The incident itself, which caused a criminal case and a nationwide scandal, occurred on March 31, 2016 in Ulyanovsk. A group of young people gathered in a cottage to celebrate a birthday, after which 16-year-old Diana Shurygina went to the police, accusing 21-year-old student Sergei Semyonov of rape.
There were several controversial points. According to Sergey and his friends, Diana told everyone that she was already 18 years old. The girl herself says that she honestly and openly called her real age.
Both sides admit that they used alcohol, but Diana claims that Sergei used physical force on her and did not respond to requests to stop his actions. According to representatives of the Shurygin family, traces remained on the girl's body, and this is confirmed by the results of the examination, attached to the case.
Some party participants say that the bruise on Diana's face was left by an angry father who came to pick up his daughter from the cottage, but the girl assures that the witnesses began to dramatically change their testimony and point to her father out of mercenary motives.
In addition, Diana said that another young man, Alexander Rukhlin, raped her that night. At first, he was accused in the case, but then he became a witness when the investigators concluded that there was no corpus delicti. He is now serving in the army. On the air "Let them talk" Diana explained this by the fact that he stopped his actions when she asked about it.
In December 2016, the court found Semyonov guilty under two articles of the Criminal Code - 131st ("Rape") and 132nd ("Violent acts of a sexual nature"), and sentenced him to eight years in a maximum security colony. This was the reason for the first wave of interest in this case. After an appeal, the sentence was reduced to three years and three months in a general regime colony.
Sergey Semyonov's support group
Immediately after the verdict in December, a large-scale movement in support of Sergei Semyonov arose on the Internet. His supporters believe that there was no rape, sex was consensual, and Shurygina invented all the charges. Now for the biggest group more than 100 thousand people have signed up to support the guy on VKontakte.
A significant role in this story was played by Ekaterina Semyonova, Sergei's sister. December 12 she posted a post, in which she outlined her version of events and called for attracting as much attention as possible to this story. As Ekaterina said, “during the party, Diana drank a lot of alcoholic drinks and pestered everyone with simple hints about sex,” and then slept with two guys. Sister Semyonova pointed out that Shurygina could hardly have voluntary sexual intercourse immediately after the rape.
She also accused Diana's father, Sergei Shurygin, of allegedly demanding 1 million rubles from the Semyonov family to hush up the case. Another argument of Catherine in favor of the version of Sergei's innocence was Diana's allegedly "riotous lifestyle" as opposed to the exemplary behavior of her brother, as well as charges of rape put forward by Shurygina against another guy some time ago.
Moreover, there is a video and photo showing Diana's cheeky and joyful behavior after the rape, which she herself posted on social networks. It is clearly seen that the victim does not have a depressed state. There are correspondences between Diana and other guys, where she talks about her sexual fantasies and vivid experience of sex life. The family lives in a hostel, has a small income. Semyonov's friend Timur Minibaev created a petition addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, presidential commissioner, courts of general jurisdiction and LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The text is completely identical to the appeal of Sergei's sister; at the time of writing, about 380 thousand people supported the petition.
In groups of Semyonov's supporters, participants collect incriminating information about Shurygina, some believe that she deliberately cheats guys for sex in order to then extort money from them. Sergey's supporters send their photos with words of support. On February 21, a rally was held in Ulyanovsk for his release.
Diana also has support groups, but they are not so numerous: now in the largest of them are 27 thousand people.
"You came in a mini-skirt!"
This story became truly nationwide after the first release of Andrey Malakhov's program “Let Them Talk”, aired on January 31, 2017. Diana and her father came to the studio, despite the fact that almost all the spectators were opposed to them and even the presenter led to Shurygina's guilt.
During the broadcast, Sergei's mother described him as an exemplary young man, even mentioning that he allegedly wanted to become a priest as a child. Diana went into the studio under the disapproving rumble of the audience, they blamed her on a confident look, smiles, although when describing the events of that night, her voice began to clearly tremble.
Another argument against Shurygina was a video where a girl is driving in a car with friends and behaving cheekily in front of the camera. At first, Andrei Malakhov said that it was removed a few days after the rape, but it turned out that several months had passed between these events. During the broadcast, this recording was played several times, and subsequently it became one of the significant arguments of the critics of Shurygina, who argued that the rape victim should behave differently.
The audience attacked Diana with questions, not letting her finish, burst into screaming, laughed at her words, called her an actress, cited stories from their own experience, blamed that the girl “broke the guy’s life”. They criticized her behavior, blamed her parents for poor upbringing and stated that even if the rape did take place, Shurygina herself “provoked” it. During the trial, various petitions in support of Semenov appeared on social networks. The latter's administrators, Angelica Minaeva and Inga Talyshinskaya, told Meduza that the group is helping to draw public attention to the "unfair court decision."
“Thanks to the posts in different groups and the creation of our [group], people began to write to us from different cities, offering assistance, mainly legal. The residents of Ulyanovsk learned about us, they turned to us and told us about Diana. Everything about her has a terrible opinion, which cannot be said about Sergei. Everyone said that she earned money on this: if someone offends her, [she] immediately runs to the police and writes a statement, after which she is simply given money, ”Minaeva said. As an example, she cited the story of Diana's former young man Vlad Troshin, against whom the girl wrote a statement under Article 134 ("Sexual intercourse and other sexual acts with a person under 16 years of age"). The story with Troshin was also confirmed by Diana's lawyer Natalya Glukhova; Vlad Troshin himself could not be contacted.
Semyonov's supporters did not stop at the VK group. His friend Timur Mininbayev also created a petition in support of Semyonov, which will be sent to the court of general jurisdiction, Vladimir Putin, the presidential representative and (for some reason) the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The petition has already been supported by over 50 thousand people.
The administrators of Diana's support group were unable to provide a quick comment, but from the content of the group it is clear that its members are trying to protect Diana from attacks. In both groups, they closely monitor what is happening with their opponents - and often refer (for example, like this) to their records in order to clarify their position.
Semenov's representatives claim that the court delivered an unfair verdict: the sex was by mutual consent, and the abrasions and bruises on Shurygina's body were the result of a conflict with her father, who took her away from the party. The latter is confirmed by some eyewitnesses. Among them is Alexander Rukhlin, who was in the room with Diana after Semyonov left and, according to the latter's sister Yekaterina Semenova, did not see traces of beatings on the girl's body and face. Initially, Rukhlin was also a suspect in the case (according to Shurygina, they had sexual intercourse after Sergei left the room), but the investigation stopped criminal prosecution against him due to the lack of corpus delicti. Now the young man is serving in the army.
According to Shurygina's lawyer Natalya Glukhova, everything was not at all the way Sergei's defenders are trying to present it. She explained that during the preliminary investigation, a biological and genetic examination was carried out. “[Diana ]’s father, of course, didn’t hit. It's out of the question. Semyonov beat her up, ”says Glukhova. The lawyer also said that the Shurygins had the right to appeal against the decision of the preliminary investigation against Alexander Rukhlin, but they did not use it.
To help Sergei Semenov, his family turned to the Let Them Talk program. Diana Shurygina and her father took part in the filming, despite the fact that almost all spectators in the studio were opposed to them. During the program, additional circumstances of the incident became clear: according to Sergei's defenders, Shurygina's father asked the young man's mother for a million rubles to terminate the criminal case; the girl's father himself confirmed this.
Both the program and its announcement show that the authors tend to agree with Semenov's arguments. “In our next program: why did closeness with Diana crossed out his [Semyonov's] future and why did his parents think that their son was the victim of a mercantile, calculating girl?” - says Andrey Malakhov off-screen. On YouTube, the video with the program was called "New Sycheva from Ulyanovsk", which refers to the story of Irina Sycheva - in 2015, a student talked about how she was raped in a club, after which she became the object of harassment on the Internet.
The release of the program provoked the appearance of many fake pages of Shurygina "VKontakte" and memes with her photographs. All of them are based on photos of the girl or screenshots of Let Them Talk. The girl is ridiculed for drinking alcohol, doubts that she was a victim of rape, or is directly blamed for what happened.
“At first it was funny, but now these memes are in every group. It is impossible even to watch the feed on VKontakte or Instagram, everywhere her sly, arrogant face is, "- the administrator of the group in support of the convicted Minaev is indignant. According to her colleague Talyshinskaya, "people are already going too far." Sergei Semenov's sister Ekaterina added that she has nothing to do with the appearance of memes, but does not mind their appearance: “[Shurygina] has long wanted to become famous. According to Natalia Glukhova, now the girl and her parents “feel very bad, after the release of the program, the entire Internet fell upon them. Burger King decided that the raped girl meme was a good advertisement for the new Second Big King free campaign on VKontakte. After the outrage on social networks, the post was deleted.
Most likely, there are several reasons for the demand for such memes. First of all, this is the tradition of victim blaming: the desire to blame not the rapist, but the victim herself. Behind this is an attempt to distance oneself from the victim of violence and from the idea that this can happen to any woman, regardless of her behavior. In this case, the victim “violated” several rules at once: she went out of town to a party with unknown people, she drank, she herself met the rapist. All this, together with the spectacular appearance and atypical image of the victim (on "Let Them Talk", Diana was with elegant styling and noticeable makeup) caused distrust and made her a convenient target for attacks.
Opinions about the story of Diana Shurygina were not just divided: the very reaction to the event turned out to be problematic. On February 20, another episode "Let them talk", dedicated to Diana Shurygina, will be released on Channel One - "In the midst of a party. Continuation "(the record is already on YouTube). This time, the broadcast team interviewed Sergei Semyonov from the colony (he completely denies his guilt and says that meeting with Diana ruined his life), and Diana is supported by her mother (after the first release of the program she was attacked at home, now the family has to constantly move) ... Andrey Malakhov's intonation has changed dramatically: this time he talks much more sympathetically with the heroine of the program, says that she was “raped a second time by social networks”.
Diana cries a lot, she changed her hair (which became a meme); and everyone agrees that now, faced with bullying, she "really suffers." However, in relation to the very rape of Shurygina in the studio, few people still believe. Viewers and experts share their ideas about how a “real” victim of violence should behave and feel (“when my friend was raped, she not only screamed, but jumped from the third floor”). There are calls to draw conclusions: for young people - “that it is not necessary to go into the room with such girls”, and for girls - “if you are invited to the cottage in the evening, it’s not to play chess”.
The court fully admitted the guilt of the failed agronomist Sergei Semyonov, and now he is serving his short term: after the appeal, the young man was given 3 years in a general regime colony (at first he was 8 years old). But Rukhlin, during the investigation, somehow magically turned from a suspect into a witness. I would strongly recommend the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation to pay attention to this mysterious fact. Because in the comments to the 131st article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation it is written that the very fact of introducing ... (well, you know what and where) is already considered sexual intercourse.
By the way, Larisa Mironova, Rukhlin's lawyer, advised me to look into the Criminal Code. In her opinion, Rukhlin had no sexual intercourse with Diana Shurygina.
