Electronic photo formats. Photo file formats

Greetings to my blog again. With you in touch, Timur Mustaev. It is possible that everyone had to deal with such a situation: you photographed, the picture on the screen looked clear and high-quality.

After that, you went to the salon and printed it, and it looked at all as it was on the monitor screen and had a large number of digital noise. What is the problem? Today I will tell you about this problem and what are the formats of photos. We will proceed to study.

Basic terms for understanding the topic

Pixels - small square dots, painted in a certain light that make up a single whole - an image.

When you look at the photo, the eye does not notice the specific points of the raster, since they are very small and the amount of them can reach tens of thousands, they merge, forming one picture. Only with the increase you can see them.

There is a feature: the number of raster points is higher, the more parts are drawn and the photograph is better.

Linear size - These are data on the width and height of the printed snapshot, expressed in millimeters. They can be found with the help of a regular line. For example, a linear picture value with parameters 10 * 15 cm -102 * 152 mm.

Parameters in pixels - This is data on the width and height of the digital picture.

There is one feature. Digital cameras make pictures of some sizes: 640 * 480, 1600 * 1200, and on the monitor we see 800 * 600,1024 * 768,1280 * 1024. That is a significant misconception.

Consider examples. If the picture has a value of 450 × 300 raster points, the snapshot will be rotated under the album, that is, it is horizontal. What does it depend on? A picture width is greater than height.

If you take the size of 300 * 450 pictures, it will be located in the book orientation, that is, vertically. Why so? Width less than height.

Resolution - the number that binds among themselves the magnitudes in millimeters and in pixels measured in dPI (from the English. "Dots Per Inch" - the number of dots per inch).

Specialists advise to put permission - 300 dpi, designed to obtain high-quality photographs. Minimum resolution - 150 DPI.

The higher the indicator, the better the photo.

But, it is worth noting that if you make a photograph of a large original, that is, "stretch the raster points", then the quality falls.

The resolution may vary depending on the different models of the camera. What is the secret? Photographic manufacturers indicate the inaccurate number of megapixels, for example, 12 mp. In fact, it may be 12.3 or 12.5 mp. But the print quality does not deteriorate from this fact.

Standard dimensions

What are the formats of photos? Find out.

  1. The most popular print size is 10 * 15 cm. It is used to form a family archive.
  2. Next - 15 * 20 cm or A5.
  3. A4, 20 * 30 cm or 21 * 29.7 cm. Apply for wall decoration by photos. Since A4 is the size of office paper for printing, the printout will not be difficult, since mostly printers are designed for the manufacture of A4.
  4. 30 * 40 cm - complex format. It has two other names: A3 or A3 +. Why complicated? Because there is a confusion. The size A3 has parameters 297 * 420 mm, but it is impossible to choose such photoframes, they are not on sale. The closest photo frame to this photograph is 30 * 40 cm. Be careful when ordering. Photo frames are made with glass.

Non-standard sizes

Often we have to order a photo not standard value, but unique - non-standard.

  1. 13 * 18 cm. It is urgent rarely. Printing is difficult.
  2. 40 * 50 cm or 30 * 40 cm. Pictures with these parameters will help to decorate the interior, because quite large. Therefore, the quality should be high.

How to calculate dimensions for high resolution

Let us consider in detail the photos with parameters 10 * 15 cm.

  • Linear values \u200b\u200bof these parameters (specified usually in special tables) - 102 * 152 mm.
  • Multiply the width of the image (102 mm) for the resolution we want to achieve, in our case it is 300 DPI.
  • We split the result of the last step by the number of mm in one inches - 25.4.
  • We obtain the number of raster points of the original picture in width 102 * 300 / 25.4 \u003d 1205.

The same algorithm will spend for height.

152*300/25,4 = 1795.

So, we conclude, for any photograph, the value of which will be greater than 1205 * 1795 raster points, when printing on a 10 * 15 cm format, the resolution will be more than 300 units.

Sometimes it turns out that images with permissions 150 and 300 units look completely equally. Why and why depends? Depends on the genre of the picture and the distance from which they will be considered.

Documentation

Document formats are measured in cm!

  • For different types of certificates - 3 * 4 cm;
  • For visas - 3.5 * 4.5 cm;
  • To the passport - 3.7 * 4.7 cm;
  • In a private case - 9 * 12 cm;
  • Per month - 4 * 5 cm;
  • For skips - 6 * 9 cm.

Another line of format

The main thing is that the photo frame coincides with the photo. Therefore, manufacturers produce special paper with defined dimensions:

  • A8 (5 * 7 cm);
  • A7 (7 * 10 cm);
  • A6 (10 * 15 cm);
  • A5 (15 * 21 cm);
  • A4 (21 * 30 cm);
  • A3 (30 * 42 cm).

Why do you need to choose the right paper? As a result, you do not have to look at an incomplete, cropped image or cut the white fields that were superfluous. Usually in the photo sealing presented formats for printing with examples.

Order features

If you make an order online, then the system when sending an image says which parameters will be more appropriate to obtain a high-quality picture. If you choose the format at your request, and not a recommended program, then the administration does not take responsibility for obtaining low quality.

It would seem why in the modern age of digital technologies printing photographs, because most photos are visible in digital form. Knowing people say, the photo comes to life only when printed on paper, has a framing and hanging in the room to decorate the interior.

Remember that before printing, you need to select certain parameters that will affect the quality of the printed image.

All of your favor, Timur Mustaev.

We need, for example, when we want to print our photo in photo laboratories. Modern cameras give us the opportunity to receive snapshots in very large permissions, but when editors in the photo editors and cropping, we receive frames of arbitrary size. In order not to receive when printing is not at all what you need, save yourself a table where you are specified. photo sizes in cm. Perhaps you do not use, or simply do not particularly familiar with the editor of Photoshop, then these files will be useful. Here is the full version, and for standard sizes. In ready-made PSD files insert your photo, save and sear off. All PSD files in the resolution of 300 dpi (300 dpi), this is done so that the photo quality is at a high level.

Standard photo sizes Usually used here: 10 × 15, 15 × 20, 20 × 30. So that you can imagine immediately, remember: 20 × 30 is a sheet of size A4, 15 × 20 is half a4, called A5.

If you need a more detailed list of sizes, then look below in the table.

Size photo in inches

Standard Size in inches
9 × 13. 3,543 x 5,117
10 × 15. 3,937 x 5,907

At the time when you make a picture, the camera receives the data that the digital image creates. There are many different file formats that can be retrieved and processed using editing programs. The most used are as follows:

The choice of the right format is very important, and may be crucial depending on the quality and processing level that you intend to do. These are the pros and cons of the use of each of the file formats.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)

DNG (Digital Negative Format)

PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)

BMP (Bitmap)

PSD (Photoshop Document)

JPEG

This is probably the most famous image format, and the one that most digital cameras provide as a finished product. You must remember that JPEG files are quickly compressed in the chamber and thus lead to loss of details and quality. They are essentially created in order to save so many images on the memory card, how much is possible. Some cameras include the quality options for the JPEG file (eg, low, medium and high). Basically, this means that the better the quality you need, the less the camera will give the original photo.

In general, JPEG is used for such purposes:

When photos are intended for personal use, for social networks, albums and prints in a small format, but not in the big one.

When you do not intend to expose intensive processing (for example, using Photoshop);

To send images by email (without a goal, to see them in a large format).

Benefits

  • Little size means that more photos will fit the memory card
  • Faster file transfer due to small size

disadvantages

  • Loss of quality due to image compression
  • Less features for manipulation features in photo editing programs.

TIFF.

This is the most commonly used standard file format that is used for printing or required by publishers. Even if the file ultimately is needed in JPEG, the created file is initially created in TIFF. It is usually not compressed and as a result makes it possible for a wide post processing. For the same reason, the file size is much more, so it will take more space on the memory card and the disk of your computer. Some cameras offer TIFF as the highest quality format.

Benefits

  • The possibility of wide manipulations when processing images
  • Ability to print in high quality and large formats

disadvantages

  • Larger file size (need more storage space)
  • Longer transmission and boot time due to file size

Raw.

The RAW format is usually available on advanced compact chambers and mirror chambers, and it is easy to install it; This is the best choice if you want to get a maximum of your camera, it is preferred by professional photographers. The problem is that without using the format of raw files, your camera will make adjustments that will affect the photos.

RAW files are compressed in such a way that all initially obtained is preserved. This means that settings such as white balance, exposure, contrast, saturation, sharpness can still be changed using editing software after the snapshot has been made. Photographing in this format will require a lot of space on the memory card, not to mention the post-processing time. It will also require certain basic knowledge in editors such as Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop, as the files must be edited and converts before they can be used (sharing online, print, send friends, etc.).

Benefits

  • This is a file with the highest image quality.
  • Extensive opportunities in post-processing and image manipulations

disadvantages

  • You need time to convert and edit photos (you edit raw files)
  • Large file size will require more storage space and more post-processing time.

DNG. (Digital. Negative)

Nowadays, almost every camera uses its own format to get raw files. Even the cameras of the same manufacturer often use different formats, which means that the software must be able to read files from various cameras and formats. As a result, the problem faced by software developers is how to manage and constantly provide updates to their software products so that they can read all camera formats.

So, DNG. This file format created by Adobe is an attempt to create a standard file format for all manufacturers and cameras. It is proposed as the main format of raw files or as an alternative to the native format of the manufacturer. One of the storage problems of files in their original format is that in the coming years you may not have access to them, since they are specific for a specific camera and manufacturer. But using Adobe DNG Convertor means that you can save your files in DNG format for maximum security. This actually adds one more step in the post-processing process, which is required for extra time. However, if you use such a program as Lightroom, it will help to convert large files of the files so that you do not have to do it manually.

Benefits

  • Ability to use editors such as Lightroom and Photoshop
  • Probably, a safer option in the long run to protect yourself from the inability to open or have access to files.

disadvantages

  • You need extra time to convert the source files of the camera in DNG (if your camera is not possible to create files immediately in this format)

PNG.

Designed in the 90s as an improved version of GIF format, PNG files are ideal for use on the Internet. The advantage of PNG is that they are compressed without loss, while maintaining all the digital parts. But in contrast to other formats, this quality does not imply a large file size that is not entirely convenient when you want to quickly upload an image on the Internet. Another advantage of PNG files is that they admit partial (discarding the shadows) or complete transparency, which is ideal for overlaying and logos.

Benefits

  • Compression without loss means good quality that will not suffer when editing
  • The ability to maintain transparency, which is ideal for things like imposition and logos

disadvantages

  • Quality will not be sufficient for printing in any size

GIF.

Like PNG, GIF files are ideal for use on the Internet. Compression without loss means that the image quality will not suffer, and, like PNG, they also have the ability to maintain transparency (but do not support partial transparency) and can be used for animation. However, the limitations of GIF files are that they may contain a maximum of 256 colors, and, therefore, this is not the best choice for photos, but rather for images with a limited palette of color.

Benefits

  • The small size of the files makes them ideal for use on the Internet.
  • Files may contain animation

disadvantages

  • Color restriction means that this is not the best choice for photos
  • Does not support partial transparency as discarding shadows

BMP

Another format without loss of quality, BMP was developed by Microsoft initially for use on the Windows platform, but is now recognized by Mac. BMP are large files, as the color information is saved in each individual pixel image without compression. As a result, it gives a high-quality digital file that can be used for printing, but it is not quite suitable for the Internet.

Benefits

  • Can be used for printing, as images are stored in high quality format

disadvantages

  • Large file size will require a lot of storage space.

PSD.

This type of Adobe Photoshop file uses by default to save data. The big advantage of PSD files is that they allow manipulation on certain separate layers, and not on the image itself. This is very important for such types of extensive impact on the image as retouching. This gives much greater flexibility and the possibility of finely adjusting the image, since the layers can be added, delete, edit at any time, while not affecting the original image (as long as they are performed on the layers) or other layers. But remember that as soon as the PSD file layers are combined (this process is essentially merges all the layers), it cannot be canceled, so make sure that you have saved your file as PSD before combining the layers.

Benefits

  • The possibility of wide control in the image on separate layers
  • When the image is ready, it can be susceptible in any other format.

disadvantages

  • A file consisting of a variety of layers can be very large in size due to the stored additional information.

There are a number of the most used and common file types. Professional photographers are usually removed in the raw format (even if the destination file is needed in JPEG), convert to DNG, then edit photos in programs such as Photoshop or Lightroom. But, as you can see, it is very important to choose the correct format to create the original photo and its subsequent saving.

Many of us love to take pictures. A variety and availability of digital cameras make a photograph of popular pleasure, allowing to capture bright, colorful moments of our life. At the same time, the high quality of the photos received, it does not guarantee the same quality when printing digital pictures on a standard rolled photo paper. In this material, I will tell you what sizes of photos for printing, submissing the table of available formats, and also give a number of examples, allowing you to clearly understand the features of various types of photos.

Thesaurus of a digital photographer

To understand what kind of photos of photographs for printing and what is the specificity, we need to, first of all, understand the basic concepts needed to understand the digital printing process.

Linear photo size - Sizes of photographs in millimeters (width-height).

Parameters photo in pixels - The size of your photo, expressed in the amount of pixels (width-height).

Pixel - The smallest image element is usually a rectangular or round-shaped point, and a certain color. The image consists of hundreds and thousands of such pixels, which are counted both horizontally (width) and vertically (height). For example, the image size is 1181 × 1772 (typically corresponding to the standard photo of 10x15), has 1181 pixels wide, and 1772 in height.

At the same time, the more such dot pixels in your image, the usually it is high quality, with better detail and drawing objects.

Proportions of side - The ratio of the sides of the photo (for example, 1: 1, 2: 3, 3: 4 and so on). The parameter shows how long the side is shorter or longer than the other.

Raster Image (Raster) - An image consisting of such pixels.

DPI - (Abbreviation from Dots Per Inch - dots per inch) - a parameter used to characterize the resolution of printing photos, that is, the amounts of dots per inch (inch is 2.54 cm). The basic print standard is 150 DPI, optimal - 300 dpi. Accordingly, the higher the DPI, the higher the print quality of the existing digital photo.

Standard (format) photo - This is a pattern ratio of the sizes of the photo, which it is important to stick to the final image on paper.

Why it is important to consider the standard size of photos

In the absolute majority of cases, the digital pictures you received will be printed on a photo paper having standard dimensions. If the proportions of digital pictures and the selected sizes of photographic paper, photographs can exit stretched, not clear, lose as an image, have other unwanted consequences for you.

Therefore, it is important to measure the standard sizes of photographs when printing, and the dimensions of your digital photo in pixels have the optimal print format.

Popular photo sizes for printing with table formats

The generally accepted standard of the photo is a size of 10 by 15 cm. The size of a proportionate digital photo is usually a little more (for example, 10.2 per 15.2 cm), and the size in the pixels of this photo will be 1205 at 1795 pixels.

Other formats are shown in the table below:

If you plan to work with widescreen printing, it has quite wide digital image requirements:

If you know the DPI parameter and the number of pixels of your photo, then using the formula below, you can calculate the necessary sizes of the sides of your photo:

In this formula:

x - the size of one side of the photo in centimeters you need;
R - Part side resolution in pixels;
d - 2.54 cm (standard inches);
DPI is usually 300 (less often - 150).
For example, let the shower width of 1772 pixels, and dpi \u003d 300.
Then 1772 * 2.54 / 300 \u003d 15.00 cm in print width.

Popular photo formats

In addition to the already mentioned classic size 10 to 15 (A6 format), there are other popular sizes of photographs for printing. Among them, I would allocate the following:

Conclusion

This article presents the standard size of photographs for printing, popular photo formats, as well as a convenient formula for calculating the optimal size of the sides of the photo. I recommend to adhere to the formats given by me, it guarantees the quality of printed photos, which means that the visual pleasure of viewing them is.

Hello!!!
In the 20th century, photographers did not arise about the format of the photographer created. Then it was possible to show a photo of any size. Now there are several formats that enjoy the greatest popularity. It is explained by this prevalence of typical photo albums, there are not very attractive images of non-standard format.
What are the size of photographs in digital format?

The usual shot, printed on the photo paper, has only physical dimensions. The digital photo of different properties is much more. You can protect almost any image to theoretically print. But if this process occurs when pixel density is less than 300 dpi, some artifacts will be displayed on the printed photo. Therefore, there are some restrictions on which it will be discussed below.
Sizes of photos in pixels

The most important parameter is the size (resolution) of the digital image. Computer programs display the size of photographs in pixels. For printing standard photo, permission is required at least 1795 x 1205 pixels. A snapshot of this size now allows you to get any digital camera. Even in mobile phones, cameras are already very rarely found, not able to save photos in this resolution.
Sizes of photos in cm (centimeters)

A standard format is called one that has a physical dimension of 10 x 15 cm. To print memorable pictures, larger format is usually selected. The standard photo sizes also include 15 x 20 cm formats, 20 x 30 cm and 30 x 45 cm. To print such images, high resolution images will be required. Usually for shooting in this case, a compact, systemic or mirror camera is used.

Aspect ratio
An equally important parameter is the aspect ratio. This property shows how long the side is longer than the other. The standard is considered to be the aspect ratio of 3: 2. The same parameter also has most matrices installed in modern cameras. Sometimes there are other ratios in the chamber menu. When they choose, a banal trimming edges of the image occurs. The resolution is reduced to one value.
Often photographers choose the aspect ratio of 16: 9. It is called widescreen. Now the same parameter has many monitors and televisions. These pictures are displayed in full screen. But the size of photographs for printing is changed. The width of the printed snapshot must be enlarged. When choosing a standard print format, it is necessary to trim quite a decent part of the image.
Photobumaga

The emergence of new standards dictate manufacturers of photographic paper. No photo laboratory will be free to print a picture of an unusual size, as it takes a cutting photo. And this is already applied to additional services.

Sizes of small photos

The few popular formats were mentioned above. And in the table below you will find more accurate information about what kind of photos are. But this is not the most complete list. Recently, people regularly print snapshots on A4 format photo tags. For such photos, the corresponding framework has been produced for a long time. Also, their manufacture can be ordered in bagent workshops.
Miniature pictures are now printed extremely rarely. The size of a small photo can be 9 x 13 cm. If a snapshot is required to a wallet, you will have to print it yourself on the printer or do a non-standard order in the photo sealle. For the size of the photos, see is not always used as the main unit of measure. Photos for documents (driver's license, passports and others) are measured in millimeters, since in this case an important great accuracy.
Large format printing: photo sizes

Recently, large-format printing has been gaining great popularity. This is the name of the program printout image of large sizes with the aspect ratio of 3: 2 or any other. Usually such a service is required to print banners with vector graphics in promotional or congratulatory purposes.

Photo sizes rarely allow them to print them in such large formats. From the above table, you see that for obtaining high-quality prints in a 40 x 60 cm format, a frame with a resolution of 4000 x 6000 pixels is required. Such a photo is able to provide only cameras with a 24 megapixel matrix.
Conclusion
The tables above are desirable to always have at hand. With their help, you can quickly find out to what values \u200b\u200byou can reduce the size of the photo in case of such a need.
