Peat tablets. Peat tablets for seedlings: how to choose and how to use Peat tablets for seedlings description

Planting tomatoes in peat tablets is a great way to grow seedlings without picking them up. Sprouts transplanted without damaging the root system begin to bear fruit 1-2 weeks earlier than usual.

Peat washers are a ready-made soil substrate with a balanced content of nutrients. They appeared in our country relatively recently, but have already gained considerable popularity among gardeners and summer residents due to their convenience and ease of use. In addition, with this method of cultivation, the survival rate of plants is high.

Benefits of peat tablets

The peat pellet is a gray-black disc of pressed peat of various sizes: from 2 to 7 cm in diameter and 1-1.5 cm in height.

In addition to peat, it can contain additional nutrients necessary for seed germination and active growth of shoots in the first weeks of growing, as well as fungicides and antibacterial drugs. For planting tomatoes, peppers or eggplant tablets, you can choose the appropriate size and filling.

Peat is used either for riding or for composition. Peat discs are packed in a protective net or foil that can decompose in the soil. Protection is necessary in order to maintain their shape when soaked. Therefore, after contact with water, pelleted peat increases in height, but in width remains unchanged.

Growing tomato seedlings in peat tablets saves gardeners and gardeners from unnecessary trouble. The method allows you to save space in a greenhouse, greenhouse or on a windowsill. In addition, this method of germinating seedlings has other advantages:

  1. Due to the friability of peat, it is gentle on delicate roots.
  2. A high percentage of germination and survival of plants allows you to get seedlings from expensive or rare seed material without loss.
  3. Tablet soil absorbs a limited amount of moisture, so in such a substrate you just need to maintain optimal moisture content.
  4. Peat itself is organic fertilizer, therefore, at the initial stage of germination, there is no need for additional fertilizing.
  5. The porosity of the substrate ensures good aeration of the plant root system and protects it from decay.
  6. The sprouts are transplanted into open ground together with a tablet, which facilitates the process and allows you to preserve the roots of the shoots.
  7. The use of a peat substrate protects the plant from damage by diseases such as black leg.
  8. The use of a tablet form allows you to group seedlings depending on the stage of development.
  9. A large selection of sizes allows you to choose the optimal one for each crop. So, for growing tomatoes, peppers and eggplant in tablets, products 3.5-5 cm in diameter are suitable.
  10. The tabletted substrate in dry form is stored without loss of quality for many years.

There are no restrictions on the use of this substrate. This method is especially good for thermophilic and poorly emerging varieties.

At the same time, the cultivation technology differs little from traditional methods. It is important not to allow the peat to dry out. The main disadvantage of tablets is their cost. Growing large numbers of seedlings in this way may not be cost effective.

How to choose the right one?

Since tomatoes are large plants with a rather long growing season, they require tablets of a sufficiently large diameter (at least 3.5 cm). You can combine peat pots and tablets. In this case, you can use only half of the disc or, if the plant has grown quite large, place the tablet in a large-diameter pot.

When choosing pots and tablets from peat, it is important to pay attention to the structure of the peat mixture. It should be fairly loose, fine and soft. This contributes to better aeration of the root system and water absorption of the tablet itself.

An important factor is the acidity of the substrate. This indicator is often indicated on the packaging, since different crops require a different reaction of the environment. Since tomatoes prefer neutral soils, and grow poorly on acidic soils, the soil for them should have a pH of 6-6.5.

The optimal size of tablets for tomatoes is 3.6-4 cm. After swelling, their height will increase from 1.5 to 36 and 38 cm, respectively. The tabletted substrate should be sufficient big size, so that its volume is sufficient until the end of the cultivation of seedlings.

It is important that the discs have a protective sleeve. This can be mesh, film or paper impregnated with fungicides or other substances. Although uncoated tablets are cheaper, they cannot be kept in shape and must be placed in a pot. Together, pots and pills are even more expensive.

There are different ways of growing seedlings. Based on this, you can choose tablets placed in miniature greenhouses with a different number of washers or without them, in packages.

You can buy peat washers at special stores, hypermarkets or on the Internet.

How to use?

Tomatoes in peat tablets are grown different ways- in mini greenhouses, pallets, cassettes.

Washers must be prepared before sowing seeds. First of all, they are saturated with water. To do this, the tablets are soaked in a container with warm water for 15-20 minutes. During this time, they will increase in height by 5-8 times, and the diameter will remain the same.

Several crystals of potassium permanganate can be added to the water for additional disinfection and enrichment with potassium substrate. The substrate is then placed on a flat surface with the opening facing up.

To place the tablets in advance, you must prepare a mini-greenhouse or container with or without a transparent lid. The cover helps to preserve moisture and the required temperature in the peat before germination.

The tablets are stacked in such a way that there is no free space between them. This will ensure the sustainability of both themselves and future seedlings. You can put each washer in a separate container. In a separate cup, the seedlings are more mobile - they are easier to transport and move if necessary.

In addition, tall cups are used to grow seedlings of tall varieties of tomatoes. In this case, uncoated tablets can be used. A sponge-like material can be placed at the bottom of the pan to help control the moisture content of the substrate.

The container should be high enough (about 10 cm high) so that the swollen washers and sprout are held securely. You can put the tablets in special cassettes with individual cups of at least 0.5 ml. In such a container, the seedlings will be securely fixed.

Planting seeds in a tablet

There are a few simple rules on how to use and how to use peat tablets for seedlings.

The seeds must first be prepared. This can be done in different ways:

  1. The seed is soaked for 1-2 days in a mixture of agave juice and water in a 1: 1 ratio. This will increase the resistance of seedlings to adverse environmental conditions and many diseases, and increase productivity.
  2. The seed is soaked for 24 hours in a 0.5% solution baking soda... This promotes early fruiting.
  3. The seeds are soaked for 2 hours in water with the addition of stimulants to accelerate germination.
  4. Seed material can be placed for 20 minutes in a low-borne potassium permanganate solution. Seeds are pre-wrapped in gauze or bandage.

1-2 seeds are placed in each tablet and deepened with a toothpick by 1.5 cm. After placing in the substrate, the coated seeds are additionally moistened with a pipette, and the shell is smeared with a toothpick to facilitate germination.

Cover with a lid or foil on top. Tomatoes sown in this way quickly develop a root system that is strong and well-branched.

Optimal conditions for growing seedlings

Seeds sprout 5-10 days after they are sown, tomatoes need to be sown 55-65 days before planting in open ground. Depending on the region, this could be the end of February or the beginning of March. The container with the tablets is placed in a bright, warm place. An east and west window will work well. Optimum temperature for seedlings + 25 ... + 30 ºС.

Caring for seedlings consists in regular watering, feeding, airing and lighting. It is necessary to regularly open the container for ventilation - at least once a day for 60 minutes.

A sign that the plants need ventilation is the appearance of condensation on the lid. After pecking the seedlings, the cover is removed altogether. If the windowsill is cold, the greenhouse is placed on a thick foam layer and closed from drafts.

Seedling maintenance includes providing good lighting. If there is not enough natural light, phytolamps can be installed. The first 2-3 days after the appearance of the loops, the seedlings are illuminated around the clock, and then they switch to 16-hour daylight hours.

Top dressing is applied 2-3 weeks after the emergence of sprouts, dissolving the fertilizer in water for irrigation. Until that time, the pill has enough of its own nutrients. And since that time, fertilizers are applied every 10-14 days.

To do this, you can use a nitrophosphate (1 tbsp. L. Per 10 l of water), pouring 0.5 cups of solution under each plant. Mineral fertilizers alternate with organic ones. 10 days before planting in the ground, seedlings are watered with superphosphate.

With this method of growing, seedlings do not need a pick, but if necessary, each tablet can be placed in a separate container with a larger volume. If both seeds germinate, one of the weaker sprouts is removed.

Rules for watering peat tablets

When growing tomatoes in peat tablets, constantly monitor the moisture. It is easier to do this before germination thanks to the lid. Features of growing seedlings in the future are constant moisture. Even a short-term drying out of the substrate leads to the death of crops.

The container with the tablets must have drainage holes. It is placed in a special tray. Planted tomatoes can be watered in 2 ways: through the pallet or by spraying. Before the emergence of seedlings, it is better to moisturize the substrate with an aerosol. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the small sprouts.

After germination, it is more convenient to water the seedlings through a pallet, where water is poured. Loose peat, due to its capillary structure and high water permeability, absorbs as much moisture as needed. The excess water must be drained. Adult seedlings can be sprayed 1-2 times a day.

Growing seedlings in large quantities has its own characteristics. In this case, drip irrigation is practiced.

First achievements

After emergence, you need to monitor the roots. After the appearance of the root from the bottom of the tablet, it is pruned. The washer itself is notched in 2-4 places and placed in a larger container or seedlings are planted in open ground.

If the plants develop unevenly, the tableted substrate is interchanged or transferred to more appropriate place... For example, ready-made plants are taken out into the open air for hardening.

Flower brushes appear in the sprouts 1.5 months after the emergence of shoots. 10 days after that, they are planted in open ground. The first flower brush can be removed by stitching off the transplant for a week.

Good quality seedlings should have thick stems, large leaves and a well-developed root system.

Secrets of experienced summer residents

A common mistake of gardeners is growing seedlings on an incorrectly composed substrate. The use of pelleted peat eliminates this problem. Washers are convenient to use when growing seedlings both for open ground and for greenhouses.

In order for the seedlings to develop before planting, they must be sown no later than March 25th. Before immersion in the substrate, seeds are kept on wet gauze for 5 days to accelerate germination. Another secret - after the emergence of seedlings, you need to lower the temperature to +16 ºС for hardening.

Some gardeners remove the protective coating from the tablets. It is not necessary to do this, since the planted tomatoes are able to penetrate the roots through the shell.

Video: how to use peat tablets

On the Internet, you can find videos of master classes on growing seedlings of tomatoes and other vegetable crops using peat washers with all the secrets and features.

Every spring, any gardener is faced with the task of preparing seed containers for seedlings. In this article, I would like to draw your attention to the features of the use, advantages and disadvantages of peat tablets for seedlings.

They have been on sale for several years, but not every summer resident knows how to use them to get strong and healthy seedlings. I will try to fill in all the necessary gaps and talk about my experience with peat tablets.

Peat seedling tablets - let's take a closer look

The tablets come in different diameters, which allows you to expel seedlings of any size. It is best to grow cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons, peppers, tomatoes, eggplants in them.

The composition of peat tablets for seedlings, in addition to the peat-containing substrate, includes growth stimulants, mineral fertilizers, antibacterial ingredients. Plants feel great in them - they grow quickly, form a powerful root system and rarely get sick.

Instructions for use

Transfer of seedlings from a peat pellet to a larger container

Before use peat tablets are soaked for 15-30 minutes in water with the addition of any developmental stimulant of your choice (but you can do without it). The synthetic mesh protects the tablet from disintegration and does not need to be removed. A small hole is formed in the center, into which the hatched or dry seeds should be placed.

Next, the tablets are placed in cells or on a pallet. For this purpose, you can also use a plastic cake box or salad tray, which you can purchase at the point of sale of disposable tableware. So, in a container measuring 20 x 30, about 25 pieces of small tablets are placed.

A container with tablets is placed on the windowsill, covered with a transparent lid and about half a centimeter of water is poured onto the bottom, which is quickly absorbed. As soon as shoots appear, the cover is removed.

Further care consists in maintaining the optimum moisture content of the tablets - regularly add water with the addition of a micro dose to the bottom of the container.

If the roots of the plants have sprouted through the tablets, this means that it is time to plant them in open ground, or to prepare for transshipment.

Transhipment of seedlings is done as follows:

  1. To the bottom plastic cup suitable size- optimally from half a liter - the soil is poured so that after backfilling the stem of the seedling is slightly buried in the soil mixture.
  2. A tablet is placed in the center.
  3. Next, the prepared soil is poured between the walls of the cup and the tablet to its upper level.
  4. The transplanted plants are watered with a standing tablespoon or. As it develops, you should pour the soil into a glass and do not forget to water it sparingly.

Pros and cons of peat seedling tablets

So, after considering the technology of growing seedlings in peat tablets, its advantages and disadvantages become obvious.

PROS:

  • there is no need to bother with preparing soil for seedlings;
  • seedling gets balanced diet thanks to the enriched substrate of the tablets - if you wish, you can even do without top dressing;
  • during transshipment and planting in open ground, the roots of plants are not damaged, which avoids a delay in development;
  • the seedling tray is compact and holds many tablets, which saves space on the windowsill.

MINUSES:

  • you need to closely monitor the moisture content of the tablets, since peat has a tendency to dry out quickly;
  • peat tablets for seedlings are an expensive pleasure for the average summer resident, given their disposability.

To be honest, I have not yet experienced this method, as it is expensive for me. In addition, in the spring it gives me pleasure to tinker with seedling soil. Although, according to the reports of friends, plants in peat tablets grow stronger and easier to tolerate a transplant.

If peat pills for seedlings are not sold in your city, then they can be ordered via the Internet here. Try next spring to plant part of the seedlings in them, and part - to grow traditional method... Then you can form your own opinion about their effectiveness.

Where else can you plant seedlings? Determining the choice will also help you.

Every spring, any gardener - a lover of self-cultivation of seedlings, is faced with a choice - what to plant seeds in? Someone uses kefir bags, someone uses baby food cups, and someone constructs these cups from old newspapers. We want to tell you about a relatively new way of growing home seedlings - in peat tablets. Whoever has tried them in practice at least once cannot do without them now. They are gradually replacing even peat pots, which were so popular in the recent past.

Peat tablets are almost ready-made humus, which includes rotted mosses and other marsh plants with a full composition of natural fertilizers. Various nutritional, mineral and antibacterial additives, growth stimulants and fungicides are also added there. The compressed washer is placed in a special mesh that prevents the peat lump from falling apart when growing seedlings and will prevent many plant diseases, as it is saturated with fungicide.

A peat washer is very similar to a large pill - hence its name. The acidity of the peat in the tablet is ideal for most plants and is indicated on the package (pH 5.4 to 6.2). Dry tablets do not have an expiration date. They are produced in different diameters - from 2.5 to 9 cm.The thickness ranges from 8 mm to 3 cm.More often, peat tablets of 4 cm are used - the most convenient size for both grafting seedlings and germinating seeds. It is better to germinate small seeds in small-diameter tablets, 2-3 cm, but to obtain strong healthy seedlings of vegetable crops, a larger tablet, up to 7 cm in diameter, is better suited. Because the larger the tablet, the more nutrients it contains.

Using peat tablets

First, we will prepare containers, preferably with a lid, in which we will germinate the seeds. Use salad trays or plastic cake boxes. Now on sale you can find special containers for growing seedlings in peat tablets. A 20 cm by 30 cm container will hold over 20 medium peat tablets.

Container with lid

We will place our peat washers in the prepared container. Determine where they are up - there should be a slight indentation. Place the peat closer to each other - when swelling, the cylinders do not increase in diameter, they grow in height. Pour a small amount of warm water on the bottom of the container with tablets so that our dry tablets do not float, and wait a little. Literally before our very eyes, the pills will begin to swell and grow. If there is not enough water to completely saturate the entire cylinder, add it. The tablets should be 7 times their original height. The mesh fixes the shape and size of the cylinders and prevents them from falling apart.

Sometimes on sale there are peat tablets without a grid - such peat must be placed immediately in the appropriate size cups, individually.

In less than half an hour, our tablets are ready to use. Excess water must be drained. We will see that a small depression has formed in the center of the tablet - this is the place to place the seed. If you want to root cuttings in a tablet, you need to widen the grooves a little yourself.

Planting seeds

Small seeds are placed in the center of the tablet with a match or toothpick. The seeds are planted dry or sprouted, then using the same toothpick, the hole in the center of the tablet must be deepened, and the root sprinkled with the same peat. Seeds purchased in the form of dragees, after moistening and softening the shell, must be gently smeared along the bottom of the groove for better germination. The looseness and lightness of the peat substrate will provide the roots with good water permeability and air exchange.

The container with the seeds planted in tablets is closed with a transparent lid and placed on a light windowsill. It is necessary to ensure that the optimum humidity is maintained in the container so that the substrate does not dry out, add room temperature water to the bottom as needed. The containers are ventilated from time to time. If the sprouts are not yet visible, you can use a spray bottle.

When shoots appear, the cover is gradually removed completely. When the seedlings have grown enough, so that the roots of the plant begin to sprout through the mesh of the tablet, it must either be planted in open ground or in a new, more spacious container.

Roots make their way through the mesh

If your seedlings have a fragile root system, it may be difficult for them to cope with germination through the mesh. It is better if you help her - gently tear the mesh before transplanting.

Pros and cons of growing seedlings in peat tablets

  1. There are no restrictions on their use.
  2. They are simply indispensable for the germination of small seeds such as petunia, lobelia. The nutritional composition of the tablets guarantees a high percentage of germination and healthy development of the plant.
  3. To fully guarantee their germination, expensive and rare granular seeds of flowering plants should be germinated in peat, in addition, they will provide them with full complex nutrition and protection from diseases.
  4. For crops that do not tolerate picking and transplanting (for example, perennial poppies, gypsophila or escholzia), growing in tablets will guarantee one hundred percent further rooting in the garden.
  5. Cuttings of stem and leaf crops take root well in tablets. For example, a violet leaf. The stalk in a tablet is placed in a suitable glass under the film for 2-3 weeks, until the root system appears.
  6. When transferring seedlings to open ground, the roots are not damaged, which means that there will be no delay in the development of the plant.
  7. Seedling containers take up little space on the windowsill, although they can hold many tablets at once.
  8. The work on the preparation and preparation of pre-planting soil is reduced to a minimum, which is especially important in an apartment.
  9. There is no need to feed the seedlings while it is in the tablet - all the nutrients are in abundance there.
  10. The roots of the plant do not rot, because the moisture of the peat cylinder is controlled in a natural way - it does not absorb excess water. The plant is not threatened with a disease such as a black leg.
  11. Peat tablets have no expiration date. The ones you didn't use this year will come in handy next year.

  1. It is necessary to constantly monitor the humidity in the container. Peat tablets dry out quickly, you need to add warm or room water.
  2. The pills are not cheap. Their use on a large scale is not economically viable.

As you can see from the above, there are much more advantages in growing seedlings in peat tablets than disadvantages. And the benefits are colossal. The peat tablet was created to simplify human labor as much as possible, to make it less laborious, but fruitful.

A large selection is presented for convenient cultivation and easy care of crops using various soils, fertilizers and everything that is so necessary to achieve high harvest, but peat tablets are also of interest among the selection. All those gardeners who have already used peat washers at least once now cannot do without them.

The development of the novelty is presented for the application of novices or professionals. Its direct purpose was to grow plants, germinate green seeds and root cuttings. Sometimes such pressed briquettes are used for indoor plant maintenance as the main soil. Peat is almost ready-made humus, consisting of rotted mosses and other marsh plants with a full composition of fertilizers laid down by nature. They began to be produced not so long ago, but have already established themselves in the market.

Peat washers include a dry compound pressed together with antibacterial additives, a growth promoter and mineral fertilizers. In its shape, the products are similar to a flattened circle or tablet, from which this name later appeared. The pressed composition is packed in a special mesh, which will not allow it to crumble during use. Some gardeners remove the net for better development of the seedling root system, but in fact it does not interfere at all, and the roots grow well through the net.

The composition of the tablet is selected in the best way so that the seeds germinate and the plants feel comfortable.

  1. Peat-peat mixture nourishes the plant.
  2. Antibacterial substances inhibit the development of fungi and mold.
  3. Mineral additives accelerate the growth of seedlings.

What are the sizes of peat and how to choose?

They are produced in various diameters from 24 mm. up to 90mm, and their thickness reaches from 8mm. up to 30mm. Peat made in 33mm diameter is suitable for large and small seeds. Root crops, growing in a washer, need further and final transplantation into street soil. This method is good in that it does not require further thinning or picking with a minimum of non-germinated seeds than when sowing directly into open ground. The time of sowing and planting of sprouted root crops in open ground should be taken into account, and this is not earlier than the beginning of May. A tablet with a diameter of 41 or 44 mm is suitable for vegetable plants that are planted in open ground by adults like peppers and tomatoes, eggplants and cucumbers or others. The nutrient-rich soil will help plants germinate and grow quickly.

There is no special care, but only regular watering of the seedlings is required.

  1. It should be taken into account that the smaller the diameter of the tablet, the less the supply of nutrients for the development of the plant, therefore it will be necessary to feed the plant.
  2. The diameter of the tablet should be chosen from the seed of the plant and its type. Large peppers and other vegetables are suitable, while smaller volumes are suitable for petunias.
  3. The best choice of tablets will be with a mesh, they will not only hold the mixture after soaking with water, but also prevent some plant diseases. it is impregnated with fungicides. With a lower cost, a tablet without such a shell, after preparation for sowing, will turn into a lump, therefore this option requires a container for its size.
  4. When choosing and buying peat tablets, you should pay attention to their structure. Some of the manufacturers fill the washers with a too coarse peat mixture, and such a structure will have little air permeability and therefore, plant roots will develop poorly.

For the manufacture of tablets, the manufacturer uses peat of different fractions and acidity, which must be indicated on the packaging. It is necessary to clarify the desired environment for cuttings or plant seeds, which soil is preferably acidic or slightly acidic for them. If you do not pay attention to this, then, as a result, ornamental crops, for example, in acidic peat, will greatly slow down their growth and development, up to the death of seeds or seedlings. Therefore, you should not buy tablets in bulk without proper information about the composition, and in order to obtain an effective result, tablets should be purchased with packaging and all the specified characteristics on it.

How to use peat?

There is a small indentation in the center of each washer and it is the exact place for the seed. The lightness and friability of the substrate provides the roots with air exchange and water permeability. The development of crops is provided by additives in the form of mineral fertilizers.

For sowing, peat is first prepared, they are placed in a recessed box or other container, for example, disposable glasses. Next, pour a small amount of lukewarm water or room temperature in a container with peat, getting water when watering on each tablet. Leave everything for a while, and after that it will be possible to see how much the peat has increased literally 7 times. The mesh fixes the shape in the swollen and compressed state. After half an hour, they will take the shape of an elongated cylinder and reach their size, and at the end of the transformation procedure, the remaining water should be drained from the container.

Peat can be placed in each individual and suitable container, and if there are mini-greenhouses, then this will be perfect option for plants. Russian manufacturers do not always use a mesh to support the forming, then the container will definitely come in handy.

The peat contains all the necessary substances for the proper development of the plant, so additional feeding of the seedlings will be needed only after two weeks when two true leaves will grow.

It is worth trying as a mini - greenhouse containers in which confectionery products, pastries or cakes are sold. The containers are transparent and perfectly transmitting light with a tight-fitting lid, which will provide a greenhouse microclimate for plants. You can place peat washers as conveniently or in several ways:

  1. In rows in the beds, one after the other, or close to each other in a pallet or other container.
  2. In special cassettes for growing crops.
  3. With the use of low boxes with spilled sand.
  4. In a greenhouse with light transmission and openings for air flow.
  5. For preventive purposes against the disease of crops, potassium permanganate is added to the water for soaking peat, bringing the solution to color pink... They also use melted or settled water for at least one day.
  6. One or two seeds of crops are settled with a toothpick into a special depression of wet peat and after that we place the container in a warm place or simply cover the surface of the container with cling film. Do not water because the soil is already saturated with moisture.
  7. Sprouted seeds can be planted in peat, and grown seedlings from total capacity with plants.

The embedding of the seed during sowing should not exceed the seed size by more than two times, this rule will help to plant the seeds correctly.

When the seeds have sprouted unsuccessfully and the grown ones need to be taken out for hardening, then with tablets such measures are easy to implement, and the belated plants should be given the opportunity to germinate in the warmth. Sprouted seeds require more frequent ventilation, and cultivation is carried out according to the requirements of each specific type of crop.

Seedling care in peat tablets

The care of seedlings consists in ensuring that the substrate does not dry out and the seedlings do not die if they are without a greenhouse. Especially on sunny days, you should follow the soil, it tends to dry out completely faster than usual. Moisten crops, possibly in simple ways:

  1. Spray peat from a spray bottle if the sprouts are still invisible or the seedlings have not matured.
  2. It is very convenient to grow those species that do not tolerate transplanting or too small crop seeds and they are sown on the surface. In order not to damage picky plants, even by watering, it is convenient to use a tray, pouring water into it, thereby moistening the substrate.

If the plant has a delicate and fragile root system, and it has difficulty in germinating through an obstacle, then you should help the plant and break through a little mesh on its own.

When the weather settles and the seedlings are grown enough, it's time to plant them in the beds. It will be easy and quick to plant seedlings together with a cylinder, and the mesh, after falling into the ground, will dissolve there completely after a while.

Peat benefits

These tablets do not have an expiration date, so what is left can be stored for as long as you want. During storage, do not allow moisture or high humidity up to 40-60% and no more, and temperature regime within 0-15 degrees.

Disadvantages of pills

  1. It is necessary to monitor the state of peat for moisture, because it tends to dry quickly.
  2. It is necessary to use pallets or cups, pots or other containers for convenient plant care.
  3. When buying a washer for a high price with the need to purchase them in large quantities, the amount will be noticeable.

There is no doubt that the benefits of using pills are much greater, and the benefits from it are colossal. You should not save on quantity, because one tablet is designed for one plant and after germination of the seed there is no need to transplant it with the correct size. The peat tablet is created for the gardener to facilitate and simplify work as much as possible, making it fruitful.

Applying peat when planting seedlings will be the best of all cultivation methods with guaranteed seed germination and excellent survival rate. The main observance of the rule for achieving one hundred percent of the result will be the timely watering of the seed and plants located in a light planting mixture. Excellent growth of crops on peat, will allow for short lines to get a developed and healthy type of crop, which will be guaranteed to bloom and yield earlier in time than others that have been sprouted and grown in the usual, seedling way.

It so happened that in the families of gardeners and gardeners during the winter they prepare containers for seedlings. Containers of various sizes and strengths are used: yogurt cups, juice and dairy products boxes, homemade paper or cardboard bags. Do not throw away and plastic pallets from semi-finished products - they can be sown loosely.

Peat seedling tablets - how to use

However, this seemingly savings does not cut costs at all. The container requires thorough washing (water consumption and detergents). Even when the smallest boxes are collected, the containers still turn out to be quite voluminous, they require a lot of land. Yes, and several copies are planted in them, which, when transplanted, leads to the loss of a certain part of the seedlings. The substrate has to be purchased in large quantities in the store or prepared by yourself.

At the end of winter, the primary germination of seeds takes place in urban apartments or rural houses, and not in greenhouses or in a vegetable garden. This fact imposes certain requirements on the soil in which seeds germinate and seedlings grow stronger. Substrate sold on the market usually undergoes pre-sale disinfection, which does not have the best effect on its quality.

If you prepare the earth yourself, then you need to disinfect it - steaming in the oven or microwave. This procedure increases the household's electricity consumption - large volumes are disinfected at full oven power in small portions.

Important! After such treatment, no bacteria remain in the ground - neither harmful to the development of plants, nor beneficial to them. In addition, the sanitary conditions in the house where the planting is carried out leave much to be desired.

Sowing optimization

Many summer residents and owners of personal plots solve this problem by purchasing special seedling cups with pallets and industrially harvested land. This leads to additional costs, but saves nerves and energy.

They sell different containers for seedlings. The preferences of plant lovers are also not the same: someone uses reusable cups with a retractable bottom, and someone annually buys peat pots that decompose in the soil. Each type of container has its own advantages and disadvantages.

A separate type of container for seedlings is a peat tablet.

Description and characteristics

A peat pellet is a washer of compressed peat, small in diameter and height. Before the production of this type of container, peat is enriched with microelements useful for seed germination and seedling development. Each tablet is enclosed in a thin natural mesh, and on top, where the peat is not coated, it has a small depression.

Under the influence of moisture, in which the tablets are placed, or poured from above, the peat swells. Only the height of the container is increased - tablets are created by pressing horizontal volumes of peat and with dehydration. The change in height occurs 5 - 7 times.

The indentation in the center is for seeds; it does not level out when soaked. After being saturated with moisture, a peat tablet becomes an almost ideal medium for growing seedlings.

Beneficial features

Peat tablet relieves gardeners and gardeners of many preparatory work and has a number of advantages over other containers.

More specifically, the peat tablet:

  • saves time - you do not have to buy or collect land for seedlings, make paper containers (this is both a container and its filling);
  • saves space in the dwelling - there is no need for harvesting and storage of containers in winter, space for the harvested soil is not needed;
  • saves space on the windowsill - the optimally selected tablet size will allow you to place it under a lamp or on the sunny side more plants than when grown in random containers;
  • ensures friendly germination and optimal composition for feeding seedlings (peat is filled with nutrients during production);

  • prevents diseases of young plants; peat itself is an antiseptic substance, viruses and fungi do not live in it, therefore, black leg and other rot in plants do not develop;
  • ensures the development of strong seedlings and adult plants - as the seedlings grow, they do not need a pick (removing a young shoot from the ground with further transplanting into a larger container), since the containers are simply placed in another container or in a garden bed;
  • keeps the room clean - a peat tablet does not require filling with a loose substrate, does not need disinfection and feeding, which ensures the maintenance of sanitary and hygienic conditions in the house.
  • As a 3-in-1 item (container, substrate, nutrients), the peat tablet is a versatile medium for growing seedlings and rooting plant cuttings. The only condition is the presence of water - the substrate is moisture-consuming, but dries up quickly enough. It is necessary to ensure timely moistening of the soil.

Such properties of a peat tablet practically exclude damage to young plants before and during their transfer to open ground or a greenhouse. Intact roots do not waste time and energy on restoration, the culture grows continuously.

Peat seedling tablets - how to use? Step-by-step instruction

So, having weighed all the pros and cons and choosing the time of sowing, you should proceed according to the algorithm below.

Step 1. Determination of the scale of purchases of containers for seedlings. Depending on which plants are planned to be grown, the diameter of the peat tablets is determined. The number of units of each culture determines how many tablets of a particular diameter should be purchased.

Step 2. Purchase of the required number of planting containers.

Step 3. Purchase and preparation of seeds. This procedure includes testing for germination by soaking in a mild saline solution with the subsequent drying of full-weight seeds and rejection of the emerging ones. The next stage is germination. Carry out as desired - the seeds are placed in a damp cloth or cotton pads and wait for pecking.

Germination is organized as follows: the seeds are laid out on layered cotton pads (so that the layer of wet cotton is thinner)

Step 4. Preparation of containers for sowing seeds - soaking peat tablets in waterproof pallets until they are completely saturated with water and increase the height by 5-7 times. Elimination of excess moisture.

This is what pills swollen from moisture look like.

Step 5. Sowing seeds. Large seeds are placed in a depression and sprinkled with sand or vermiculite (a minimum amount is required). The same is done with pelleted seeds.

Small seeds are placed one at a time in smaller containers. To do this, you can use a toothpick, since the procedure is carried out with your fingers for a long time and with the loss of seeds. In most cases, small seeds do not fall on top and grow on the surface.

Step 6. Seedling marking. Each group of plants must be designated as they are planted. To do this, you can use plastic stickers stuck into the ground, or improvised means - you can write on them with a marker or pen. These labels indicate the plant, variety, planting date. As you grow, you can add other data - the date of germination, transplantation, the beginning of fruiting. But this is optional information, they are indicated if a database is being collected about a particular plant (for example, a newcomer to the collection).

Step 7. Placement of the pallet with peat tablets on the windowsill. They choose the brightest place, since the seedlings need a lot of light. With its lack and a large amount of nutrients (and there are enough of them in the tablet), the seedlings can stretch out and weaken.

Step 8. Covering crops with a transparent cover or foil. This procedure keeps the soil moist and maintains the desired temperature. It is necessary to remove the lid several times every day for 10-30 minutes, airing the mini-greenhouse. This will prevent excessive heating of the substrate and provide air exchange.

Step 9. Final removal of the cover at emergence. Young plants are placed in a cooler but still lighter place. They are grown in the same way as ordinary seedlings.

Step 10. Increased capacity. If more space is needed, the peat pellet is simply placed in a larger pot. If necessary, you can deepen the plant (for example) or leave it at the same ground level (pepper). The plant will continue to grow without problems.

Important! The mesh tissue does not decompose quickly, but it also does not interfere with the spread of the roots outside the tablet. Therefore, there is no need to remove the mesh when replanting. When trying to remove it, damage to the fragile roots is inevitable.

After using the peat tablet, it is not required to process the planting tank. At the end of the season, after harvesting, it is possible to find remnants of a fabric mesh in the ground, which can be removed from the site or dug up with the rest of the soil.

Until next spring, the pantries in the house will not be cluttered with all kinds of containers. Households are once and for all exempt from the constant collection and washing of items that can be used to grow seedlings. Just on the eve of spring, you should visit a summer cottage store and purchase a sufficient amount of peat tablets.

Seedlings are pulled up - what to do?

To combat the pulling out of seedlings, you need to understand the causes of the phenomenon and its features for specific cultivated species. For more detailed information on the problem, we advise you to read.

So, the choice of the method of growing seedlings remains with the gardeners. Many have already tried this advanced plant cultivation method. Someone liked it, and the method took root in the family. Someone else is in doubt - the habit does not immediately release. And someone has not been able to understand the benefits of a peat tablet. This is not to say that this is the only possible way, but it is worth trying. At least in order to have your own, based on personal experience, opinion.
