Writing Test

Today, there are three main reasons why a decision is made to pass the international language exam in English. Some do it for employment or enrollment to study abroad. Others thus confirm the level of proficiency for the Russian employer, who is increasingly asking for a language certificate. Finally, still others take a test to test their own knowledge and to improve it in the preparation process.

Be that as it may, the most popular language tests not only in Russia, but all over the world are IELTS, TOEFL, and TOEIC, which, however, stands apart. Let's take a closer look at their features, similarities and differences.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

This is the British version of the language test, which is divided into two types: an academic module (for applicants) and a general module (for those leaving for permanent residence in New Zealand, Canada and Australia). Knowledge is graded on a scale of 0 to 9 for each section of the exam (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking). For example, for admission to a foreign university, you need to get at least 7 points (the arithmetic mean for four sections), and to obtain a residence permit - from 5 to 7.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

This test assesses knowledge of American English and also consists of four blocks. Unlike IELTS, TOEFL scores are cumulative. The maximum you can score is 120 points. The TOEFL certificate is required for admission to American and Canadian universities, as well as for admission to MBA programs.

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication)

The main feature of TOEIC is that it certifies the language level of an examiner for employment abroad. There are two types of this exam. The first is a two-hour TOEIC Listening & Reading that assesses the examiner's respective competencies. The highest score for this test is 990, the total number of multiple choice questions is 200. The second type is TOEICSpeaking & Writing with a maximum score of 400 points (200 for each stage). 20 minutes for speaking and 60 minutes for writing. If you wish, you can take only the Speaking section.

Differences between IELTS and TOEFL

First, these tests have different forms of delivery. The IELTS test is taken on paper within two days (a total of 2 hours 45 minutes). The TOEFL test is taken electronically in one visit and lasts 4 hours.

Secondly, IELTS assumes live communication with the examiner in the Speaking section, while in the same TOEFL section, speech is recorded on a phonorecord. Therefore, IELTS is more suitable for those who have no fear of communicating with a native speaker. The TOEFL also excludes the human factor.

Third, the difference lies in the content of the Listening section. In IELTS, the examiner can immediately familiarize himself with the list of questions before listening to the audio recordings. In TOEFL, questions appear after playing audio clips.

Fourth, one of the tasks in the IELTS writing part involves describing a table or graph. The TOEFL feature is that the examinee must write an essay based on the results of reading the text and listening to the recording.

Dates of validity

All three certificates are valid for two years, after which they must be obtained again. It is noteworthy that the TOEIC can be retaken only after six months, while IELTS can be retaken after three months, and TOEFL - after a month.

You can prepare for each of the listed exams at LEXICON Studio. School teachers - certified native teachers - will teach strategies for successful delivery and help you achieve maximum results in a relatively short time.

TOEIC - Test of English for International Communication- an English language proficiency test aimed at candidates who wish to obtain a position in an English-speaking international firm. The structure of the TOEIC test is very similar to the structure of the TOEFL exam, but the main difference between them is their purpose.

The exam allows you to determine a person's ability to competently conduct presentations, business meetings and negotiations in English. The TOEIC certificate is essential for those wishing to build a successful career in international business.

In total, you can get from 10 to 990 points for the Listening & Reading exam. The gradation scale is as follows:

    What are the registration rules?

    • If the candidate does not appear for the exam, in this case the amount paid by him will not be refunded.
  • Parsing the test structure
  • Before you start preparing for the exam, you should familiarize yourself with its structure. If the candidate sets himself the goal of passing the reading and listening test, then more practice should be done in completing tasks to improve the skills of reading and understanding English texts. To cope with the exam tasks, you need to find examples of tests from previous years. They will help you understand how to approach the solution of typical problems.
  • Goal setting
  • Setting a goal is important in any endeavor, and taking the TOEIC test is no exception. You should initially decide what result will be sufficient in order to get the desired position or enter a business school. For example, for employment in an international company, you need to score at least 800 points, and for admission to a university - from 600 points. The main thing is to set realistic goals for yourself.
  • Preparation of the curriculum
  • Often, students postpone test preparation for the last days or weeks, which is the main reason for the failure of the exam. It does not matter when exactly the registration for the TOEIC exam was passed, the main thing is that preparation for the test should begin as early as possible. You should immediately decide on the method of preparation. Some people prefer to study on their own, while others like to work in a team under the supervision of a teacher. It is advisable to do both. If there is no opportunity to attend preparatory courses, you need to make sure that the selected training materials have available explanations for the answers. The top five tutorials include: 600 Essential Words for the TOEIC from Barrons, Kaplan TOEIC, Barron's TOEIC Test with Audio CDs, Longman Preparation Series for the New TOEIC and Cracking the TOEIC with Audio CD.
  • Reasonable timing
  • Initially, it is worth identifying your weaknesses; this can be done using a trial test. The test consists of several parts, each of which needs time to prepare. But do not be too zealous on one block of tasks, you need to evenly distribute the load and pay more attention to your weak points. It is advisable to divide the study week into several sections, for example, on one day, work on tasks for checking vocabulary, and on the other day, for honing writing skills, etc.
  • Expanding vocabulary
  • Limited vocabulary is one of the main reasons for failing an exam. In order not to fail, you should create a dictionary in order to write down unfamiliar words that come across in the preparation process. Why you shouldn't learn words purposefully? Because it is ineffective. A person memorizes a new word better in any context. It is advisable to write down the sentence to which it refers to the dictionary together with the word. At the end of each week, you can summarize - repeat all new words and write small essays with them. TOEIC has a business focus, so it is important to learn business vocabulary related to work, travel, events, etc.
  • Trust your intuition
  • The test may contain questions, the answers to which seem to be right and wrong at the same time. In this case, you should trust your intuition. It's not a good idea to change your answer several times, as it takes extra time and is an unaffordable luxury on an exam. Better to focus on new assignments. You can return to difficult questions of the test later (we are talking about the paper version of the test).
  • Literal translation
  • Of course, unfamiliar words will be encountered more than once in the test, so there is no need to translate absolutely everything, there is no time for this, you need to be able to guess the meaning of a word based on the context. It is not allowed to use the dictionary while taking the exam.
  • Guessing the answer
  • You should not leave the question unanswered, it is better to just guess it. This is not prohibited by the rules of the exam; points are not deducted for guessing the answer, as in the SAT test.
  • Save time
  • Do not sit too long on one section, you need to learn how to properly allocate time for the exam. The goal of each candidate is to complete all the tasks of the test at any cost. There may be time at the end of the exam to return to difficult questions.
  • Listen fast
  • In the process of preparing for the test, you should hone your listening skills. During the exam, you will not be able to listen to the question again or rewind the recording. You need to learn to grasp the meaning of what is said the first time. There is also very little time allotted for the answer, so you should not think about the previous question when the announcer starts to announce the next one.
  • Reading aloud
  • Fluency in English is an essential skill that needs to be practiced daily. Reading English literature aloud will help to improve the perception of speech, to feel the rhythm of the language. It is advisable to read modern newspapers, magazines, brochures, publications related to business topics. It is equally important to hone your speaking skills, for this you can listen to TV shows and even lectures from the best universities in the world, which are freely available on the Internet. It is important to learn exactly real English, which is used by modern people in their daily business communication.
  • Sample tests
  • There are a lot of practice tests on the net that you can take absolutely free of charge. This is a chance to find out your current level of knowledge and identify your strengths and weaknesses. It is advisable to take a practice test before and after preparation to compare the results. There are mock tests that are compiled by the creators of the exam. This is another opportunity to understand the structure of TOEIC and learn how to solve common problems.
  • Learning with a native speaker
  • Even if the candidate does not have the financial ability to pay for lessons with an individual tutor, you can use the services of international services for learning foreign languages, in which people from all over the world are ready to teach their native language to other visitors of the resource for free. On one of these sites, you can meet a native English speaker who wants to learn Russian. This is a great opportunity to make new friends and improve your English.
  • Learning new material without cramming
  • It is a huge mistake to review new material the night before an exam. During this time, you need to get a good rest, get enough sleep before the test and let your brain relax. In the morning, you need to eat a hearty meal so that you do not think about delicious food during the exam. The week before the exam should be devoted to reviewing the material studied.
  • Victory over excitement
  • Often, examinees are overcome with doubts about their knowledge and strength before passing the test. Excitement and outright panic can overtake at any moment, which will certainly affect the exam results. It is important to mentally tune yourself to a positive wave, after all, this is not the last chance in life, and you can retake the test at any time. It is advisable to register for the exam several months before the desired job or enrollment in business school, so that in case of failure, you will be able to retake the test.
The TOEIC test does not require the candidate to know a specific vocabulary in any particular area, for example, in finance or economics. The exam assesses a candidate's general willingness to communicate in a business environment. This is its complexity. The exam tasks cover the widest possible range of topics: from team communication and writing service notes to company budget planning, shopping and travel.
The exam may come across questions related to reserving a table in a restaurant, holding a corporate event or renting a room. Therefore, TOEIC preparation courses can fit even a person who speaks English at an advanced level.
Thousands of organizations around the world trust the TOEIC exam results. It doesn't matter what goals the candidate pursues - employment in an international company, continuing education abroad, attending an international training, the TOEIC certificate opens any door. Moreover, passing the exam will be a great addition to your resume in English.

A few secrets to preparing and taking the TOEIC

At first, formulate the goal correctly. If you need test results for employment in a particular company, find out the minimum passing score. Most companies require at least 600 points, but if you want to take up a management position, you may need 800 points for TOEIC.

Secondly, analyze the test structure and identify your strengths and weaknesses. If all is not well with written speech, practice it. And vice versa: there are problems with the speaking part - improve your speaking skills. You should also pay attention to the preparation for the exam format, try to answer the questions on time, count the minutes.

Thirdly, choose a training course. You can prepare yourself or with a teacher on courses, the main thing is that you need to devote time to preparation regularly, without delaying until the last week before the test.

Fourth, improve your vocabulary. It is often because of the limited vocabulary that students take the test for a low score.

Fifth, try to learn how to identify distracting answers in the test. Each test question has two distracting answers that should take you away from the correct one. Homonyms, words with a similar meaning can confuse you. Remember this.

At sixth, you do not need to translate everything. The meaning of many words or phrases can be guessed from the context. If you translate everything thoroughly, you may not have enough time to complete the rest of the assignments.

Seventh, read aloud as you prepare for the test. In this way, you not only develop listening and reading skills, but also develop pronunciation.
