The topic of rabbit breeding is revealed by a successful Russian entrepreneur who has been professionally engaged in various areas in agribusiness for more than 15 years. Participated in the creation and development of both his own and third-party projects. He has extensive knowledge in many areas of agricultural production. The article contains a short but very capacious business plan for breeding rabbits (up to 1000 heads per year) with specific figures for income and expenses.
You probably know the saying: The surest way to throw money away is to invest in agriculture". Well, the time has come to completely refute this saying and forget about it once and for all. After all, we will talk about one of the most stable and profitable areas - rabbit breeding as a business. Namely, about creating your own rabbit mini-farm, which will provide you with a constant source of income all year round.
Firstly, rabbit meat has exceptional dietary properties. In addition to the fact that rabbit meat contains all the essential amino acids, it is absorbed by the human body by 90% (pork, beef and lamb by only 60%) and helps regulate metabolism. And these properties of rabbit meat can be played well. Agree that there are more than enough people who are on a diet for one reason or another.
Secondly, the market for rabbit meat is practically not busy, and it will not be difficult to wedge into it. This is primarily due to the fact that no one can compete with rabbit meat: neither poultry farms, nor pig farms, nor livestock complexes, that is, this niche is actually empty. Yes, and ask yourself, how often do you see an abundance of domestic-made rabbit carcasses on the shelves of supermarkets?
Before opening a mini-farm, we will consider the two most acceptable forms of doing business: peasant farms and individual entrepreneurs.
In fact, the activity of a peasant farm is the same as an individual entrepreneur, but with only one difference: it can include citizens who jointly own the property of the enterprise and have the right to carry out any economic activity. At the same time, the KFH does not have its own statutory documents, a memorandum of association and its own name. By registering a KFH in your own name, you become its head, or more precisely, an ordinary individual entrepreneur.
But whether it is worth accepting new equity holders into it or not depends on the situation, but I would answer this - no. Since in case of success, problems with partners (shareholders) will inevitably arise, which can lead to the complete liquidation of the enterprise. In addition, according to the law, you have the right to manage the peasant farm in one person. The advantage of a peasant farm is that it can count on state support in the form of various subsidies and tax benefits.
To be honest, in my opinion, this is the most acceptable form of business organization for a rabbit mini-farm. The fact is that the legal field of KFH has no clear boundaries, and constant disputes have been going on around this for a whole decade. And the so-called advantage of peasant farms in obtaining state benefits and subsidies is completely broken against a bureaucratic wall.
For example, to get a preferential loan for agricultural producers, you need to apply to the local district administration. As part of the commission considering such applications, there will be good uncles and aunts who are vitally interested in obtaining these same loans. Now guess who will win the soft loan tender?
As a taxation system for this type of activity, it is worth choosing from two forms of taxation: Simplified tax regime, income minus expenses or the Unified Agricultural Tax.
OKVED with encoding - A.01.25.2 is suitable for you. What does it mean: breeding rabbits and fur-bearing animals on a farm. This group has restrictions prohibiting the production of skins and skins of animals obtained as a result of hunting and catching them.
In order to mechanize the entire process of growing and keeping rabbits as much as possible, it is best to use a shed system. A shed is a wood or metal framed shed that combines cages with rabbits under one roof.
No special permission is required to build a mini-farm. All you need is to have a piece of land outside the city, owned or leased. The only catch is the allowable distance of the mini-farm from residential buildings. Such things are regulated by local governments, so ask in advance where you can put a farm, and where it is unacceptable.
The place for the farm itself should be on a hill or on a plot of land with a slight slope.
Try to avoid lowlands, as rabbits do not tolerate high humidity. Ideally, the entire area under the farm should be asphalted, concreted or gravel, as well as arrange a storm sewer and water drainage system.
So, the mini-farm project will allow you to get 700-1000 rabbit carcasses per year, and the farm area will be about 800-1000 m² of land.
Sheds for rabbit breeding
Due to the fact that cages in sheds are located in one place, this significantly saves building materials and time for their maintenance. Cages in sheds are set in two tiers, on both sides of the covered passage. In order to get more light and fresh air into the cages with rabbits, windows of 20x100 cm in size are made on their back walls, with removable hinged planks. The length of the shed can be arbitrary (in our case, it is 20 m), height - 240 cm, width of the passage - 120-140 cm. The floor in the passage is concreted or asphalted with a slope towards the cages.
The cage for the main herd has a length of 100-130 cm, a width of 60-70 cm, with a front wall height of 55 cm, and a rear wall of 35-40 cm. upper layer cells. A similar pallet should be for the cells of the lower tier.
All cells are best made from galvanized welded mesh(cell size 18X18, 20X20, 16X48 mm).
Cages in sheds are divided into two compartments - feed and nesting, and a mesh nursery is placed between them (cell size 35X35 or 25X50 mm), but feeders and drinkers are placed under the nursery, which significantly saves space. Thus, one shed contains 60 cages, in which up to 400 young animals can be grown per year.
A feed shop is a room where an impressive stock of concentrated feed (compound feed, grain) will be stored, which should be enough for 2-3 months. If desired, the feed workshop can be equipped with a professional grain crusher (production of at least 500 kg / h) and a granulator in order to independently produce compound feed and save on this cost item.
Also on the territory of the mini-farm there should be a room for spare equipment (feeders, drinkers, etc.) and building materials (netting, boards, fasteners, etc.).
With the mass slaughter of rabbits, it is necessary to build a separate room, or rather an extension to the building where the refrigeration equipment will be located. In the slaughterhouse, a separate place for slaughter is allocated, which is equipped with a blood drainer and special. an oven for burning offal (heads, paws, entrails, illiquid skins, etc.). This approach allows you to create a continuous process for processing rabbit carcasses. That is, they scored, butchered, immediately packed and froze.
The manure collector is an ordinary pit with concrete walls and an open roof (canopy). The depth of the pit is not less than 3 meters, the width and length are arbitrary. The manure collector is located in the farthest corner of the farm and as far as possible from the sheds, feed shop and refrigeration equipment.
Consider business processes for raising rabbits for meat.
Since the main product of a rabbit-breeding mini-farm is meat, the breeds of rabbits must be meat, respectively. There should not be any downy, meat-skin, and even more so crossbred rabbits. At first glance, there is no difference in weight between adult rabbits of meat and meat breeds, however, by the age of 3 months, the latter reach a live weight of up to 3.5 kg. There are only three of them: New Zealand red, New Zealand white and Californian.
My advice to you: do not buy breeding stock in bird markets. The best place to buy is specialized agricultural. Exhibitions. Here you can find good suppliers of pedigree rabbits, evaluate their products on the spot and compare the offered rabbits with breed standards.
I very often heard the opinion that rabbits are herbivores and on grass alone you can get tons of rabbit meat. Believe me, but it's not.
Juicy and grassy feeds (grass, hay, straw, etc.) in the diet of rabbits make up only 15-20% in terms of nutritional value, the rest is grain meal. At the same time, there is a huge number of rations for feeding rabbits, as well as the characteristics of the feed given to them. In order not to confuse you in all sorts of comparisons, below I will give a table of the combined type of feeding. Be aware that the succulent and grassy foods in this table are interchangeable.
Table No. 1: Maximum daily allowances of basic feed for rabbits in grams.

In the morning, rabbits are given juicy food and greens, and in the afternoon and evening - concentrates (compound feed, grain). At the same time, rabbits must be provided with clean drinking water around the clock.
In breeding rabbits, I use the following scheme. At 60 cells, the upper tier of cells is occupied by females (14 cells) plus one male (1 cell). The remaining 45 cells are used to raise young animals. From each rabbit I get 3 births: spring, summer and autumn. I keep rabbits with a female together up to 2 months of age, and sometimes more (in the late autumn period). About 25 rabbits come out of one female per year, which in total amount to 300-350 units of young animals (14 females multiply 25 rabbits).
It is impossible to determine the exact number of young animals, since a waste among rabbits is inevitable, so we will take a minimum of 300 pieces. This number of young animals is freely placed on the remaining tiers with cages (7-8 pieces per cage). As a result, we have the following data: 3 sheds are multiplied by 300 pieces. rabbits and at the output we get 900 rabbit carcasses per year.
But I would not advise you to keep a separate herd for purebred breeding. If we recalculate the maintenance of such a herd for the time and money spent on feed, then it will be easier to buy breeding replacement young animals every two years.
As you understand, the main expense item in rabbit breeding as a business is feed. It is very expensive to feed rabbits with purchased compound feeds, it is impossible to grow cereals on your own, it is also impossible to reduce the norms for giving feed, as this will lead to a sharp decrease in productivity. Therefore, the only way to reduce this item of expenditure is engage in the production of feed.
All you need is a powerful corn crusher and a feed pelletizer, as rabbits are reluctant to eat ground grain. And, of course, raw materials in the form of grain and grain waste. This is precisely the essence of savings, because grain waste is half the price of mixed fodder.
Below I will give 3 concentrate feed recipes for rabbits of all ages.
1) Recipe No. K-92-1 mixed feed concentrate for adult rabbits.
2) Recipe No. K-91-1 mixed feed concentrate for young animals.
3) Recipe for compound feed concentrate for rabbits of all ages.
Do not try to prepare for the winter such juicy food as silage and root crops. It's one thing when you keep 20-30 rabbits, and quite another thing when their livestock exceeds 1000 pieces. Harvesting and growing such feed will not only take a lot of time, but will also require impressive investments to pay hired workers. The only exception is hay, since it is rather difficult to buy well-leafed and vitamin hay.
Try as much as possible mechanize all manual labor. A good option in this case is a mini-tractor, on which you can bring feed to the sheds and take out manure. Also take care of the automatic water supply for rabbits.
So we come to the main component of our rabbit business - the sale of meat. And here you need to consider all possible ways.
Building your own customer base can be a good start. That is, acquaintances, relatives, acquaintances of acquaintances, and so on. This category of people should not be underestimated. There were times when almost the entire regular batch of rabbits left me right from the yard. Someone took live, someone finished carcasses, but something else is important, how to create this database quickly and efficiently?
With friends and relatives, everything is clear, they called, came, bought, but strangers are attracted through advertising. Use any advertising: ads in newspapers, on the street, etc. The main thing is an acceptable pricing policy. You should not raise the price of meat to the sky, make it affordable for all categories of buyers, and those who want to taste tender, homemade rabbit meat will not be long in coming.
You can sell meat directly from the farm without any permits. An exception is resellers who need the usual certificate from the veterinarian that you have a livestock of rabbits.
The sale of rabbit carcasses through restaurants seems very attractive at first glance. However, be prepared for the fact that almost every restaurant will refuse you. And all because most restaurants do not have rabbit dishes on the menu.
Therefore, you should not directly contact the administration of such establishments with an offer to buy rabbit meat. It is better to contact the chef, and with a proposal not to buy meat, but simply cook it and present him with 2-3 rabbit carcasses. For many, this approach will seem ridiculous, but believe me, it works great. Of course, not all restaurants will become your customers and at first you will lose some profit, but those who agree will become a stable distribution channel.
However, here, unlike selling meat from the yard, you a veterinary certificate form No. 2 is required. In addition to the local veterinary administration, be sure to contact the local SES, the regional center for standardization and metrology. The fact is that all kinds of norms governing the sale of meat are constantly changing, so you should get advice in the above instances.
Wholesale depots, shops and supermarkets within our project are not an option. It's just that everything depends on the volume of meat produced, and our volumes are small - 2 tons of meat per year, which are made up of the following indicators: 1 rabbit carcass - 2 kg, 1000 carcasses - 2000 kg. It's all about the certification of the farm itself, the slaughterhouse, the processing shop, etc. The annual execution and confirmation of all these documents will eat up the bulk of the profits. But if you decide to use this option, then I advise you to contact the points of sale directly and resolve such issues on an individual basis.
Trying to sell rabbit meat through retail chains, you will encounter large wholesale suppliers, and these are extremely low prices for your product. And they are low to such an extent that they can completely ruin your enterprise. Such a way of realization is appropriate only if the produced volumes exceed 5-6 tons of meat per year and additional sources of income will be added to this.
Consider how to use by-products to generate additional income.
For the majority of the population, rabbits are not only tasty and dietary meat, but also fur. However, the situation with the sale of skins is terrible, but not a dead end.
When slaughtering rabbits, be sure to preserve the skins, and it doesn’t matter what they are, summer or winter, as there is a buyer for each product. It's just that the price for them is quite low, somewhere around 30-40 rubles. a piece. They are purchased mainly by large enterprises for the manufacture of leather and fur products. Therefore, in your free time, be sure to look for those in your area. Of course, on this income item you won’t earn much, but at least pay back part of the same feed.
Natural organic fertilizers have always been and will be in price, but you can’t raise a lot of money on manure, due to small volumes. Biohumus is another matter. Biohumus is a liquid, highly concentrated fertilizer obtained as a result of manure fermentation in special, biogas plants. Surely you have heard about this, when natural gas methane is obtained from animal waste, but biohumus is a by-product of processing. I saw a similar fertilizer bottled in plastic bottles in stores for summer residents, and they were willing to buy it. So no one bothers you to do such a business, besides, biohumus has a long shelf life.
Bunker feeders, rabbit watering systems and battery cages are always in demand. Many owners of country houses prefer to grow small animals for their own needs in the warm season. For example, a 3-cell cell battery made of galvanized mesh and metal. profile, as well as equipped with feeders and drinkers, the market costs about 5-8 thousand rubles.
And here, dear rabbit breeders, I can’t give exact figures for the initial investment with all my desire. And I won’t take them from the ceiling to draw a beautiful picture (as it is done everywhere), looking at which one gets the impression of easy and multimillion-dollar earnings. After all, it all depends on the specific situation.
Firstly, the prices for building materials in each region are different. Secondly, someone already has the necessary equipment, stocks of building materials, the same mini-tractor, etc., while someone will have to start from scratch. Therefore, I will simply give a list of the necessary equipment and building materials, based on which you can easily calculate the initial costs for yourself.
Annual expenses.
Annual income.
Of course, these are not petrodollars, but not a meager salary at some municipal enterprise either. Such an income will fully correspond to your labor costs on a mini-farm, which will amount to 3-4 hours a day.
Last argument: no one bothers you to expand production over time. As soon as the system works and justifies itself, and you realize that you are capable of more, then boldly go forward, mastering more and more new markets.
Every rabbit breeder will be happy to learn the basics of rabbit breeding as a business from our article. We also attach one of the most popular and effective business plan options that can ensure your success in this endeavor.
Many people like rabbit meat, because it is tasty, tender and dietary, fully justifying its cost. Rabbit fur is a wonderful raw material for making warm, cozy winter clothes, from fur coats to hats and children's mittens. It can also be imitated as furs of rare breeds. The down of this animal is very much in demand in the production of velor, suede and knitwear.
Given that there are no more prolific animals in the world than rabbits, the business of breeding them can bring you a large income, paying off in the first year. Only one female per year can give you half a centner of meat and about three dozen skins from her offspring. If this is a downy female, you get a whole kilogram of down. From just one, and this is not the limit! But on a rabbit farm, more than a dozen of these animals can be bred.
Video about rabbit breeding
You need to be a serious person to breed rabbits. Don't start a business without knowing about the craft, its pros and cons, and armed with a business plan and the necessary funds. What kind of animal is a rabbit, how it eats, breeds, what it gets sick, how to treat - all this needs to be known before breeding and taken into account in the process.
The simplest scheme for an acute shortage of the family budget can be several purchased stands, or even the simplest home-made ones. However, this is not the best way to get rich, because in this way you will not breed enough rabbits. Although, unlike industrial rabbit breeding, personal farming is usually not as automated, and feed is used, as a rule, cheaper and easier, the purchased cages, building materials and the rabbits themselves for breeding will not pay off soon.
Many people like rabbit meat, because it is tasty, tender and dietary, fully justifying its cost.
Having a sufficient area of land, you can breed animals in a pit. A small hole can hold up to two hundred rabbits, and they dig holes for themselves, and without your special attention they breed there. There may be several holes. A major disadvantage of this method is that rabbits from the pit are not suitable for the subsequent sale of skins, only for the sale of meat. However, this is a very profitable method, in the market a few carcasses per day are easily dispersed.
Breeding rabbits as a business is especially important with good financial injections. The more you invest, the more you get. Good money helps to keep animals in decent, best conditions. But the better the yield from them, the better the conditions that determine health, growth, reproduction rate, quality of skins, marketing opportunities. This means that carcasses, skins and fluff can be sold more expensive and more often.
Cages can stand both indoors and outdoors, it depends on climatic and weather conditions
Cages can stand both indoors and outdoors, it depends on climatic and weather conditions. In summer, they are taken out to nature, and the rabbit wintering takes place indoors. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account the constant change in the microclimate in the rabbitry - to regulate the content of water and ammonia vapors, to ventilate the room. If the winter in your lane is warm, not frosty, the cages can be left outside in the winter.
What should the cells look like?
The choice of rabbit cage design is very wide.
The choice of rabbit cage design is very wide. They can be square or round, short or long, hold one rabbit or many, have one or many tiers. There are even specialized "houses" for males, young rabbits or females with offspring. In order to walk young animals, walking is recommended to cover.
Getting more and more popular shed rabbit breeding system. It differs from the outer cage in increased convenience regarding working conditions, such as, for example, the simplest mechanization that allows you to quickly remove manure and deliver water and feed to rabbits. At the same time, labor productivity is incredibly increased. A single worker is able to serve up to one hundred and thirty females with over a thousand babies in offspring - twice as many as using conventional cages. Once you spend on sheds, you free yourself from paying salaries to the second employee.
Advice to rabbit breeders who breed rabbits for down and skins: provide animals with the opportunity to constantly live in the open air. The quality of the products is thus much higher.
Rabbit breeds are classified according to their output: downy, meat and meat-and-skin breeds
Rabbit breeds are classified according to their output: downy, meat and meat-skin breeds. The latter include not only the famous chinchilla, but also the butterfly, giants (gray and white), silver and black-brown. Valuable breeds give, accordingly, valuable fur, but not everyone can afford to breed them. However, among the whole variety of breeds, you can definitely choose the one that would be most convenient for you to breed according to means, conditions and goals.
The breeding of downy breeds of rabbits is currently not very relevant, since it is far from possible to sell down and skins everywhere, which thundered in popularity in Soviet times. Therefore, for novice businessmen, we recommend starting rabbit breeding with meat breeds.
It is possible to breed rabbits, both by crossing individuals of different breeds, and by mating individuals of the same breed (purebred). The first option helps to improve such qualities as: precocity, fertility, vitality, economy in feed consumption without compromising the mass and quality of meat. Since these qualities are less and less evident with each new generation, crossbred rabbits are usually sent to slaughter immediately after fattening. With the help of the second option, new valuable qualities are developed in rabbits, which are preserved from generation to generation, and if necessary, then enhanced by the first method.
You can breed rabbits, both by crossing individuals of different breeds, and by mating individuals of the same breed.
To make your business grow faster, you can increase the fertility of females and the number of births per year. This is achieved very simply - immediately after the birth of the cubs, the female happens to the next male. This comes out without any problems, but it must be taken into account that the female ages faster if she is not properly fed. This is done with the help of a sufficient amount of diverse and concentrated green fodder, which replenishes the high energy expenditure of females during the period of simultaneous pregnancy and feeding.
A healthy rabbit gives up to 8 rounds of about a dozen rabbits per year. Keep an eye on the consistency of the performance of females - over time, it decreases, and females have to be culled.
As we have already mentioned, the importance of proper rabbit nutrition for the prosperity of your business is enormous. Any feed used must contain the entire set of nutrients and supplements necessary for the growth and development of animals - carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Rabbits should not need clean water either. What food is used for this?
Rabbits don't need clean water either.
As you can see, rabbits are not very whimsical in food, simply requiring its diversity. However, lactating females and calves additionally need animal compound feeds rich in proteins and a spectrum of B vitamins. They include: fish meal, meat and meat and bone meal, milk (both fresh and dry), as well as skim.
In parallel with the topic of nutrition, attention should be paid to the prevention of animal diseases. By nature, the immunity of rabbits is very weak, and the number of diseases to which they are susceptible is many, including those that people get sick. In order to protect broods from disease, you should not only keep the cages clean at all times, but also consult with a competent veterinarian, and vaccinate all rabbits against the most common infections.
In parallel with the topic of nutrition, attention should be paid to the prevention of animals from diseases.
Being involved in rural business in any way, you can seriously think about how useful it will be for you to also breed rabbits. Is such a business profitable for you personally? Finding the answer to this question is best to start by reading the rabbit breeding business plan. We present one of the best examples for this undertaking below.
This business plan describes all the intricacies of the rabbit business, allowing you to assess the degree of profitability of such a project in business. It would be wrong to call this project exclusively rural. After all, rabbit breeding can also be done in partnerships organized by gardeners and gardeners, or in urban suburbs. Therefore, a closer definition of the category for breeding rabbits, the business plan of which we present, is the livestock business. The easiest way to start is by breeding meat breeds in order to then engage in the marketing of rabbit meat, so below we will focus on this.
Of the organizational and legal forms of doing business, the optimal form for rabbit breeding is the form of an individual entrepreneur. It involves significantly lower taxes, a simplified form of accounting, as well as mutual settlements with end consumers.
The easiest way to start with breeding meat breeds, then to sell rabbit meat
Since the demand for rabbit meat, firstly, is not too high, and secondly, it depends on the region of sale, this project is considered moderately successful, and also highly dependent on your ability to find end users.
To determine the profitability of rabbit breeding specifically in your area, you should analyze the local market in the field of animal husbandry, and rabbit breeding in particular. This will identify potential buyers, wholesalers and retailers, as well as determine their needs. The latter will help you not to spend more money on starting a business than necessary.
In our example, your company will be a rabbit-breeding farm for 60 heads, subsequently having the opportunity to expand its specialization, in addition to meat, also selling skins and liver.
Having settled the rabbits in cages, hire a worker to take care of your household
Production plan:
Meat is easiest to sell by locating the farm near district or regional centers
Even before all these operations, a marketing plan should be formed in order to eliminate the factor of overproduction and make the sale itself faster. The easiest way to sell meat is to locate the farm near district or regional centers where large supermarkets are located. Other significant buyers may also be meat markets and shops, owners of meat counters, private individuals. If, in addition to selling meat, one also sells skins, it will matter how far away private fashion designers and fur ateliers are located.
Speaking about the financial plan, we came close to the question of exactly how much money you can earn in a year by privately raising rabbits. Below we will indicate all the main columns of expenses and income.
How much to spend:
As you can see, rabbits are not very whimsical in food, simply requiring its variety.
The total cost in the first year: 218-370 thousand rubles.
How much will you get:
The total amount of income for the first year: 460-535 thousand rubles.
Thus, the net profit for the first year of operation of the enterprise will be from 90 to 235 thousand rubles, on average - 160 thousand rubles.

You can increase your profit even more. To do this, send the most active and healthy rabbits not to the cutting room, but to mating, while increasing the total number of cages. Additional expenses will be associated with this, but your income will increase proportionally.
When breeding rabbits, it is important to consider the main thing - having started a business, do not stop halfway, treat business with all your attention, and you will undoubtedly be rewarded with a decent stable profit!
Animal husbandry is considered one of the most complex, resource-intensive and at the same time profitable areas of agriculture. However, this type of business is not necessarily characterized by multimillion-dollar investments in the purchase or construction of huge farms. For example, you can start rabbit breeding practically from scratch - it is enough to build several cages and purchase young animals of a suitable breed.
Breeding rabbits as a business - profitable or not? If the entrepreneur has a free plot, a personal subsidiary farm and access to a forage base, the answer will definitely be positive - even taking into account the fact that in this case only private clients, acquaintances and buyers in the agricultural market can sell products. If we are talking about creating a large rabbit farm and keeping a herd of several thousand heads, then such a project requires careful calculations, an analysis of the market capacity and the development of a full-fledged business plan.
Rabbit meat is used not only for cooking in restaurants or at home, but also in the production of canned food, sausages, semi-finished products, as well as for catering for recovering patients. Therefore, the clients of the rabbit farm can be:
Rabbits breed and grow very quickly. After birth, the female is immediately ready for a new mating, and due to the possibility of combining periods of pregnancy and lactation, she can bring offspring up to six times a year. By the age of four months, representatives of meat breeds reach a marketable weight of 4–5 kg sufficient for slaughter, as a result of which meat production becomes almost continuous.
Considering where to start raising rabbits, first of all, you should determine the priority direction of animal husbandry:
As a business, breeding rabbits for meat due to its high profitability is the most popular among entrepreneurs. The most common meat breeds include:
To obtain rabbit fur or down, breeds with beautiful thick wool of the original color are chosen. Despite the fact that fur rabbits have a lower body weight, their meat tastes in no way inferior to other varieties. Suitable for industrial breeding:
In the business plan for breeding rabbits with calculations, the costs of forming a breeding herd must be taken into account. You should buy young animals only in nurseries or at special exhibitions after a mandatory examination by a veterinarian: the probability of acquiring sick animals with an unknown pedigree on the "bird" market is quite high. The cost of each copy is determined by its age: meat and meat-and-skin breeds are estimated at 420-450 rubles for each month of keeping on the farm.
Despite the apparent simplicity of the technology, the rabbit breeding business has many subtleties that are sometimes unknown even to an experienced farmer. To assess the prospects of this type of activity, any entrepreneur can download a rabbit breeding business plan template for free and make their own calculation of the main economic indicators: a project presented in numbers is more visual than an abstract concept.
The rabbit farm business plan consists of standard sections (overview, production and economic), however, such initial data as the cost of feed, breeding herd, land, market prices for products are purely individual and depend on specific regional conditions.
It should be noted that downloading a rabbit breeding business plan and adapting it for your own purposes is much easier and cheaper than ordering project development from third-party organizations for 50–60 thousand rubles. An additional advantage in this case will be the acquisition by the entrepreneur of some experience in conducting economic calculations, without which even the most profitable business becomes risky and unpredictable.
Ways to legalize the activities of the farm also require consideration in the finished business plan for breeding rabbits. The simplest organizational form is a personal subsidiary farm - in this case, the entrepreneur may not pay taxes, but has the right to sell products only to acquaintances or private buyers on collective farm markets.
In addition, in some regions, the size of the breeding herd is regulated for private household plots. To get rid of such restrictions and be able to supply meat to retail stores, the business plan for breeding rabbits at home should provide for registration with the tax authorities as an individual entrepreneur or a peasant farm. At the same time, it is necessary to choose a suitable taxation system: for a rabbit farm, the best option is the UAT at a rate of 6%.
In general, individual entrepreneurs and peasant farms are identical in terms of taxation and accounting - the main differences are that a peasant farm can have several owners, and the entrepreneur who created it has the right to receive a state grant under the agricultural industry development program.
A significant disadvantage when raising rabbits at home is the limitation of the total number of adults on the farm, depending on the distance to the living quarters. So, in 20 meters from the house it is allowed to keep no more than 20 animals. Therefore, in accordance with sanitary standards, for the construction of a large rabbit farm, a site protected from the wind is used, located at a distance of more than 300 m from the nearest houses, other farms, wetlands and landfills.
The area required to implement the business idea of rabbit breeding depends on the scale of the enterprise: all the facilities necessary to maintain a herd of 1000 heads will be located on a plot of 10-12 acres. However, if you buy or rent a few hectares, the remaining area can be used for growing fodder crops - alfalfa, corn, beets or barley, which will ultimately lead to significant savings on the purchase of feed.
Raising rabbits at home from scratch involves the use of one of four common technologies:
The technology of growing rabbits in a pit. At the same time, there is no need to build a farm - it is enough to choose a dry, elevated place and equip a brick-lined pit 1.6–2 m deep with several holes there. In addition to the advantages in the form of the simplicity of rabbitry equipment and the minimum requirements for start-up capital, breeding rabbits in pits as a business also has significant drawbacks: under such conditions, animals of fur and meat-and-skin breeds cannot be kept, and close contacts of individuals provoke an instant spread of diseases among them. In addition, when grown in a pit, rabbits become smaller and run wild due to the impossibility of carrying out selection work with them.
The territory of the future farm needs to be landscaped: to clear the site for construction, to ensure connection to electrical networks and uninterrupted supply of water from a well, well or water supply. In addition, according to sanitary requirements, the area with cages must be fenced with a solid or mesh fence 1.5 m high. In general, rabbit breeding as a business requires the construction of several structures, including:
Manure collector. A manure pit equipped with an open canopy with a depth of at least 3 m with concrete walls is located at the maximum distance from the slaughterhouse and rabbitries (according to sanitary standards - at a distance of at least 100 m).

In the home business, rabbit breeding involves the inclusion of animal food waste, cabbage, various cereals and self-harvested hay in the diet. However, with industrial maintenance, the entrepreneur will not be able to afford such a variety of feed, and therefore will be forced to purchase or procure:
The cost of a ton of hay is 5,000 rubles, root crops - 12,000 rubles, grain - 6,000 rubles, complete feed - from 8,000 to 12,000 rubles. Taking into account the daily feeding rate given below, in the business plan for breeding rabbits for a farm of 1000 heads, at least 500 thousand rubles a year must be allocated for the purchase of feed.
Rabbits can be fed with ordinary water from a well or well, provided that it is odorless and free of impurities. Drinking water is changed every day.
Meat and meat-and-skin breeds usually comfortably withstand changes in air temperature over a wide range, so they can be kept outdoors throughout the year. However, there are some factors to consider when breeding and raising rabbits:
In a breeding herd, there are four to eight females per male, which reach reproductive age at five to six months. The rabbit is kept separately and during mating they are alternately planted next to the rabbits. After 28–30 days, offspring of 6–8 rabbits can be expected from each.
The female is ready for a new mating immediately after birth, however, given that she must feed the offspring with milk for 5-7 weeks, it is recommended to mate once every three to four months. When kept outdoors, the first mating is carried out in early April, and when breeding rabbits in heated cages, throughout the year. Thus, after 12 months, the offspring of one rabbit will have 40–70 goals.
Any involves the maximum involvement of all the resources available to the entrepreneur. When considering, one should study the available material base and think over options for its use: for example, in a personal subsidiary plot, a slaughterhouse is set up in a summer kitchen, a feed workshop in a barn, sheds are built from improvised materials, and hay is harvested on a pasture on their own. In general, the cost of setting up a farm is determined by the location of the available land, the presence of buildings, water and power lines on it, the size and cost of the breeding herd.
A business such as raising rabbits at home also comes with ongoing costs, which can be calculated in terms of the year of operation of the farm, taking into account constant fluctuations in livestock sizes:
The income from rabbit breeding can only be calculated approximately, within the bounds, since neither the number of rabbits in litters, nor the percentage of survival of young animals, nor the final cost of meat on the market can be predicted in advance. The following minimum values can be used as initial data:
Thus, in the first year it is quite realistic to sell 960 carcasses weighing 3 kg each. The total income from their implementation will be 1,224,000 rubles. Considering, we should also not forget about the sale of rabbit skins at 350 rubles apiece and manure at 1000 rubles per ton.
Therefore, the total annual income of the farm can be estimated at 1,580,000 rubles, which, after deduction of taxes and operating expenses, is equivalent to 495,640 rubles of net profit. The profitability of the rabbit breeding business in this case will be 45% with a payback period of 3.5 years.
Building your own rabbit farm is a rather responsible step that requires a balanced approach. Most of the pros and cons of the rabbit breeding business are well known to farmers and owners of subsidiary plots, however, a novice entrepreneur should definitely familiarize himself with them in order to clearly understand the specifics of agricultural activity. Among the main advantages of rabbit breeding are the following factors:
The attractiveness of the rabbit breeding business is fully due to low competition, the availability of technology and the ability to scale quickly. At the same time, working with animals requires some preparation - without practical experience it is difficult to create optimal conditions for animals, choose the most efficient mode of operation of the enterprise, and even just butcher a rabbit carcass. In the following video, raising rabbits in terms of keeping and breeding technology is shown more clearly:
We must not forget that the efficiency and profitability of an enterprise is determined primarily by the presence of distribution channels. As such, you can use not only agricultural markets, but also wholesale companies, supermarkets, butchers. Of course, by concluding cooperation agreements with them, the entrepreneur assumes certain obligations regarding the volume and timing of deliveries, however, there are simply no other ways to create a successful business.

Successful rabbit breeding consists of several important components:
Previously, almost every village yard bred rabbits. Not for the sake of sale, but for the sake of the most delicious, most tender meat. Then this type of economy began to be considered unprofitable, the cages were empty, and the basis of all dishes was replaced by store-bought semi-finished products.
Only real fans of their business did not leave and continued to do what they love. They sincerely believed in success. And they turned out to be right.
A new wave of popularity of rabbit breeding as a business began with the development of peasant farms and personal subsidiary mini-enterprises. Business was also supported by television people, who were strenuously trumpeting about the dangers of everything imported and the benefits of their own - rural, self-grown.
In general, everything turned out to be correct.
Watch the video - an example of successful rabbit breeding as a business.
First, we propose to talk about the business plan for breeding rabbits in general. What do you need to know to create and promote a legally successful business?
Rabbit breeding as a business is actively supported at the state level. You can get good subsidies for its development. The Ministry of Agriculture of Russia in each region accompanies the conduct of such a business. If necessary, experts advise farmers, help with the purchase of valuable breeds of animals. Allocate land for construction.
At the very beginning, you will face an important question - KFH or IP?
There are advantages and disadvantages to both forms of business. Let's consider each option in more detail.
KFH (or peasant farming)
This is a form of business that:
In fact, the head of the peasant farm is the same individual entrepreneur. Only, according to the current legislation, he has the right to lead independently or take partners to help him.
In fact, this is what becomes a fatal mistake. Because along with the first serious profit comes a serious division. Sometimes this leads to the bankruptcy of the whole venture.Advantages:
Flaws: bureaucratic delays in obtaining material and other assistance from the state.
IP (individual entrepreneur)
An abbreviation familiar to almost everyone. IP is its own boss. Yes, he doesn't want help. But in the case of the "rabbit business" development occurs so quickly that outsiders can be dispensed with.
The actions of individual entrepreneurs, unlike the peasant farm, which appeared not so long ago, are clearly spelled out and regulated by laws from all sides.
Advantages:
Flaws: no outside help. Complete independence.
Here, too, you have to choose from two options.
Modern farmers, regardless of the type of activity and name, usually choose "simplified".
Let's take Mikhailov's Mini-farm as a basis. We open a rabbit breeding business for 60 heads.
Types of farm activities:
Market analysis is the study of the conduct of similar farms in your area.
The rabbit breeding market is practically not occupied. Demand is many times greater than supply. Therefore, at the moment it is very profitable to start it. Perhaps this is due to the national mentality of Russians, who prefer to think big. Like, one cow is better than 20 rabbits. But in reality, beef and pork are digested only by 60%, but rabbit meat - by 90%.
Yes, and a cow (approximately 200 kg of live weight) gives one calf per year. 5 rabbits from the breed of giants (10 kg or more each!), With proper breeding, in 5 months they will give 25 of their own kind. And this is one and a half cows!
Animal skins are willingly bought up for tailoring fur products.
So your main points of reference are:
There are many modifications of Mikhailov's mini-farms (rabbit farms). One occupies 1.5 square meters of area on the site.
It holds up to 30 rabbits.
Maintenance costs per year:
The same data per rabbit:
Advantages of farms of this type ahead of others in saving territory and the ability to build comfortable cages in several tiers. You can take care of the farm once a week. Offspring - 10 rabbits, future giants, per week. In less than a year, they will already weigh 4-6 kilograms.
15 mini-farms can easily fit on one hundred square meters.Almost all of MIAKRO's work is mechanized. Feeders for hay, automatic drinkers, feeders, working due to the laws of gravity. Filling it all out won't take more than 40 minutes.
Think about the cold season in advance. Your target is +10 °C. If the temperature is lower, a heater is needed. One heat consumes 30 watts.
Further It will be beneficial to refine the related workshops:
This includes the income and expenses that we will receive by raising rabbits.
Answering a list of questions basic expenses:
TOTAL: 230.000 - 370.000 rubles per year.
On average, such a farm pays off in 8 to 10 months.
Calculate income:
TOTAL: 460.000 - 535.000 rubles.
This is only for the first year of operation!
Like any other business, you need to open your farm in stages.
The choice of the form of farming must be balanced and responsible. Despite attractive subsidies and promises from the state, experienced rabbit breeders still choose individual entrepreneurship. This eliminates paperwork and "begging". Because a simple application for benefits and payments is not enough for officials. First you must prove to the commission that it is really needed. Gather a bunch of documents. And not the fact that in the end the result will be in your favor. And if they give money, then later you will have to account for every penny.
When choosing a site, we take into account indicators that will then save you from additional expenses.
Renting or buying land for farming? Of course, ideally, if the land is your property. This will help in the preparation of all kinds of documents, and in paying taxes and utility bills. And no one will drive you out of your land. In life, after all, anything can happen.
In addition to the mini-farms themselves, in animal care we will need:
By this point, you already know exactly what you will bet on. Therefore, when choosing a breed, be guided only by your opinion or the assessment of those you trust. Fur or meat? Depending on this, you collect your first starting group of eared ones. Sometimes rabbit breeders need more than one year to find what really suits them.
Meat breeds:
There should be 5 females per rabbit. Up to 8 rabbits are allowed.
Quality food, a balanced menu is the best way to gain weight! The rabbit table should include:
Minimum daily feed intake, per adult animal, in grams(Handbook of the rabbit breeder 1977):
The minimum daily feed intake for 1 young animal per day, in grams:
Daily ration for feeding young animals for meat, in grams:
Read more about how to feed rabbits.
And here is the main question that sooner or later begins to bother every farmer: where to sell products?
First option. If you work in the village, then by this time everyone has already heard about the possibility of buying meat, as they say, from the manufacturer. It is called " own customer base».
Pros:
Minuses:
Prices: if the average market price per kilogram of rabbit meat is 250-300 rubles. That from the farm can be sold at half price. 150-170 rubles.
Second option. You can agree on the supply of the most tender homemade meat in local restaurants, cafes and shops.
Pros:
Minuses:
Prices: small shipments are taken to local points. And for the opportunity to sell your products, for sure, they will ask for a discount. And greed has nothing to do with it, they just also expect to benefit. They can sell meat for 200 rubles/kg.
Third option. An alternative source of income is agricultural fairs.
Pros:
Minuses:
Rabbit houses in the yard could not surprise anyone before. Now the fashion for these animals is reborn again. More and more people prefer their own grown meat at home, without chemicals and monosodium glutamate.
Organizing a farm near the house is not such a bad idea.
Pros:
Minuses:
Pit- the natural refuge of the rabbit in nature. What could be more favorable?! Only here, if we consider rabbit breeding as a business, there are advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:
Flaws:
Those who have been doing it for a long time have long found means to minimize shortcomings.
As a rule, the exhibition brings together specialists of all levels. To do this, they are arranged to select and breed only purebred animals. They alone are the key to the success of any business.
Communication is very important here. Questions and problems of rabbit breeding are solved at the exhibitions. Only the best representatives of the breed are brought to the exhibitions, as well as means for feeding, cages and much more.
Rabbit breeding is an attractive business. Rabbit meat has dietary properties and is in high demand, while this niche has not yet been filled. This business plan provides the information you need to start a mini rabbit farm.
Objective of the project: making a profit by breeding and selling rabbits.
The main benefits of rabbit breeding are:
The amount of initial investment is 450 000 rubles.
The break-even point is reached for 6 month of work.
The payback period is 12 months.
Average monthly profit of the 1st year of project implementation - 49 000 rub.
2. Description of the business, product or service
Creating your own rabbit mini-farm is a profitable direction. This type of business will provide you with a constant source of income all year round. Rabbit breeding is a business that can be started with a small investment and then scaled up as the business progresses.
Starting a mini rabbit farm is a business that does not require a lot of investment. If the land and facilities are owned, the launch of the project can become even more profitable.
For keeping rabbits, the most optimal is the use of a shed system. Shed is two cell batteries united under one roof. Due to the fact that cages in sheds are located in one place, this significantly saves building materials and time for their maintenance. Cages in sheds are set in two tiers, on both sides of the covered passage. In order to get more light and fresh air into the cages with rabbits, windows of 20 × 100 cm in size are made on their back walls, with removable hinged boards. The length of the shed can be arbitrary, height - 240 cm, width of the passage - 120-140 cm. The floor in the passage is concreted or asphalted with a slope towards the cages.
Standard cage dimensions:
The main commodity for sale is rabbit meat. Thus, one of the most important points is the choice of the breed of young animals. We recommend considering the main breeds:
To maximize profits, you can use additional sources of income:
3. Description of the market
According to Rosstat, over the past 10 years, the total number of rabbits has more than doubled. The average annual growth rate is 8%. The growth dynamics of the rabbit population is presented below.

These indicators indicate the growth of the rabbit breeding niche. Even during the crisis years, there is a positive trend. For the most successful entry into this market, you need to understand your target audience, as well as develop the most effective ways to promote products.
The target audience
Take care of the sales market in advance, conclude an agreement with shops, individual entrepreneurs who sell meat products.
In order not to be left with surpluses, a marketing plan must be thought out and calculated even before starting a business. The main buyers of rabbit meat are markets, supermarkets, private traders. Skins are often bought by fur ateliers and private fashion designers. An important factor in the success of sales is the proximity of megacities.
4. Sales and Marketing
At the first stage, friends and acquaintances can become your customers. Word of mouth will have an important effect here. If product quality and prices are competitive, then the number of customers will increase exponentially.
To ensure uninterrupted sales, it is necessary to establish relationships with wholesalers, shops, and restaurants.
To conclude a mutually beneficial long-term cooperation agreement, you need to deliver a trial batch of products, and then, if both parties are satisfied with everything, it is worth discussing further actions. Establish yourself as a reliable supplier by providing products on time under the contract with all the necessary sanitary documents.
Rabbit skins are more profitable to sell to fur factories and ateliers. However, you may also have acquaintances who can make rabbit fur products and sell them in clothing stores.
As for manure, natural organic fertilizers have always been and will be in price, but you won’t earn much money on manure due to small volumes. Biohumus is another matter. Biohumus is a liquid, highly concentrated fertilizer obtained as a result of manure fermentation in special, biogas plants. Such fertilizer, bottled in plastic bottles, is sold to shops and markets for summer residents.
The sale of rabbits as breeding material is possible after reaching their own optimal volume. To sell young animals, you can participate in exhibitions and also use word of mouth.
5. Production plan
The main goal of the project is to create a mini-farm and maximize its profits.

Legal registration of business:
6. Organizational structure
Staffing schedule:
The total number of employees is 1 person.
The key link in this type of entrepreneurial activity is the owner of the business. You yourself will need to learn and constantly be interested in the intricacies of this matter.
However, for permanent employment, it will be necessary to hire a farmer. Better if it was the person who lives next door. He must have minimal knowledge of rabbit breeding and be responsible for his work.
Main responsibilities of a farmer:
The salary is fixed depending on the region. In our business plan, we will consider an amount equal to 20,000 rubles.
7. Financial plan
Sales plan for the 1st year of the project, rub.
It is important to note that in the first 2 months after the launch of the project, incomes are at a minimum level, since in order to start selling meat, it is necessary for a new generation to be born and grow up. However, from the 3rd month, the sale of products begins and there is a steady intensive growth in income over the next 8-9 months. By the end of the first year, profit reaches its optimal value. To maintain performance at this level, you just need to maintain the already configured production process. If desired, you can scale the business and use part of the profits to expand production.
