The price of such a boiler, in view of the simplicity of the design (housing with electrodes), is lower than the cost of the heating element, this is especially noticeable at high powers - from 100 kW and above.
Electrode boilers are usually more compact than heating elements.

Disadvantages of electrode boilers:

An electric current is passed directly through the coolant, which significantly increases the risk of electric shock, and due to the huge leakage currents, it is impossible to use an RCD (residual current device) in conjunction with such a boiler.

For the same reason, electrolysis of the coolant occurs, leading over time to a significant change in its chemical composition, and, accordingly, to a change in electrical conductivity. Also, electrolysis leads to the release of electrolysis gases, leading to the airing of the system.
Emitted electrolysis gases, depending on the composition of the coolant, can be quite toxic.
Thorough water treatment of the coolant for electrical conductivity is required.
The power of the electric boiler is not constant and strongly depends on the temperature of the coolant in the system, and with an increase in the temperature of the coolant, its electrical conductivity and power consumption increase, thus, at the initial start-up of the system in the cold season, the boiler's power for heating may not be enough. Increasing the electrical conductivity of the coolant to the required level at low temperatures can lead to the fact that after warming up the system, it can increase by so much that it will lead to a significant overload and an accident in the power supply network, as well as to the failure of the power equipment that controls the boiler.
The same effect (an increase in the electrical conductivity of the coolant with an increase in temperature) sometimes leads to an electric arc breakdown of the interelectrode distance (in fact, a short circuit) with a huge inrush current in the supply network and, as a consequence, multiple failure of various equipment included in this network. antifreeze and distilled water as a heat carrier.
Cannot be used for single-circuit hot water supply.
Without a significant complication of the design, it is impossible to carry out stepwise or smooth power control, which leads to large voltage surges in the supply network when the boiler is turned on and off. This is especially noticeable on high-power boilers.
They require qualified maintenance, specific knowledge of the electrical conductivity of water, constant monitoring of the current consumption is required.
Non-freezing coolant for electrode boilers is expensive and not always available.
