itself, you can simultaneously use two beds from identical sewing machines or separate one forged base, push the resulting parts closer to the edges of the table top, and between them fix a crossbar made of strong reinforcement, which will also serve as a footboard.

2. Dressing tables from an old sewing machine.

For the dressing table, you can leave the entire base entirely, i.e. not only a metal part, but also a wooden worktop with side drawers and a hinged lid. To make the table look more neat, all parts of the bed must be sanded and repainted in suitable color... And in the section with a hinged lid (where a sewing machine used to be hidden), place cloth-covered plywood boxes, and fix a mirror on the lid itself from the inside.

3. Desktop.

In order not to unnecessarily spend money on the purchase of a new desktop, you just need to make a wooden tabletop and fix it on the base from the old typewriter. The result is gorgeous workplace with an excellent forged base, at such a table you want to do double work.

4. Table in the gazebo.

An excellent idea for a garden recreation area, such a table will significantly transform the entire gazebo as a whole, and if you also make a similar bench for it, as well as a barbecue, it will generally be difficult to tear your eyes off. The table looks expensive and solid at the same time.

5. Small table.

Some houses have tables for small things (keys, cell phones, flower pots, photo frames) in the corridor or hallway, so why not replace the boring monotonous table with a more elegant one with an interesting metal base. Moreover, for its implementation, no special costs are required, subject to the availability of an old foot-operated machine. It is necessary to decide on the countertop (wood or glass), clean, paint the base, and, well, connect the base to the countertop.

6. Brazier from the base of the foot machine.

A great idea for those who like to fry a kebab, and most importantly - the chic base is already ready, all that remains is to order from the carpenter a cut of iron for the upper frying box, then weld all the parts with a welding machine, sand and paint, wait for the paint to dry out and go to fry the kebab.

7. Bench from the legs from the sewing machine.

Perfect solution- creation of a base for a garden bench or chair from old sewing legs. Planks can be ordered from a carpenter, then all parts can be connected, and also painted or varnished.

8. A flower bed from an old sewing machine.

Such a flower bed is easy to care for, you do not need to bend over to thin out plants or remove all weeds, and it is convenient to water.

9. Sink from a sewing machine bed.

Another fresh solution is the washbasin on the bed from the sewing machine. A bowl-shaped sink mounted on a wooden countertop looks especially beautiful. The result is a set with a modern overtones and a vintage bias, such contrasting things are now very popular.

10. Locker for jewelry.

A ready-made cabinet with various compartments and mirrors on the doors is fixed on the base.

11. Rack for bedspreads.

At night, the bedspreads removed from the bed can be carefully hung on a special rack, especially such a thing will be relevant in a children's room with several beds, so the kids will be accustomed to order. On the base from the machine, a box with bolted beams is installed, on which linen or bedspreads are subsequently hung.

How to make a table from a base from a foot machine.

First you need to prepare the tabletop, you can order it from the carpenter or, if you know how to prepare it yourself. By the way, the countertop can also be ordered from the firms engaged in the manufacture of furniture, name the dimensions, choose a shade, and they will make an excellent countertop for you.

Further, if necessary, the legs should be sanded, and painted in desired color, after the paint has dried, you can start assembling all the parts, namely the base and countertops. We fasten the metal legs to the wooden tabletop with screws. That's it, a great table is ready!

Brazier with your own hands:

As you can see, it turns out that there are a lot of ideas of what can be made from a foot sewing machine, you just need to present the idea correctly, and then the result will be beyond praise.
