ATTENTION: The solution to the spreading problem is buying or making a specialized poultry feeder.
This is a product that feeds chickens as the pan becomes empty. Any feeder consists of a hopper, where feed is poured and a tray from where the chickens peck it. The farmer pours the feed into the bunker, from where it automatically moves in portions to the feeding place.
The hopper should be tightly closed so that the chickens do not get to the feed and eat everything at once or scatter them around the chicken coop.
Having a farmer does not need to monitor the feeding time and go to the chicken coop 3-4 times a day to add a new portion.
Feeders are divided according to the feeding method:
Do-it-yourself feeders are made from plastic buckets and bottles, from wood and iron(how, including from a plastic 5 liter bottle?). But the most inexpensive, easy to use and durable are plastic PVC feeders, or sewer pipes.
Advantages:
IMPORTANT: Disadvantages of pipe feeders: the structure is easy to disassemble, but long pipes are difficult to wash under the tap and disinfect inside.
PVC pipe feeders are available: with holes, with cutouts and with a tee... The choice of feeding device depends on the size of the coop and the location of the bird cages.
If you are worried about how to make a do-it-yourself feeder from polypropylene, plastic and other types of pipes, then you can see the photo:
The choice of feeders in stores ranges from the simplest to high-tech devices with a timer and a feed scatter function.
The price for the simplest bunker feeders is about 500-1000 rubles, but for high-tech products you will have to pay 5000-6000 rubles. Feeder body material also affects the price... A feeder made of ABS plastic costs 6.5 thousand rubles. Powder coated steel 8.5 thousand rubles
In stores you can find feeders completely ready for installation and operation. They immediately have a container for food and a tray.
ADVICE: Or you can buy only a tray divided into sections to which you will need to adapt the bottle or can. They cost about 100 rubles. and are suitable for farms with a small number of chickens.
Better yet, make the feeder yourself from the materials at hand.... It will be much cheaper and will match the number of birds.
In order to make a feeder with cutouts or holes, you will need the following PVC parts and accessories:
For a tee feeder, you should purchase:
Fewer materials required for vertical hopper feeder:
The shape of the feeder is similar to the Latin letter L. The vertical pipe serves as a hopper for loading feed... The horizontal tube will be the feeding place:
Watch a video about the manufacture of PVC pipes with slots for chickens:
After fixing to the wall, any feeder is immediately ready for use.... The required amount of grain or compound feed is poured on top and the hole is closed with a plug so that garbage does not get into the bunker and the feed does not get wet during the rain.
Watch a video about a PVC pipe chicken feeder with a tee:
The tube feeder is very easy to use and saves a lot of time on the farm. But they are designed for the use of grain and feed.
But dry food alone is not enough for good nutrition of chickens.:
Enhanced nutrition in winter and moderate in summer, vegetables, fruits, herbs and mineral supplements are the basis for good health and high egg production of your pets.

Traditional chicken feeders are very ineffective and impractical in practice, as birds often climb into them, scatter feed, litter and eventually turn the dishes upside down. Poultry farmers have to constantly monitor the condition of the feeders and spend a lot of time cleaning them. Special devices will help to get rid of such problems - feeders from sewer PVC pipes, which can be made with your own hands. How? Let's consider.
Feeders made of PVC pipes have a number of advantages and are valued primarily for the availability of materials, low cost to create, high practicality, and the ability to create an individual model. By the type of installation, three types of feeders can be distinguished.
The suspended model is very convenient to use, since it excludes the possibility of chickens climbing into the middle, littering there, or, even worse, leaving excrement. Such devices are suspended in the hen house at a certain height from the floor and are attached to any wall using self-tapping screws, brackets or other fasteners.
The simplest version of a suspended "utensil for feeding" can be considered a product made of a wide plastic pipe, at least one meter long, and several plugs. To create it you need:
Did you know? The first feeders appeared in the 6th century. Bishop Cerf of Culross made special devices in the form of a box, into which he poured food for wild pigeons.
Wall-mounted feeders are comfortable enough, but you will have to tinker a little to fix them. To install such a system, you should use special brackets that are attached directly to the wall or grating bars.
To create a wall model, you need a PVC pipe with a diameter of at least 15 cm.You should also prepare 2 plugs, a tee and two small pieces of pipe 10 cm and 20 cm each.
The construction technology is simple:
Experienced poultry farmers and farmers in most cases prefer hanging or floor type feeders. Floor structures are characterized by:
The downside of a self-made "canteen for chickens" is its openness. Since the feed is not protected from above, debris, dirt, feathers, etc. can get into the feed.
To organize the simplest outdoor product, you should:
The finished structure is securely fixed in several places in the required place of the chicken coop.
Despite the fact that homemade bird feeders cannot boast of high aesthetic data, they do an excellent job with the task: they provide food for poultry for a long time.
We bring to your attention two variants of "utensils for feeding", which can be made without much effort, using a minimum of materials and time.
Did you know? Plastic is recognized as the best material for a feeder. It is lightweight, comfortable, easy to work with, not afraid of rust, resistant to moisture and quite durable.
For this option you will need:
The feeder device includes several stages:
Important! When organizing a "canteen for chickens" of any type, it is necessary to process all the edges of the product so that the birds cannot get hurt.
It is quite possible to build a bird feeder quickly and efficiently if you stock up on the following materials:
Are you planning to breed chickens and have you already built a chicken coop for them? Then it's time to take care of the rest - in particular, the feeder. It is easy to make, especially since you can use various materials. Consider the simplest and most common options for how to make a do-it-yourself chicken feeder.
You can make a feeder out of anything - for example, planks, crates, pipes, or plastic bottles. But regardless of the material chosen, one problem always arises - it is about mixing the feed. And if you use several feeders at the same time, then they will take up too much space. There is a way out of this situation, but we will talk about it a little later.
So, in order for the feeder to cope with its functions, you need to prepare for its construction in advance. First, decide on the dimensions of the structure and choose a place for it. In this case, it does not matter whether it will be located in the hen house or in the yard - all birds should have free access to it. Moreover, chickens should not be crowded or interfere with each other during feeding.
It should also be remembered that chickens need not only dry, but also wet feed (we are talking about mash). In the first case, hopper tanks in the form of a cylinder are perfect, in which the volume of feed is automatically replenished. For wet food, a trough in the form of a trough is more suitable, on top of which a "spinner" is installed, made of a bar.
Of course, the procedure for constructing a trough differs from a bunker-type feeder both in labor costs and in the complexity of the work. But modern equipment and materials greatly simplify the process, so there will be no particular difficulties.
Note! When constructing a feeder, one important rule must be adhered to: the structure must be stable, food must not spill out of it. Otherwise, there will be not only overspending of feed, but also violation of sanitary standards.
To make such an unusual bird feeder, you must prepare:
The further sequence of actions should look something like the following.
Table. Making a feeding trough from a cutting board
Steps, no. | Photo | Description |
---|---|---|
Step 1 | Take a funnel (preferably a plastic one) and trace its outer contours on the board. Try to do everything as accurately as possible. | |
Step 2 | Drill many holes within the circle you have drawn. It is important not to overdo it here, since the supply of dry food should be limited. | |
Step 3 | Take a pre-prepared transparent hose of the required diameter. Connect the hose to the end of the funnel, if necessary, you can use additional fasteners (for example, a clamp). | |
Step 4 | Take a plastic cup and punch a hole at the bottom as shown in the image. The diameter of the hole should be such that the end of the hose fits snugly and holds well. | |
Step 5 | Take the other end of the hose and place it in the hole you made. If not tight enough, seal the edges of the hole and the outside of the hose with sealant. | |
Step 6 | Next, you need to glue the funnel bell to the cutting board. To do this, treat the contour of the perforated circle with sealant. | |
Step 7 | Place a funnel over the circle and hold it in this position until the sealant is dry. | |
Step 8 | Connect one end of the hose to the cup and the other to the glued funnel. The funnel should be at the bottom of the board. |
When assembled, the feeder described above will look like this. You can add grain.
Note! The grain will be poured through a hose from the watering can into the cup itself. Also take care of the stability of the board, as chickens are more likely to sit on it.
This design can be considered automatic, since your participation in feeding the chickens will be minimal. Such a feeder can be purchased ready-made in the store, but it will not be cheap, so you can try to make it yourself. The manufacturing procedure is quite simple.
From consumables you will need:
After preparation, follow the instructions below.
Step 1. Take a plastic bucket and punch holes in the bottom of the bucket through which the food will pour out (as shown in the image below).
Step 2. Attach the sectional bowl to the bottom of the bucket using the screws.
Step 3. Fill a plastic bucket with grain or any other food, close the lid.
The advantage of this design is that it can be installed in almost any convenient place (put or hang). As it is consumed, the food will be automatically poured into the bowl based on its weight.
Nowadays, water is often stored in cheap plastic containers. Such bottles are, perhaps, in every home and they can be used to build a convenient feeder.
Step 1. Cut the bottle in half, make holes in the bottom half as shown in the image. The size of each hole must be large enough for the chicken head to enter freely (it is advisable to leave a small margin).
Step 2. Take the second bottle, cut the bottom out, then place the neck down inside the prepared cut. As a result, a few centimeters should remain between the neck and the bottom.
Step 3. Pour the grain inside, close the hole in the upper part with something. The disadvantage of this design is that in case of bad weather, it must be moved indoors, however, for placement inside the poultry house, this is the best option.
For chicks, you can make a similar design in smaller sizes using regular plastic bottles. The manufacturing technology will be the same.
If you do not have very many chickens, and only pieces of wood are used from scrap materials, then you can make the feeder described below. The latter is great for those cases when the owners do not have the opportunity to periodically add grain (in other words, this is also a bunker feeder). It is not difficult to make such a structure, the main thing is to clearly follow the instructions below.
First, prepare the following supplies and equipment:
After that, proceed directly to manufacturing.
Step 1. Start by creating a drawing, then transfer it to the tree, laying out the elements of the required dimensions:
Step 2. Cut out all the elements carefully.
Step 3. Make holes for the screws in the required places using an electric drill.
Step 4. Sand all surfaces to keep them smooth and safe for birds.
Step 5. Use screws to assemble all the elements into a single structure. You can use a clamp to achieve maximum tightness. It is also important that the back and front walls are attached at a 15 ° angle.
Step 6. Attach the cover to the backs of the side panels using the hinges.
Step 7... It is also advisable to treat the feeder with an antiseptic. Neither paint nor varnish can be used.
Note! The finished structure will turn out to be roomy and comfortable, the food, protected from moisture, will be gradually fed in automatic mode. In addition to laboriousness, no shortcomings were noticed anymore.
Another simple option is a feeder made in the form of a small trough. It is suitable for those who have a large number of chickens and have a shed in case of precipitation.
To work you will need:
Step 1. First, make a drawing of the future structure. Determine with extreme precision all the elements, their dimensions and the installation location of the fasteners. This is the most crucial stage, which will help to avoid possible errors and inconsistencies.
Sawing the end walls is the most difficult step. For a better idea, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the image below.
Step 3. In accordance with the drawn drawing, cut out each of the elements.
Note! The bottom should be thick and heavy enough to prevent birds from overturning the structure. The height of the walls should be comfortable for chickens.
Step 4. Connect all the elements together. Try not to leave gaps, as food can spill out through them. Additional processing of wood is not required, moreover, if desired, this structure can be modified for your own needs.
The advantages of such a feeder include durability and strength, as well as versatility with regard to the type of feed used (the latter can be either dry or wet). As for the shortcomings, there is only one - the feeder needs minimal care.
The next option is primarily intended for dry food (although you can use various mash mixtures). Ideal for small spaces, since the second tier compensates for the lack of free space. For work, you will need self-tapping screws and bars.
Step 1. First, prepare all the elements of the feeder. The main one will be the lower tier, which should be 25 centimeters high and 26 centimeters wide. As for the length, it depends on the number of birds.
Step 2. Make special grooves into which the shutter will be inserted.
Step 3. The second floor will be a small trough with a board height of 10 centimeters. Install the second floor on the ends of the first, and then attach with loops.
An easy-to-implement option that requires minimal cost and effort. PVC pipes are sold everywhere and are inexpensive. For manufacturing, use one of the methods below.
For the construction of this structure, take care of the following consumables:
The 60 cm pipe will be installed horizontally and will serve for feeding the pizzas. Another pipe is installed vertically and is needed to feed the grain. Start by punching a longer hole in the pipe, although one big hole is often made instead, through which the birds will peck the grain.
Step 1. On a 60 cm pipe, draw holes 7 cm in diameter and with the same pitch.
Step 2. Saw out the traced holes.
Step 3. Place a plug on one end of the pipe.
Step 4. Install an elbow on the other end, and into it, in turn, insert another pipe.
Step 5. Fix the resulting structure in the poultry house, preferably in two or three places at once, so that it holds well.
After each filling of grain, put on a second plug on top so that debris does not get inside. The described design is also a bunker, so the feed can be added only once or twice a day.
In this case, manufacturing will require:
Step 1... Take a 20-centimeter pipe and put a plug on one end of it. This will be the bottom of the trough.
Step 2... Put a tee on the other end of this pipe so that the side elbow is pointing up.
Step 3... Insert the small tube into the side hole.
Step 4. Insert the longest pipe into the third hole in the tee. Here, as in the previous method, after each filling of feed, the pipe must be closed with a plug.
There are other ways to make a PVC pipe bird feeder, which experienced poultry farmers tell about in the video below.
A cheap and easy way to make a bird feeder.
For work, prepare:
Step 1. Clean and dry the canister thoroughly.
Step 2... Using a knife or any other tool, cut about 5 holes on the sides. The diameter of the holes should be somewhere between 6-7 centimeters so that the head of the chickens fits freely in them.
Step 3... Make a hole in the upper part for filling the grain and attach the pipe on top (the diameters must match). This will prevent birds from crawling inside.
To protect against rain and debris penetration, you can additionally take care of a pipe cover.
Don't throw away your old CD container - it can still serve you for feeding your chickens!
In order to build such a structure, prepare:
Step 1... Clean and dry the container, then cut three or four 2x2 centimeters holes on its walls near the rim.
Step 2... Fill the container with food, close the top with a bowl.
Step 3. Turn the container and bowl over and place in the desired location.
Note! Make sure that there are no sharp corners at the cuts that could hurt chickens.
Also note that this design is not durable and is designed for a small number of birds.
The video below shows another interesting option - a structure that opens under the weight of a chicken.
This is not a complete list of possible options - the article describes only the most popular of them. Having shown ingenuity and imagination, you can come up with your own design, the main thing is that the product turns out to be durable and safe for feathered pets.
All feeders can be divided into three types according to the method of feeding:
Craftsmen make chicken feeders from almost everything that catches your eye. The materials are boards, plywood, a variety of plastic bottles, food containers, PVC pipes and much, much more.
The choice of material depends on what kind of feed will be put into it:By location, the feeders are divided into:
The choice of the type of feeder depends on the breed and age of the chickens. How much time the poultry farmer will spend on servicing the bird depends on the way the feed is fed into the feeder. The more automated the process, the faster the pets will be fed.
According to the method of filling with food, the feeders are divided:
To make bird feeders with your own hands, you will need: a ruler, tape measure, jigsaw, screwdriver, knife, screws or nails. There are options, both simpler and more complicated.
Such a feeder will serve as an interesting decoration for a walking yard. To make the feeder, take a thick wooden chopping board, a funnel, a transparent hose with a diameter of 15 mm, a sippy bowl from a pet store.
Stages of work:
The grain is laid out on the board, through the holes it enters the hose and fills the feeder.
To make such a feeder, you will need a plastic bucket with a lid and a sectional bowl for feeding animals.
On a note!
Instead of a plastic bucket, you can use an enamel can or any other closed container.
To make such a feeder, you will need two 19-liter bottles.
In a similar way, a chicken feeder is made from one and a half liter bottles.
To make such a feeder, you will need a tall CD container and a large plate.
Stages of work:
To make such a feeder, take a plastic canister.
Stages of work:
To make such a feeder, they take a five-liter bottle from under drinking water and a bowl with low sides.
The feeder is designed for floor use.
Several variants of hopper feeders can be assembled from a sewer pipe with a diameter of 110 mm.
How to do:
Take a piece of pipe 500 mm long. A tee with an outlet at 45 degrees is put on the lower end (the tee is put on with the outlet up). On the lower end of the tee, put on a connecting sleeve, closed from below with a plug. The resulting structure is placed on the floor with a tee down, then fastened to the wall with clamps.
To make a bunker wooden feeder, take plywood 100 mm thick or boards 20 mm thick.
On a note!
The length of the feeder is chosen based on the number of inhabitants in the house.
With the help of a simple lever device, the bunker feeder can be equipped with the simplest automation that opens the cover of the bunker chute. The principle of operation of the automatics is simple: the chicken approaches the feeder with a closed tray lid, steps on the step located in front of the feeder. The weight of the chicken causes the step to move downward, thereby lifting the hopper lid through a system of levers.
A feeder of this type is installed to save space in small rooms. Structurally, the two-story feeder differs from the bunker feeder by the tray installed on top. In terms of the manufacturing method and the materials used, such a feeder is similar to a bunker one.
For the manufacture of a wooden tray feeder, boards with a thickness of 20-25 mm are used. The feeder is a long wooden box. The width of the box is 10-15 centimeters, the height of the walls is 8-10 centimeters, the length depends on the type of feed and the amount of poultry.
Tray feeders are installed on the floor or hung on the wall of the house. In order to prevent chickens from getting into the feeder with paws, a bar is attached to the top of the floor feeder.
The PVC pipe trough is manufactured in a suspended version. Take a pipe with a diameter of 110 mm and a length of 1 meter. A plug is put on one end of the pipe, and a bend with an angle of 87 degrees is placed on the other. A slot 7-10 centimeters wide is made along the entire pipe.
On a note!
Sometimes, instead of slots, round holes are made, the feeder looks much more aesthetically pleasing, but it is almost impossible to rinse it from dirt and mold. Therefore, round holes in such a feeder are impractical.
Conclusion
There are many options for making your own feeders, it's easy to make them. The main thing is that they are comfortable, hygienic and safe for chickens.
July 22, 2016If you decide to breed chickens, one of the main tasks that must be solved is feeding them. If you use ordinary dishes for this, for example, a trough, then the grain will have to be constantly poured, since the chickens will quickly eat it and scatter it around the chicken coop. Below I will tell you how to make a feeder from a sewer pipe without much time and money.
It should be noted that resourceful farmers have come up with many options for making feeders from various materials at hand. In particular, there are several types of structures made of PVC sewer pipes. Next, we will consider a few simple, and at the same time the most interesting options:
So, in order to make a vertical feeder with your own hands, you need to prepare the following materials:
In addition, you will need a tool for cutting plastic. For these purposes, you can use a hacksaw for metal.
As mentioned above, the manufacturing instructions are extremely simple:
This completes the manufacturing process. Now it only remains to securely fix the product, for example, you can attach it with clamps to a post or mesh. At the same time, the chickens will peck the grain from the side hole.
If you make a small diameter metal coil, you can make a moonshine still from a sewer pipe.
The feed poured into such a structure is enough for fifteen to twenty broilers or thirty layers for at least a day. At night, the top of the trough should be covered with a lid so that debris does not fall there.
In order for the chickens to feel good in the hen house, it is necessary to provide them not only with feeding, but also with an influx of fresh air.
For this, ventilation ducts can be made from sewer pipes with a diameter of 50 mm.
Of the tools, in addition to the hacksaw, you will need a drill and a jigsaw.
This construction is made in the following sequence:
Of course, this work can be simplified by cutting off part of the upper wall, however, in this case, there is a risk that chickens will sit on the structure and scatter grain;
Horizontal sewer pipes can also be used to make a hydroponic plant for growing plants. To do this, you need to make holes in them, as in the photo.
The principle of operation of this feeder is similar to the previous one, and it is designed for the same number of birds.
Finally, let's look at how a bunker feeder is made. It is perfect for broilers over two weeks old. To make it, we need the following materials:
The manufacturing process of this structure looks like this:
This completes the work. The only thing, so that the chickens do not turn it over, should make a hole in the upper part of the canister, thread a rope through it, and tie it to a carnation in the wall, near which there will be a feeder.
A six-liter hopper is usually sufficient for thirty broilers per day. Thus, you only have to put grain into the canister once a day.
Finally, I note that the advantage of feeders lies not only in the fact that the process of feeding the chickens is simplified, but also in the fact that they get used to stable feeding, as a result of which they stop crowding around food and knock each other down. Very quickly after installing such a structure, they stop fighting for food and come up one by one.
Making a feeder out of plastic pipes, as you have seen, is not at all difficult. Also in this article I wanted to show that this material can be found in many other uses in the household. Some craftsmen even make a cyclone from sewer pipes to collect garbage and dust, so you should not throw away the rest after repair.
You will find more information in the video in this article. If some aspects of making a feeder are not completely clear to you or if you have other questions, ask them in the comments, and I will be happy to answer you.
