Saint Sergius of Radonezh medal. Regulations on awards of the Russian Orthodox Church

Medal of St. Sergius of Radonezh

The Medal of St. Sergius of two degrees - gold and silver - was established by the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church together with the order of the same name in 1978 ... Gold and silver medals appeared in the Russian tradition of awards before orders. There is information that gold medals (meaning that the medal comes from the word "metal") were awarded for the first time to participants in one of the Russian campaigns of the 15th century.

In the monastery, founded a century earlier by the "Hegumen of the Russian Land", of course, there was initially neither gold nor silver. Even the liturgical vessels were made of wood, even the books were made of birch bark. The only "gold" in the monastery were people - monks of the Sergius school. Each had his own labor obedience: Saint Sergius himself (the Life says that he possessed the growth and strength of two husbands) sawed boards, chopped huts, carried water for the brethren. And everyone, following the precepts of the hegumen, constantly worked: they uprooted the forest, built, plowed, wrote books and icons, erected temples. The main business of a monk is prayer. But external, physical labor never interferes with the internal, spiritual, as the monks say, “smart doing”.

One should not think that great deeds - spiritual and bodily - are the lot of ancient ascetics. Among our contemporaries, quietly and imperceptibly, sometimes, perhaps, no less feats are performed. And none of them expects either praise or an order. A modest medal, overshadowed by the name and image of the Monk Sergius, with the motto on the reverse side "Exalted by humility," is perhaps the best reward for these unselfish toilers.

The gold medal of Saint Prince Daniel, with the inscription "For labor for the glory of the Holy Church" on the back, was instituted in the Russian Church together with the order of the same name in the year of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus, in 1988.

The labor and virtue of Saint Daniel, the founder of the Moscow Danilovich dynasty, consisted primarily of thrift, fidelity to the precepts of the fathers, slow but sure strengthening of the Moscow State Center. Historian V.O. Klyuchevsky wrote this about his descendants: “Moscow Danilovichi are in many respects examples of moderation” and accuracy. He did not shine with special valor, these princes combined many less expensive, but more profitable qualities. First of all, these princes live on friendly terms with each other. They firmly adhere to the covenant of the fathers: "live for Odiphnos." They are very respectful sons: they sacredly honor the memory and covenant of their parents. Therefore, a family custom, paternal and grandfather's tradition, formed early among them. Hence the firmness of the steps of the Moscow princes, the evenness of movement, the sequence of actions; their work proceeds in an even and unbroken thread, like the yarn in the hands of their wives, obeying the movement of a spindle. To preserve their father's possessions and add something new to it - that was what their government thoughts were directed at. These properties helped their political successes. "

This characteristic perfectly reflects the ideal of Russian historical construction, economic development of the land. We need these qualities and talents like no others today. The bearers of these talents are honored by the Church with a medal bearing the name of the holy prince Daniel.

The medal of St. Innocent, "the Apostle of Siberia and America", was instituted in the Russian Church on the same day as the order of the same name (in 1997). In the center of the medal, against a blue enamel background, is the golden image of the great evangelist. On the back is the inscription: "For missionary labors."

The vast expanses of Russia involuntarily evoke the thought of an immense field for the exploits of the apostolic Orthodox Christian. And Russian missionaries from the first centuries after the Baptism of Rus tirelessly went with the Gospel sermon to the surrounding pagan peoples. They went not in order to conquer, subjugate tribes and nationalities to their power, to their customs - they went to give enlightenment, moral principles and economic skills, in order to include them in the space of world Christian civilization. Following the grace-filled covenants of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius, for each of the unwritten peoples great Russia Orthodox missionaries first of all created the alphabet, developed literary language, translated the Holy Scriptures and liturgical books.

This is how the contemporary of Saint Sergius, Saint Stephen of Perm, acted in the 14th century, and Saint Innocent acted in the same way in the 19th century. Their works and covenants are continued by contemporary Orthodox missionaries. A special Missionary Department was created at the Holy Synod, and a Theological Seminary with a missionary bias in Belgorod.

Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh three degrees was established by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on December 26, 1978. Orders I and II degrees are awarded to primates of Local Orthodox Churches, heads of heterodox Churches and religious associations, prominent church and state leaders - for their fruitful work to strengthen peace and friendship between peoples.
The Monk Sergius (1322-1392; commemorated July 5/18 and September 25 / October 8) went down in the history of Russia and the Russian Church as a great "educator of the Russian national spirit" (V.O. Klyuchevsky), reformer of Russian Orthodox monasticism, founder of dozens of monasteries ... He was rightfully called the "abbot of the Russian Land". But the significance of Abba Sergius went far beyond the actual church activity. The spiritual leader of Russia, it was he who blessed the holy prince Demetrius of Donskoy for the Battle of Kulikovo, and then sealed his spiritual will, according to which the great reign passed to the son of Demetrius, Grand Duke Vasily.
So, for the first time, the great reign became hereditary, dynastic, which contributed to the strengthening and consolidation of the Russian sovereign statehood.
First Order of St. Sergius I degree was awarded to His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Pimen - for his outstanding contribution for the development of relations between Orthodox Sister Churches, ecumenical and peacekeeping merits. The second recipient was Metropolitan Alexy of Tallinn and Estonia, now His Holiness the Patriarch. Third order received the Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan of Krutitsky and Kolomna Yuvenaly.
On the day of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Kulikovo, on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin, September 8/21, 1980. Order of St. Sergius I degree was awarded to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, founded by the great Russian ascetic.

Medal of St. Sergius of Radonezh

The Medal of St. Sergius of two degrees - gold and silver - was established by the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church together with the order of the same name in 1978.
Gold and silver medals appeared in the Russian tradition of awards before orders. There is information that for the first time participants of one of the Russian campaigns of the 15th century were awarded with "gold" (meaning "medals", because the medal comes from the word "metal").
In the monastery, founded a century earlier by the "Hegumen of the Russian Land", of course, there was initially neither gold nor silver. Even the liturgical vessels were made of wood, even the books were made of birch bark. The only "gold" in the monastery were people - monks of the Sergius school. Each had his own labor obedience: Saint Sergius himself (in the Life it is said that he possessed the height and strength of two men) sawed boards, chopped huts, carried water for the brethren. And everyone, following the precepts of the hegumen, constantly worked: they uprooted the forest, built, plowed, wrote books and icons, erected temples. The main business of a monk is prayer. But external, physical labor never interferes with the internal, spiritual - as the monks say, “smart doing”.
One should not think that great deeds - spiritual and bodily - are the lot of ancient ascetics. Among our contemporaries, quietly and imperceptibly, sometimes, perhaps, no less feats are performed. And none of them expects either praise or an order. A modest medal, overshadowed by the name and image of St. Sergius, with the motto on the reverse side "Exalted by humility" is perhaps the best reward for these unselfish workers.

Orders of the Russian Orthodox Church

Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called

The Holy Apostle Andrew (Comm. 30 November / 13 December) is called the "First-Called", because he became the first of the Savior's apostles. Immediately after the baptism of Christ on the Jordan, when John the Baptist pointed to Him as the Messiah, the Savior of the world, Andrew, forgetting about everything and leaving everything, went after the Teacher. For the Russian Church, the memory of the Apostle is also important because, according to the chronicle, the Apostle Andrew the First-Called was the first to bring the proclamation of the Christian faith to the borders of our Fatherland, visited Kiev and Novgorod, and blessed the Christian future of the Russian Land.

In commemoration of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus, by the distribution of Patriarch Pimen and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, he established three new orders on December 27-28, 1988:

  • Saint Andrew the First-Called with a diamond star,
  • holy blessed prince Daniel of Moscow three degrees
  • and the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duchess Olga, also of three degrees.

The Order of the Saint is awarded to the Primates of Local Orthodox Churches for outstanding services in strengthening Christianity. The Order is a Patriarchal award; it is awarded to persons only by decision and initiative of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and the Holy Synod.
At the awarding ceremony, a badge of the order, a diamond star, a ribbon and a certificate are presented. The diamond star of the order is worn on the right side in the upper chest, and the badge of the order on the ribbon is worn over the left shoulder and is located under the star of the order; all other orders are worn below.

Badge of the Order of St. The Apostle Andrew the First-Called has the shape of an oval. In the center is the image of the holy apostle. The saint is depicted in full growth against the background of a large four-pointed "St. Andrew's" cross, on which he was crucified. The original surviving particles of the cross, like the relics of the saint, are in the Cathedral of St. Andrew's in the Greek city of Patras.

Before, in the Russian Empire, there was the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called, established by Peter the Great in 1698 and revered as the main one among Russian orders. Likewise, today the Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew is the highest award of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The insignia of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called consisted of:

  1. the sign-cross, the main image of which was Saint Andrew, crucified, according to legend, on a cross of X-shaped configuration; at the four ends of the cross the letters: S.A.P.R. (Sanctus Andreus Patronus Russiae - Saint Andrew the patron saint of Russia;
  2. a silver eight-pointed star with the motto of the Order "For Faith and Loyalty" placed in its central medallion.

The badge of the order was worn on a wide blue ribbon over the right shoulder, and the star was placed on the left side of the chest. On especially solemn occasions, the badge of the order was worn on the chest on a golden figured chain covered with multi-colored enamels.

Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh

The Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh of three degrees was established by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on December 26, 1978. Orders of I and II degrees are awarded to primates of Local Orthodox Churches, heads of heterodox Churches and religious associations, prominent church and state leaders - for fruitful work to strengthen peace and friendship between nations.

The Monk Sergius (1322-1392; commemorated July 5/18 and September 25 / October 8) went down in the history of Russia and the Russian Church as a great "educator of the Russian national spirit" (V.O. The first Order of St. Sergius, 1st degree, was awarded to His Holiness Patriarch Pimen of Moscow and All Russia - for his outstanding contribution for the development of relations between Orthodox Sister Churches, ecumenical and peacemaking services. The second recipient was Metropolitan Alexy of Tallinn and Estonia, now His Holiness the Patriarch. On the day of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Kulikovo, on the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God on September 8 (21), 1980, the Order of St. Sergius of the 1st degree was awarded to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, founded by the great Russian ascetic.

Order of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir

The Order of St. Vladimir of three degrees is the oldest institution in the Russian Orthodox Church. It was established in 1957 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the restoration of the Patriarchate in the Russian Church. Initially, it was modestly called "a breastplate in honor of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir" and was intended to reward mainly representatives of foreign Orthodox Churches and heterodox confessions.

... Historians called him the Great, the Church - the saint equal to the apostles, the poetic memory of the people - Vladimir the Red Sun. Grand Duke Vladimir Svyatoslavich (960-1015; Comm. 15/28 July) managed to create a single mighty Holy Russia from a conglomerate of scattered tribes and reign. His main spiritual feat was the Baptism of Rus in 988. The prince did not impose a new religion on the people: he sent ambassadors to different countries"Test faith." And when the sent ones returned, he listened to them in the meeting of the elders and the people and, with the conciliar consent, chose the Orthodox faith - according to the criterion of truth, beauty and grace. "For," said the ambassadors, "when we stood at the service in the Constantinople Cathedral of St. Sophia, we did not know where we were - in heaven or on earth." The baptism of Rus for a thousand years ahead predetermined the moral image and historical path of our people.

The first awards of the new church order of St. Vladimir (then still called the "sign") took place in the spring of 1958. Among the first persons who were awarded the order of the 1st degree in 1959 were the Metropolitan of the Lebanese Mountains Iliya Karam and the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie I. The first Russian man, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy I of Moscow and All Russia was awarded the high award. The Order of St. Vladimir I degree was awarded to him on July 18, 1961, on the day of the celebration of St. Sergius of Radonezh, at the Bishops' Council held in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The order could also be awarded to churches, monasteries and entire dioceses. In 1964 she received Vladimir I degree from the Moscow Theological Academy, in 1977 - from the Leningrad Theological Academy.

The Order of St. Vladimir, like St. Andrew the First-Called, existed in imperial Russia. It was established in 1782 and has four degrees. Since the end of the 18th century. they could be awarded to representatives of the clergy.

Order of the Holy Blessed Prince Daniel of Moscow

The Order of St. Daniel of three degrees was established by the 5th Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on December 27-28, 1988 in commemoration of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus. It is awarded to both clergy and secular persons.

The holy noble Prince Daniel (1261-1303; Comm. 4/17 March) was the youngest son of Saint Alexander Nevsky. But in history there is an invisible gospel law that could be called "the blessing of the youngest son." After the death of his father, Daniel inherited a small, still unknown Moscow. He founded the first Moscow monastery - the Holy Danilov Monastery, where his relics will now be reposed. The holy prince never took up arms in order to seize foreign lands, never took property from other princes, either by violence or by deceit. God rewarded him with the future prosperity of the princely dynasty of the Moscow Danilovichs, from whom the great dukes and tsars of Moscow originated. "It was this original founder," let's say, in the words of Metropolitan Platon of Moscow, "that laid the foundation for the present greatness of Moscow."

The Primate of the Russian Church presents the Order of St. Daniel himself, as a rule, giving the award a particularly solemn character; the Order is also awarded to secular persons who have done a lot to revive the spiritual life of Russia, to strengthen its power and prosperity. Orders of the 1st degree were awarded to the mayor of Moscow Yu.M. Luzhkov, Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation I.D. Sergeev, writer A.I. Solzhenitsyn. The Order of Saint Daniel should be worn on the right side of the chest, the degrees of the order are placed in a line.

Order of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olga

The order was established by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on December 27-28, 1988, simultaneously with the orders of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called and Prince Daniel of Moscow. The order is intended solely to reward women.

The Grand Duchess of Kiev Olga, baptized Elena (969; Comm. 11/24 July), became the first Russian Christian ruler. Later legends call Pskov its homeland, and the beginning of its independent rule in the annals is associated with the story of a formidable retribution to the Drevlyans, Igor's murderers. Olga Russkaya went down in history as a great creator of sovereign life and culture ancient Russia... The chronicles are full of testimonies of her tireless "walks" across the Russian land with the aim of improving myself and streamlining civil and economic life. The princess put in a lot of work to strengthen the country's defensive power. A radical transformation of the religious life of Rus' seemed to her no less urgent. In 946 Olga went with a large fleet to Constantinople. It was a peaceful walk, combining the tasks of a religious pilgrimage and a diplomatic mission - the development of a friendly Russian-Byzantine dialogue. The heart of the princess opened to Orthodoxy, she decides to become a Christian. The sacrament of baptism was performed on her by the Patriarch of Constantinople Theophylact, and the emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus himself was the recipient of the font. Upon her return to Kiev, Olga built the first, still wooden, church of Sophia the Wisdom of God. God glorified the ascetic princess with miracles and incorruptible relics. The grandson raised by her, Grand Duke Vladimir Krasnoe Solnyshko, 20 years after the death of the princess, will make Christianity the state religion of Russia.

... In Russia, until 1917, there was already an award of this name, on the initiative of the famous publicist M.O. Menshikov of the "Society of St. Olga", in 1914 the "insignia of St. Olga" was imperially approved. He was called to celebrate "the merits of women in various fields of government and public service, as well as their exploits and labors for the benefit of their neighbor." The insignia of Saint Olga was presented only once. In 1916 Vera Nikolaevna Panaeva was awarded the second degree of the insignia, having lost her three sons-officers in the battles of the First World War.

Order of the Holy Martyr Tryphon

The Order of the Holy Martyr Tryphon of three degrees was established by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on February 22, 1995. The Order is awarded to clergy, church, state and public figures, law enforcement officials, writers and journalists, medical workers and educators for their active work in the fight against alcoholism, drug addiction , other destructive phenomena in the spiritual life of society.

The Holy Martyr Tryphon (February 1/14) from his youth had the grace from God to cast out demons and heal the sick.We rarely now associate one thing with another in our minds, but in the Orthodox understanding, sin is not only and not so much a crime, but damage, illness ... “God did not create death,” it says in the Scripture; sickness and death entered the world with original sin, violation of God's commandments. Accordingly, it is necessary to treat both body and soul at the same time: ailment and its primary source is sin. To heal is to restore chastity and wholeness to a person. Without prayer, without the grace of God, it is impossible to heal any bodily, spiritual, or social, civilizational ailments, which include alcoholism, drug addiction, insanity under the influence of economic stress, information psychoses, and totalitarian sects. Just such a blessed healer was Saint Tryphon, who suffered a martyr's death during the era of anti-Christian persecution under the Roman emperor Decius (250).

The order has three degrees. The first is a silver cross with gilding, the second is a silver cross, and the third is a silver cross from a jewelry alloy. In our time, when without the joint efforts of the Church and society, the state and charitable foundations, businessmen and the media, it is impossible effective fight with social illnesses and disorders, the image of the holy martyr Tryphon, an unselfish healer, who asked those healed by him for one thing - to preserve the faith of Christ, strengthens and supports us.

Order of St. Innocent, Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna

The Order of St. Innocent was established in the Russian Church (in 1997) in connection with the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the saint of God.

Saint Innocent (Veniaminov; 1797 - 1879; commemorated March 31 / April 13 and September 23 / October 6) occupies a special place in the history of Russian holiness. He went from a rural parish priest in the Irkutsk diocese to the cathedra of Moscow saints. Apostle of Siberia and America, he truly carried the gospel of God “even to the ends of the earth”, preached to the Yakuts, Chukchi, Eskimos and Aleuts, compiled a grammar and the first dictionary of the Aleut language. Already being Metropolitan of Moscow, he founded the Orthodox Missionary Society.

In February 1999, when the 70th anniversary of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II was celebrated, by the decision of the Holy Synod, he was awarded the newly established Order of St. Innocent, 1st degree, for his work of the priesthood for the benefit of the Russian Church. “Accepting this award,” the Patriarch said in response, “on behalf of the entire Russian Orthodox Church, which in these years is performing its missionary, educational service, strengthening the faith of Christ in the hearts and souls of people, we will maintain unity, and no one and nothing will separate us, as the Apostle Paul said, from the love of God. " His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II went down in the history of the Church as the first of its Primates, tirelessly undertaking close and distant travels to dioceses, churches and monasteries in his homeland and abroad, where often, as they say, "the foot of an Orthodox bishop has not set foot." And everywhere bishops, clergymen and ordinary believers feel the archpastoral care, spiritual generosity and love of the Primate, from whose attention their difficulties and sorrows do not escape. It is no accident that in recent years the Russian Church has been paying special attention to the revival of Orthodox missionary work, which, alas, is now needed not only by pagans who have not yet been enlightened by the light of the Gospel truth, but also by the majority of the people, who have forgotten their Orthodox roots during the decades of atheistic power. The period of the patriarchate of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II is rightfully called the “new baptism of Rus”.

In the award system of the Russian Orthodox Church, a special place is occupied by the Order of the Holy Blessed Tsarevich Dimitri, the Wonderworker of Moscow and Uglich. It was established on the initiative of the chairman of the Russian Children's Fund, writer Albert Likhanov on September 29, 1997, jointly by the RDF and the Moscow Patriarchate. According to the statute of the order, it is awarded to persons who have made a significant contribution to the care and protection of suffering children: disabled people, orphans and street children. Each presentation is individual in nature, the list of candidates is presented to His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, who decides on the award.

The holy noble Tsarevich Dimitri, who was villainously killed in Uglich on May 15, 1591 (Comm. 15/28 May, 3/16 June), was the youngest son of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. Exiled with his mother as a result of palace intrigues to Uglich, the young tsarevich lived peacefully in this ancient Russian city, until the hand of the assassins sent from Moscow overtook him here too. Tradition accuses Boris Godunov of the crime: it was he, who did not have the right to the throne, who could interfere with the last son of John IV. In a bloody haze of political sinful passions, hunger and devastation, people's love in Time of Troubles brought to life a whole line of ghosts-False Dimitriy. To end the temptation on June 3, 1606, the murdered tsarevich could have been transferred to Moscow, to the Kremlin Assumption Cathedral. Since then, a number of miraculous healings, help in illnesses and misfortunes, especially to children, sent by the Lord in prayer to Saint Demetrius, have not stopped.

The order is a cross with rays of pure silver with gilding, in the middle of which there is an image of Tsarevich Dimitri in the medallion, executed in the enamel technique, surrounded by rubies, with the inscription “For deeds of mercy”. Among the first awardees were the city of Uglich, the temple of Tsarevich Dimitri at the Pervograd hospital in Moscow, as well as a number of figures who worthily served the care of sick and unfortunate children: chairman of the board of the Volgograd branch of the RDF, creator of the "Tenderness" medical center for disabled children R.K. ... Skrynnikova, an Orthodox philanthropist from Switzerland Tamara Simon, who donated 100 thousand dollars for charitable assistance to disabled children, L.S., Gorelygpeva - for 42 years of continuous work as a laundress in an orphanage in the city of Suzdal, M. and T.V.
