What does the birth of the blessed virgin Mary mean? What date and how is the feast of the Nativity of the blessed virgin Mary celebrated?

The Orthodox holiday Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos means a great triumph of faith and the appearance to the World of the Mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Lord. Her appearance on the Light of God was a miracle, as well as the Immaculate Conception that revealed the Savior to the World.

Celebration history

But in the Russian Orthodox Church there is a widespread version, which was universally adhered to by St. Demetrius of Rostov, that Her birth of God happened in Nazareth, where her parents Joachim and Anna lived.

Birth of the Virgin

So ... To the north of Jerusalem, in the mountainous region near the Ezdrelon Valley, lay the small town of Nazareth. This city, like its inhabitants, was not famous for anything significant, therefore, among the Jews there was an opinion that nothing good could come from Nazareth.

But a married couple lived in this town, it was their God who chose to be the parents of the Mother of the Savior of the World. A native of the royal family and the daughter of the high priest, Joachim and Anna, were wealthy people, had wealth, servants and households. But this did not prevent them from reverently treating each other, leading a God-fearing life, and showing deeds of mercy. For these qualities, the townspeople loved the pious Christian family very much.

Other holidays of Christmas:

But the spouses were very depressed by the absence of children, moreover, in those days it was a sign of God's punishment (anger). But the spouses did not grumble, they constantly begged for the gift of joy in life in the form of a long-awaited baby, although in their advanced years the birth of a child, in principle, was no longer possible.

The virgin and her parents

Angel's message

Once Joachim retired into the wilderness in order to pray earnestly and keep a strict fast. The righteous wife, admitting the guilt of the mischief, grieved greatly and began to pray even more fervently to God for the gift of a child. And then a miracle happened - the Angel of the Lord descended from Heaven and announced to her that the Creator had heard the prayer and that conception would soon take place, from which a daughter, blessed, above all earthly daughters, would be born in the family, and ordered to give her the name Mary.

The same Angel appeared to Joachim. He announced to him the imminent birth of his daughter. In response, the righteous husband promised that if it happens that Anna will give birth to a daughter, he will certainly give her to the service of God.

The righteous went to Jerusalem, where Anna was waiting for him at the golden gates, and together they returned to Nazareth. And after the expiration of the gestation period, the woman gave birth to a daughter, whom her parents named Mary, as the Angel ordered.

Joachim arranged a grand feast, to which many people were summoned. During the feast, the father raised his Daughter and asked the priests to bless her.

The meaning of the holiday

It was at a time when the world was experiencing a severe decline in moral values and there was a great need for the revival of faith that the Blessed Virgin was born. It was She who was chosen by the Creator to be the most worthy of those worthy in order to be the Mother of God and to reveal to the world in the image of the human nature of the son of God.

About other feasts of the Mother of God:

The birth of Mary brought the earthly world closer to the Kingdom of God, to the knowledge of the truth and eternal life in Christ. And the Mother of God herself was destined to be the merciful Intercessor of Orthodox Christians.

How the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin is celebrated

Since the 6th century, believers rush to churches, where solemn services are performed. People praise God and the day when the Lord gave the world in the form of the Most Pure Virgin hope for the coming of the Savior into the world.

The hostesses baked bread with the letters "R" and "B", which meant "The Nativity of the Mother of God." They were distributed to all family members, relatives, friends, and kept under the icon of Jesus Christ, until the day of His Nativity. It was believed that by eating a piece of this bread with prayer, it is possible to recover from all kinds of ailments.

In the Holy Land, Jerusalem and Nazareth on these holidays become the center of pilgrimage. A huge stream of believers flows to the shrines associated with the earthly life of the Queen of Heaven. People especially tend to visit the source of the Virgin Mary and the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin in Nazareth, the Greek Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Jerusalem. According to Tradition, it was built on the site where the house of Mary's parents used to stand.

On this day, Heaven hears all the prayers of Orthodox Christians, therefore it is necessary to repent of sins, thank the Creator and prayerfully ask for the fulfillment of what is asked.

  • Childless women attend the festive divine service, after which they arrange a dinner and invite the poor to the table, so that after eating they pray for the hostess who dreams of gifting a baby. • The day of the Nativity of the Virgin began the countdown of matchmaking: from that day matchmakers were sent to the homes of unmarried girls. On this day, it is just as good to play a wedding - the family will always be under the Protection of the Queen of Heaven.
  • From ancient times to the present day, there is a tradition: women went to the reservoir early in the morning. It is believed that if a girl or woman washes her face before sunrise, then the beauty of her face will be preserved until old age. Of course, there is something pagan about it, but there is no harm whatsoever.
  • From the week of Christmas, the housewives removed the onions from the beds, and before it began, it was necessary to remove all other crops from the fields. The villagers sowed the fields with rye, and the beekeepers prepared the hives for wintering.

But the high priest did not accept the gifts of Joachim, accusing him of sins, for which the Lord punishes with childlessness. Saddened, Joachim did not return home, but went into the wilderness, where his flocks were grazing. Anna, learning about what had happened in the temple, was also saddened. However, they did not murmur against the Lord, but fervently prayed, asking for His mercy. Their prayer was answered by the Lord. According to legend, to Joachim in the desert, and to Anna in the garden, there was an angel's appearance with the joyful news that they would have a daughter. Jesus Christ (this house, built by Wisdom - the Mother of God, the Most Holy Virgin Mary, in which the Lord has moved).

In honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a church was consecrated in the Perynsky skete near Veliky Novgorod. The Perynsky Nativity of the Mother of God male skete is a monastery located in the Novgorod tract of Peryn and operating from the XIV century to 1764. It is mentioned in the annals for the first time in 1386, when the Novgorodians burned down the monastery. On Peryn in 995, a wooden church of the Nativity of the Virgin was built, which stood for about two hundred years; practically nothing is known about her. At the same time, the monastery was probably founded, although for the first time in the chronicles it was mentioned in 1386 in the list of monasteries. The stone building of the church in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin dates back to the 30s of the XIII century. The church has a three-blade covering, fragments of fresco painting in the lintels of the drum trench openings. Slightly tapering upward walls, blades, windows, the drum of the church enhance the effect of lightness and aspiration upward. There are three spacious entrances inside the building. They and the widely spaced slender dome pillars contribute to the fact that even with a small size, the church gives the impression of a spacious, high structure. The basis of the building that has come down to us is the masonry of the pre-Mongol period - a combination of limestone and thin brick-plinths, laid on a lime mortar, with an admixture of brick chips (cement). The cross that crowns the church is the so-called "domed cross with a crescent", a typical form for the pre-Mongol period, which comes from the "blossoming cross" or "vine cross". Currently, the monument has been restored in its original form.

For the first time, the monastery is mentioned in the Pskov chronicle of the late 13th century, according to which on March 4, 1299, the monastery that already existed by that time was burned during the attack on Pskov by the Livonian knights. In the XIV-XV centuries, the Snetogorsk monastery became the main spiritual and monastic center of Pskov. The main shrine of the monastery, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was built in 1311. The interior of the cathedral is designed in the form of an equal-pointed cross with volumes adjoining it at the corners of smaller volumes. In accordance with the internal structure of the interior, the side facades of the temple are asymmetrical. Their eastern spans are decorated with high arches corresponding to the height of the branches of the cross. Here are the side portals of the temple, above them there are niches-icon cases and windows intended for painting. The bottom of the western spans are decorated with low arch-niches, corresponding to the lower tier of the western corner rooms. The eastern façade, with its three apses, has largely retained its original shape. The western façade, which originally ended with three zakomaras, is currently closed by the additions to the temple that have arisen in the following centuries. The cathedral is completed by a dome placed in the center of the inner cross, the drum of which is decorated on the outside with an unusual belt of pointed arches, restored during the restoration. In the 15th century, the drum of the dome was raised, and the arched belt was replaced by ribbons of runner and curb. The shape of the roof has changed several times during the history of the cathedral. Initially, the temple was covered with a plank in the shape of a zakomar, and the head of the dome was covered with a wooden ploughshare-scales. In the 16th century, triangular tongs were put on top of the semicircular zakomars, the head of the dome was made bulbous. After 1920, the destruction of the monastery began. The territory of the monastery was occupied by a rest house. In 1934, the Ascension Church-bell tower was partially destroyed. During the Great Patriotic War, the headquarters of Army Group North was located here. The territory and buildings of the monastery were arranged well for German officers. At the same time, a meeting room was arranged in the Nikolskaya Church, a wine warehouse and a shooting gallery in the cathedral, and a garage in the ruins of the Ascension Church. In the post-war period, a rest house and a children's sanatorium continued to exist. In 1993, the buildings of the Snetogorsk monastery were transferred to the Pskov diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.

In honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Sofroniev-Molchanskaya Pechersk Hermitage was consecrated in the village. New Sloboda of the Sumy region of Ukraine. According to legend, in the fall of 1405, a miraculous icon of the Most Holy Theotokos appeared on the Wonderful Mountain, above the Molche swamp. The locals immediately noticed the shrine. On the site of the miraculous find, people erected a small wooden church of the Most Holy Theotokos. Over time, monks began to settle in her, building nearby caves on the hillsides for living and constant prayers. Subsequently, a small monastery arose here. It was called the Molchanskaya Nativity of the Virgin the wilderness. In the 16th century, the desert grew and turned into a large monastery-prison, so the monks who lived in it acquired several "siege yards", where they erected the Church of Saints Florus and Laurus, and in the 1580s, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin was erected in the prison. In 1605, the Sofronievsky Monastery was plundered by the army of False Dmitry I, heading for Moscow. The 17th and 18th centuries were the heyday of the Sofronievskaya Hermitage. Already in the early 1920s, the Soviet government closed the Sofronievsky Monastery. In the first post-war years, the ruins left over from the Sofronievsky Monastery began to be dismantled into bricks for pigsties, collective farm buildings and industrial facilities. So, bulldozers razed the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the ground, and in its place a plot for grazing collective farm cattle appeared. The revival of the monastery began in 1999.

In honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Molchansky Monastery in Putivl, Ukraine was consecrated. The history of the foundation of the Molchansky Monastery is closely connected with the Sofroniev Hermitage. In 1592 the Molchansk hermitage was burned by the Tatars, and in 1593 all the monks moved to Putivl, where there were several "sedimentary yards" and turned the monastery courtyard into a new Molchansk monastery. During 1602-1604, stone fortifications were built and the monastery became a real defensive outpost. The monastery served as a powerful fortress, in which the monks of the monastery and local residents have repeatedly found shelter. From November 18, 1604 to May 26, 1605 False Dmitry I used the monastery as his residence. It was at this time that the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin and other structures were built. Since the cathedral was being erected in the middle of a narrow fortified courtyard, built up on all sides, it was necessary to unite in its building a barn - in the basement and in the basement, the refectory and kitchen - in the basement, the cathedral and a warm church - on the second tier, a battle chamber with loopholes - on the third tier , above the altar. In the architectural plan of the building, there are three extraordinary features: the altar in the form of a square tower, not a semicircular apse; the defense chamber on the third tier of the altar is crowned with a tent; overlapping the nave basement with a system of cross vaults with a pillar in the middle. In 1605, the Molchansk Monastery was assigned to the Putivl Molcha'nsky Monastery, and a monastery apiary was set up on its territory. During the Civil War of the Time of Troubles, a fire broke out in the monastery, as a result of which the building was badly damaged. In 1653 the destroyed monastery was rebuilt. To avoid confusion, the monastery in Putivl began to be called the Bolshoi Molchansky Monastery, and the one restored over the Molcha swamp, the Malaya Molchansky Hermitage. The latter, from the end of the 17th century, began to be called the Sofroniev Hermitage, or the Sofroniev Monastery. From the end of the 17th century, the monastery, like the city of Putivl itself, began to gradually decline. In the post-revolutionary period, the monastery was closed, and the monks were dispersed. Since the 1930s, the territory and buildings of the monastery were occupied by an orphanage, vocational school, and a military plant. Since 1960, restoration work has been carried out in the monastery, and after 17 years the State Historical and Cultural Reserve was created here. In 1991 the monastery was transferred to the UOC.

September 21st Orthodox Christians remember Nativity of the Blessed Virgin... This event is the birth of the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ from the righteous parents of Joachim and is described in the Church Tradition. We will tell you about the history, meaning and folk traditions associated with the holiday.

What is the Nativity of the Virgin

The Nativity of the Most Holy Lady Our Lady and Ever-Virgin Mary is the full name of the holiday that the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates on September 21 in the new style (September 8 in the old style). This is one of . The twelve feasts are dogmatically closely connected with the events of the earthly life of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Mother of God and are divided into Lord's (dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ) and Theotokos (dedicated to the Mother of God). The Nativity of the Theotokos is a feast of the Theotokos.

The event that we celebrate on this day is not described in the New Testament. Knowledge about him came to us from Church Tradition, one of the sources of our doctrine, together with Holy Scripture.

The legend about the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, namely the Proto Gospel of Jacob, was written in the 2nd century. And they began to celebrate the holiday as a separate significant day by the second half of the 5th century. For example, we read about this in the Patriarch of Constantinople Proclus (439-446) and in the missal (liturgical book) of Pope Gelasius (492-426).

When the Nativity of the Virgin is celebrated

Orthodox Christians celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on September 21 New Style (September 8 Old Style). This is a non-passing holiday, that is, its date remains the same every year.

According to the Orthodox tradition, the holiday lasts 6 days, from September 20 to 25. This period includes forefeast and afterfeast. Forefeast - one or several days before a big holiday, the services of which already include prayers dedicated to the upcoming celebrated event. Accordingly, afterfeast is the same days after the holiday.

What can you eat at the Nativity of the Virgin

In 2018, the holiday falls on Friday, fast day, in honor of the holiday, believers are allowed to eat fish.

Events of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin

In the New Testament, we will find practically nothing about the earthly life of the Mother of God. The Gospels do not provide information about who the parents of the Virgin Mary were and under what circumstances she was born.

The Feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos is based on the Church Tradition. There is the so-called Proto Gospel of Jacob, written in the 2nd century. In it we read that Mary was born of pious parents, Joachim and Anna. Joachim came from a royal family, and Anna was the daughter of the high priest. They lived to a ripe old age and were childless. This was a source of grief for the couple and caused public censure.

Once, when Joachim came to the Temple, the high priest did not allow him to offer sacrifice to God, saying: "You did not create offspring for Israel." After that, the inconsolable Joachim retired into the desert to pray, while Anna stayed at home and also prayed. At this time, an angel appeared to both of them and announced to each: "The Lord heeded your prayer, you will conceive and give birth, and they will talk about your offspring in the whole world."

Having learned the good news, the couple met at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem.

After that, Anna conceived. As the Proto Gospel of Jacob writes, "the months allotted to her passed, and Anna gave birth in the ninth month." The righteous took a vow to consecrate their child to God and gave their daughter Mary to the Jerusalem temple, where she served until she came of age.

History of the celebration of the Nativity of the Virgin

Christians began to celebrate the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin only by the 5th century. We read the first mentions of him in the Patriarch of Constantinople Proclus (439-446) and in the missal (liturgical book) of Pope Gelasius (492-426). Saints John Chrysostom, Epiphanes and Augustine also write about the holiday. And in Palestine, there is a legend that the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Empress Helen built a temple in Jerusalem in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Icon of the Nativity of the Virgin

We meet the most ancient images of the events of the Nativity of the Mother of God by the X-XI centuries. These are icons and frescoes. For example, the painting of a 7th century Georgian temple in Ateni. This entire temple is dedicated to the Mother of God (the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos).

There are other ancient images of the holiday: frescoes in the Kiev Sophia Cathedral (first half of the 11th century) and in the Transfiguration Cathedral of the Mirozh Monastery (XII century), a composition in the Church of Joachim and Anna of the Serbian monastery Studenica (1304).

Traditionally, on early icons and frescoes, icon painters depicted righteous Anna, the mother of the Virgin Mary, in the center of the composition. The woman in labor reclining on a high bed, before her are women with gifts, a midwife and maids who wash the Mother of God in the font.

With each century, this icon-painting plot has been enriched with more and more new details. For example, they began to depict a table with brought gifts and treats, a pond, birds. Now the icon of the Nativity of the Virgin is often made hagiographic, that is, the main plot is supplemented with separate compositions (stamps) - scenes from the history of the event. The lamentation of Joachim in the wilderness, the gospel to Joachim and the evangelism to Anna, the meeting of the spouses at the Golden Gate of the Jerusalem Temple, and so on.

The painting of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin of the Ferapontov Monastery, which was completed in 1502 by the great icon painter Dionysius, has survived to this day. This is a fresco above the main entrance that depicts Saint Anne on a bed; font; wives and virgins who come to bow to the Born with vessels in their hands; Joachim and Anna with the Virgin Mary in their arms.

Divine service of the Nativity of the Virgin

In the 6th century, the Monk Roman the Sweet Songwriter wrote a kontakion for the Nativity of the Virgin, but its text has not survived to this day. The most ancient chant of the holiday is the troparion "Thy Nativity, Virgin Mary". Most likely, it was compiled in the 5th-7th centuries. In addition, the modern service of the holiday includes, for example, the hymns of St. Andrew of Crete (VII century), the Monk John Damascene VIII century), Patriarch Herman of Constantinople (VIII century).

First prayer for the Nativity of the Virgin

Oh, Most Holy Lady, Christ our Savior, God-chosen Mother, asked by God by holy prayers, dedicated to God and beloved by God! Who will not please You or who will not sing, Your Glorious Christmas. Your Christmas is the beginning of the salvation of people, and we, sitting in the dark of sins, see Thee, the Unapproachable Light of the dwelling. For this reason, a flowing language cannot chant Ty in its possession. Moreover, Thou art exalted, the Most Pure One, the Seraphim. Receive from the unworthy Thy servants the present praise and do not reject our entreaties. We confess your greatness, we fall to You in affection, and we boldly ask the child-loving and benevolent Mother to intercede quickly: pray Thy Son and our God to grant us, who sin a lot, sincere repentance and a pious life, so that we can do everything that is pleasing to God and useful to our souls. Let us hate all evil, strengthened by Divine grace in our good will. Thou shameless hope of ours in the hour of death, grant us a Christian end, a comfortable procession in the terrible ordeals of the air, and the legacy of the eternal and ineffable blessings of the Kingdom of Heaven, but with all the saints we ceaselessly confess Thy intercession for us and glorify the one True God, in the Holy Trinity we bow down to Father and Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Second prayer for the Nativity of the Virgin

Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of heaven and earth, to Your miraculous image, falling down, tenderly with the verb: look mercifully on Your servants and by Your omnipotent intercession sent down something that is necessary. Save all the faithful children of the Holy Church, convert the unfaithful, instruct those who have gone astray on the right path, support old age and weakness of strength, grow the youth in the holy faith, direct courage to good, bring sinners to repentance, and hear all Christians prayers, heal the sick, relieve sorrows, travel take a trip. Amen.

Amen.

Sermon by Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh at the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Every holiday of the Mother of God is pure joy. It is a joy not only about God's love for us, but also about the joy that the earth - our simple, dear, ordinary land - can respond to the love of the Lord in this way. This is a special joy for us.

When we receive mercy from God, our heart rejoices; but sometimes it becomes melancholy: how, how can I return love for love, where can I find that holiness, that affection, that ability to respond with all nature to the mercy of God? And then, although we know that each of us is weak and weak in love, we can think about the Mother of God. She answered for all of us with perfect faith, never wavering with hope and love so wide that She managed to embrace heaven and earth with this love, open up with love so that the Son of God was incarnate, and so open up with love for people that all, the most sinful, they can come to Her and receive mercy. This is the answer of the whole earth, this is the answer of the whole universe to the love of God.

And so, let us rejoice and take away joy today from this church - not only for one moment: we will preserve it from day to day, we will be amazed at this joy, we will rejoice with this joy and we will give this joy to people, so that every heart will rejoice and be comforted and enlightened with this joy that the earth can contain heaven, that man can answer God in such a way that God would become man.

And now, from century to century, while the world stands, God is among us, Christ is the same among us, from day to day. And when the glory of earth and heaven is manifested, revealed, the Lord Jesus Christ, true God, but also a true man, will be the Mother of God among us, Who gave Him flesh with Her love, faith, holiness, and reverence.

Let us preserve, cherish, grow this joy and live by it in the days of sorrow, in the dark days, in the days when it seems to us that we are not capable of anything, that the earth cannot respond to the love of God with anything. The earth answered, and this Answer stands forever with raised hands, praying for all of us, good and evil, never standing across the path of salvation, forgiving everyone - but She has something to forgive: after all, the people of Her Son killed - and to Her we we resort. Because if She forgives, then no one will condemn us.

With what faith we come to the Mother of God, how deep it must be so that each of us, who by his sins and his unworthiness participates in the death of the Lord, could say: Mother, I have destroyed Your Son, but You forgive. And he intercedes for us, and has mercy, and saves, and grows to the full growth of the love of the Lord.

Glory to God for this, glory to the Mother of the Lord for this love of Her. Amen.

Holy Righteous John of Kronstadt. Sermon on the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos

The righteous parents of the Ever-Virgin grieved for a long time about their infertility, long and fervently prayed to the Lord for the resolution of infertility, which was considered a punishment from God for sins; they did much alms in order to bow to the mercy of the All-Merciful, and endured insults from their fellow tribesmen, and in this sorrow and unceasing prayer and beneficence they were gradually purified in spirit and inflamed more and more with love and devotion to God and thus were prepared by the Providence of God for the blessed birth of the Most Blessed Blessedness , chosen from all generations to the Mother of the incarnate Word.

In a close and sorrowful way, the Lord leads to the glory and bliss of His chosen ones, for the Mother of God Herself in the flesh was predicted by Simeon that a weapon would pass through Her soul and She would experience grievous sorrows in her soul during the suffering life of Her Son, so that many people's hearts would open up ( Luke 2: 34-35). So mournful and cramped is the path of all God's chosen ones, for the world and the ruler of the world, that is, the enemy of God and men, extremely oppresses the people of God; and the Lord Himself allows them to walk the narrow path, since he helps them to strive to God and to place their trust in Him alone.

But let us look from sorrow to joy. What joy does the Nativity of the Mother of God give us? Let us explain in more detail the church song, which explains the reasons for the festive joy. Through the Nativity of the Ever-Virgin, through Her only-begotten Son and God, the cursed and rejected mankind was reconciled with God, immeasurably offended by their sins, for Christ became the Mediator of reconciliation (Rom. 5: 10-11), freed from curse and eternal death, was awarded the blessing of the Heavenly Father; it has united and merged with the Divine nature; raised into its first property by this dissolution, in the words of the church song; a previously rejected person was rewarded with adoption by the Heavenly Father, received the promise of a glorious resurrection and eternal life in heaven along with the angels.

All this has been accomplished and is being accomplished by the Son of God incarnate from the Most Pure Virgin from the Holy Spirit and by the intercession of His Most Pure Mother. How honored and exalted mankind through the holy Virgin Mary, for She was worthy of renewal and adoption by God; And She Herself was rewarded by Her immeasurable humility and the greatest purity and holiness to be the Mother of the God-man! She is always the most powerful Intercessor and Representative of the Christian clan before Her Son and God! She is our unashamed Hope; She removes from us the clouds of God's righteous anger, opens up to us the ancient paradise with Her mighty intercession; She upholds the thrones of kings and keeps them unshakable forever. She saved and is saving Russia a thousand times from the beginning to the present day; She exalted her, glorified her, confirmed and affirms her; She is the guarantor of sinners for salvation. To Her Christians turn their countless prayers, petitions, praises, praise and thanksgiving; She has performed and is performing in the Church countless miracles, beneficial in all parts of the world.

Let us all lightly celebrate the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, adorning ourselves with all sorts of Christian virtues. Amen.

House of Joachim and Anna

The House of Joachim and Anna is one of the Christian landmarks of Jerusalem. As Church Tradition says, the Virgin Mary was born in the house of her parents - the righteous Joachim and Anna. It was located in the northeastern part of Jerusalem, now it is the territory of the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, near the Lion Gate.

Orthodox and Catholics are still arguing about where exactly the house stood, and they built a monastery and a basilica at a distance of 70 meters from each other. The Orthodox monastery of St. Anna is a place of pilgrimage for many Christians around the world. On the first floor of the monastery there is a church in honor of the Nativity of the Mother of God, and under the building of the monastery there is an ancient cave. It is believed that this cave is part of the house of Joachim and Anna.

Church in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Vladykino

Church in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Vladykino- the spiritual center of the Moscow region Otradnoye. Address: Altufevskoe highway, building 4.

Vladykino is one of the most ancient villages near Moscow. The first owner of the village was the noble Prince Daniel of Moscow, the son of St. Alexander Nevsky and a direct descendant of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir and Princess Olga. In 1322, the village was granted to the patrimony of the thousand Protasius Velyaminov, who arrived at the service of the Moscow prince. From his name the village got its first name - Velyaminovo.

Three centuries later, in 1619, Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich granted Velyaminovo to Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky, but soon the village passed to Prince Ivan Ivanovich Shuisky. It was under him that a village church was built here in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos (instead of a dilapidated church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker).

After 1653, His Holiness Patriarch Nikon made the village his fiefdom and gave it a new name - Vladykino. In Vladykino, a patriarchal traveling palace and another temple are being built in honor of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God.

The first stone church in Vladykino was built in 1770. The bell tower was erected by Count K. G. Razumovsky, the owner of the neighboring village of Petrovskoye. By the middle of the 19th century, the stone church was badly dilapidated. In 1854, on the site of the old one, a new, this time three-altar, temple was built with the side-chapels of the Archangel Michael and the Archangel Gabriel. The main altar in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos was consecrated by Saint Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna.

During the Soviet years, the church was not closed, even during the most severe persecutions against the Church. During the Great Patriotic War, not a single shell hit him, although the Germans were very close. In the 70s, there were attempts to demolish the temple during the construction of an overpass at the beginning of the Altufevskoe highway, but the parishioners were able to defend it.

THE VIRGIN MARY

In 54 BC. Joseph, the father of Jesus Christ, was born.

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin

September 21 - Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. Christmas has 1 day of forefeast and 4 days of afterfeast.
In Orthodoxy, the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos is one of the twelve (the Nativity of the Most Holy Lady of our Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary); in the Catholic Church has the rank of "holiday" (festum).
Jerusalem, Russian, Georgian, Serbian Orthodox churches, as well as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (within Ukraine), Old Believers and some others celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin according to the Julian calendar (old style) - September 8 (21). The Catholic Church, Greece and a number of other local Orthodox churches celebrate it according to the Gregorian calendar (new style) - September 8.

The years passed. Anna has long forgotten about the prophecy of Simeon. Business, household, everyday life - life went on as usual. Joachim and Anna were considered in Nazareth a prosperous married couple of average income. They kept livestock - goats, cows, horses, bulls. And a large flock of sheep. In addition, Joachim owned a small oil mill, which produced sour cream, cottage cheese, butter. Despite his advanced 60 years of age, Joachim still worked hard, trying to keep up with the housework everywhere.
Suddenly the unexpected happened - his wife Anna became pregnant again. At 54! It's just a miracle! And only now did Anna remember about Simeon! She told all her loved ones - her husband, relatives - about the prophecy made to her in childhood: that she would become pregnant at 54 and die in childbirth, and the child that had appeared should be called Mary, and this girl would later become the mother of Jesus - the Messiah, who would suffer a lot and will bring new faith to this world.
Those close to Anna were simply confused. What kind of prophecy, where from, what Messiah, will Anna really die, how can this be, and who will then raise the child?
Joachim was already 60 years old, and he could hardly raise a girl alone.
In those days, having many children was common. And none of the relatives could take little Maria to him. And then Anna remembered about her distant relative Elizabeth. Elizabeth's mother was the second cousin of Anna's mother. Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah did not have children of their own, so they agreed to take Mary with them.

The Nativity of Our Lady
In the Byzantine monuments of the 11th century, the plot is represented by the figure of Anna reclining on a throne. She was served by three girls; here the maids bathed baby Mary.
In the XIV century, the image of Joachim was introduced into the iconography of the Nativity. But he does not play a noticeable role in the disclosure of the plot, the main figure of Anna, which is much larger than him.
In the free iconographic original of the 18th century, the iconography of the Nativity of the Mother of God was described as follows: “Anna lies on a bed, the maidens stand in front of her, holding gifts, and the sunflower and candles, the maiden Anna holds under her shoulders, Joachim is watching from the upper chamber, the woman is washing the Holy Mother of God in the font up to the waist, the girl pours water into the font from a vessel. Leave the chamber ... and at the bottom of that chamber sits Joachim and Anna on the throne and hold the Most Holy Theotokos. " The concise iconographic version of the 14th century turned into a detailed narrative.

Caressing the Most Holy Theotokos.
In the monuments of the 15th-16th centuries and later, they liked to add a scene of "caressing" (Joachim and Anna caressed their little daughter).

In 20 BC. On the morning of July 21, at 6 o'clock, MARIA, the mother of Jesus, was born. Anna did not endure a difficult birth, she died, as predicted by Simeon. The baby was very sickly, and there was no certainty that the girl would survive without her mother's milk. Therefore, Joachim wrote down his daughter in the family genealogy only when the danger of early death had passed, i.e. exactly two months later - September 21st. This date began to be considered the birthday of Mary.

According to the generally accepted tradition, which the Orthodox and Catholics alike adhere to, the Virgin Mary was born in the house of Joachim and Anna, which was located in the northeastern part of Jerusalem. Now it is the territory of the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, near the Lion Gate. However, Orthodox and Catholics point out the exact place in different ways, and these places are about 70 m apart from each other. An Orthodox monastery was built on the Orthodox site, on the ground floor there is a church in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin, and a cave has been preserved under the monastery building. which, according to legend, was part of the house of Joachim and Anna. Catholics indicate the place of the house in the immediate vicinity of Bethesda and built there the Basilica of St. Anne, in the crypt of which there are also ancient underground chambers.
Many babies born three days before July 21 and September 21 are often gifted children, and all of them are under the patronage of the Virgin Mary.
On July 21, nature itself rejoices and celebrates the birth of the Virgin Mary - the air is filled with the heady smells of summer and the sun, an extraordinary lightness settles in all people in the soul, in the morning everyone wakes up with a good mood, anticipating that something extraordinary is about to happen today
.

The Nativity of the Virgin is a holiday of universal joy, as it is sung in the festive troparion (voice 4):
“Thy birth, Virgin Mary,
joy announced to the entire universe:
for out of You shone the Sun of righteousness - Christ our God.
He removed the curse and gave a blessing;
He destroyed death and gave us eternal life. "

In the eastern iconography of the Nativity of the Mother of God, the moment of bringing the newborn Mary to the chest of mother Anna, lying on the bed surrounded by midwives and household members, is most often depicted. The frescoes by Giotto di Bondone (Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, 1304-1306) illustrate in detail the story of the Nativity of Mary.

Elizabeth and Zachariah took Mary into their home. They lived in the city of Tarichea on the shores of Lake Galilee, not far from the place where the Jordan River flows out of the lake. From Tarichea to Nazareth it was about 20 kilometers. Maria with age became more and more like her mother, but with some differences. Maria had wavy hair and blue eyes with an oriental cut ...

in Suzdal
The inhabitants of ancient Suzdal celebrated this day as their "patronal" holiday (September 21, new style). The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin was built in Suzdal in the 13th century. A long solemn service was going on in the cathedral, and the inhabitants of the city renewed the fire in their houses, extinguished the old one and kindled a new one.
Especially many churches in honor of the holiday associated with the birth of Mary appeared after 1380: it was on this day that the victory over the Tatars was won in the massacre on the Kulikovo field.

Like other feasts of the Mother of God, the establishment refers to a relatively late time. The official introduction of this holiday in the Byzantine Empire is supposedly attributed to the emperor of Mauritius at the end. VI or at the beginning of the VII century.

The first mention of the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary occurs in the 5th century. in the East, in the words of St. Proclus, Archbishop of Constantinople (439-446), and in the West, in the sacramentary (missile) of Pope Gelasius (492-496). But all these references are unreliable. The words are only attributed to Proclus, and the sacramentaries were written only in the 8th century. and naturally do not belong to Gelasius. In the months of the beginning of the 5th century. there is not a single Feast of the Theotokos. According to the author of the article in the English-language Catholic Encyclopedia (1913), the first mention of the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin is the hymns of Roman the Sweet Songwriter, written in the period from 536 to 556. The emergence of the holiday is probably associated with the strengthening of the veneration of the Virgin after the Ephesian Council under the influence of the later apocrypha. The festival appeared, apparently, at the beginning of the sixth century, initially in the Greek church and very soon after that it appeared in Rome and extended to their daughter churches.

Despite the mention of the Nativity of the Virgin in the Latin sources of the 7th century, the holiday was not widespread in the West and did not have a solemn service until the 12th-13th centuries. Only at the Council of Lyons (1245) Pope Innocent IV made the octave of the feast obligatory for the entire Western Church, and Pope Gregory XI (1370-1378) established a vigil (vigilia) with fasting and a special liturgy service for the feast.

Folk traditions

For the Eastern Slavs, the day is dedicated to the harvested harvest, fertility and family well-being. By this time, field work is completed: harvesting, exporting grain to the barn, harvesting flax. The foundation has been laid for the welfare of the family for the coming year. On this day, they honored and thanked the Mother of God (Mother - Cheese-Earth) for the harvest. It is believed that she gives prosperity, patronizes agriculture, family and especially mothers. In some places, commemorations for the dead are held, like on Dmitrievskaya Saturday.

Holy of Holies, in the holy of the sanctuary, the Infant is entrusted to be brought up by the hand of the angels: we will all faithfully celebrate Her in the Nativity.
Non-fertile Anna is not fertile, but she is not childless to God: behold, the Pure Virgin Mati was born from childbirth. In the same way of nature, grow the Creator in the image of a slave.

Blessed is Thy chaste womb, Anno, Thou didst grow the Fruit of virginity, Yuzhe without seeds, the Feeder of the creature, Who gave birth and the Deliverer of Jesus.
Thee blesses, ever-dear, all creation, born from Anna today, from the root of Jesse's Rod the Most Pure Color, which grew out of Christ.

Sedalen, voice 4
The Virgin Mary and the Mother of God are true, as a cloud of light is hoisting to us today, and from the righteous will come to our glory. It is not to whom Adam is condemned, and Eve is freed from the bonds, and for this reason we call cryingly with the boldness of the One Pure: joy announces Thy Christmas to the whole universe.

Song 4

Irmos: Prophet Habakkuk, the Lord is wise to the providence, Your Coming, by that cry: from the south God will come. Glory to Thy strength, glory to Thy descent.
Patriarch Jacob, having foreseen, Savior, the greatness of Thy structure is clear, crying out in the Spirit, to Judas, saying secretly: from the summer, thou art ascended to my Son, proclaiming Thee from the Virgin of God.
Now the Rod of Aaron, vegetated from the root of David, now the Pure Virgin occurs: and heaven and earth, and all the fatherland of languages, and Anna and Joachim are mysterious.
Now let the heavens rejoice, let the earth rejoice, and let Joachim and David rejoice. Ov for, like Thy parent, truly the Birth of God: Om, like Thy forefather, preaching Thy majesty, Pure.

Song 5

Irmos: O Lord our God, give us peace, O Lord our God, acquire us, O Lord, don't we know another thing for you, we call your name.
Thy Most Pure Christmas, Virgin Immaculate, unspeakable, and unspeakable conception and Thy birth, Unbride Bride: God is all wrapped up in me.
Today, let the angels rejoice, let those beings from Adam rejoice in songs: the Rod, the increased color of Christ the One, our Redeemer, is born.
Today Eve is allowed condemnation, but infertility is also allowed, and Adam of the ancient oath, about Thy Nativity: Thou will get rid of the aphids.
Glory to Thee who glorified the barren day: be born a Rod that blooms with flowers from the promise, from the Worthless Christ, the Color of our life.
Trinitarian: Glory to Thee, Holy Father, God of the Unborn: glory to Thee, Son of Lifeless, Only Begotten: glory to Thee, Divine and Holy Throne Soul, come from the Father, and dwell in the Son.
Theotokos: Thy womb bore the Sun: Thy purity remained as unharmed before, Virgin: Christ is the Sun, like from the palace Bridegroom, appear from Thee.

Song 6

Irmos: Like the waters of the sea, Human-loving, I am overwhelmed by the waves of life, the same like Jonah, so I cry to Ty: lift my belly from aphids, God is more grave.
Holy of Holies, Thy chaste parents, Pure One, have placed Thee in the temple of the Lord to be educated honestly, and be prepared to be His Mother.
Rejoice mothers and mothers, dare and play childless: motherless because mothers are not fruitful The Mother of God vegetates, she will also relieve Eve of diseases, and the oath of Adam.
I hear David singing to You: the Virgins will be led in the footsteps of You, they will be led to the temple of Tsars. And with him Ty and I, Daughter of Tsarev, I sing.
We sing Thy holy Christmas, we honor Thy immaculate conception, the God-called Bride and the Virgin: they glorify with us the Angels, and the holy souls.
Trinity: In Thee the Trinity Sacrament is sung, and the Pure One is glorified: the Father is well pleased, and the Word has dwelt in Thee, and the Divine Spirit of Autumn for Thee.
Theotokos: Thou art the Golden Censer, the Fire has dwelt in Thy womb, the Word from the Holy Spirit, and the human sight in Thee is seen, Pure Mother of God.

Prayer is bought and sighing, barrenness and iniquity, but Joachim and Anna are favorable, and into the ears of the Lord into the interior, and vegetation The fruit is life-bearing to the world. Ova for a prayer on the mountain I do: ova in the garden the reproach of the burden: but with the joy of unfruitfulness gives birth to the Mother of God, and the Nourishing of our life.

Canto 7

Irmos: The Chaldean cave inflamed by fire, sprinkled with the Spirit, God's coming, the children will go: blessed are you, God our father.
We celebrate, Pure One, and faithfully worship Thy Holy Christmas, singing Thy Son, and we shall get rid of the old Adam's condemnation now.
Now Anna is rejoicing, and cries out, boasting: the failure of the Mother of God is not fruitful, for the sake of condemnation of Evino be resolved, and even sickness in sorrow.
Adam freed, and Eve rejoiced, and cried out in spirit to Theotokos: Through thee, the original oaths are delivered, I am revealed to Christ.
O womb that contains God's Settlement! About the womb, which bore the Shirshay heaven, the Holy Throne, the mental ark of Sacred.
Trinity: let us glorify the Father, the Son, and the Spirit, in the Unity of the Godhead, the Most Holy Trinity, Inseparable, Uncreated, and Consubstantial, and Consubstantial.
Theotokos: You gave birth to the One God, the Virgin gloriously, You renewed your nature by Your Christmas to Mary, You granted Eve the original oath, the Pure Mother of God.

Canto 8

Irmos: Cover your overwhelming waters with waters, set the sea as sand, and contain everything, Thee sings the sun, Thee the moon praises, Thee all creation brings a song to Thee, as if he were the Coordinator of all forever.
Having created a glorious barren womb, opened to Anna, a non-fervent falsehood, and giving Fruit to her, You are the Holy God, You are the Son of the Virgin, You have received the flesh from this, the blessing of the Virgin and the Mother of God.
Close the abyss, and open it, lift the water into the clouds and give rain, You are the Lord, from the barren root of Anna's vegetation, the holy most pure Fruit, and give birth to the Mother of God.
To the maker of our thoughts and the planter of our souls, Thou art a barren land fertile, Thou art a dry old, giving birth, good-natured, reins of fruitfulness hast made the holy Anna, the Most Pure Fruit to sprout the Mother of God.
Come all we will see, as if from the palace is small, the City of God is now reborn, like from the door of the uterine exodus, but I do not enter into communication: One God, the Creator, This is a strange path.
Trinity: About the Inherent Trinity, the Unity of the Primordial One! Thee sings and trembles a multitude of Angel, Heaven and earth, and the abysses are terrified, people bless, fire works, everyone will listen to You, Holy Trinity, with fear, even in creation.
Theotokos: About the latest hearing: God, the Son of the Wife! About seedless Christmas! Worshipless Mother and Born God! O dreadful vision! About the conception of a strange Virgin! Oh unspeakable Christmas! Truly more than the mind, everything, and visions.

Canto 9

Irmos: Virginity is alien to mothers, and childbirth is strange for virgins: on You, the Mother of God, the wallpaper is settled. By this we constantly magnify all the tribes of the earth.
Worthy, Bogomati, Thy purity, you inherited Christmas, through a promise: sometimes more barren, God-drenched.
Fulfill the blatant prophecy, he says: I will raise up the fallen tabernacle of the sacred David, in You, the Pure transformed, Even for the sake of all people, God's dust will be created in the body.
We bow to Thy Mother of God, we glorify this Fruit before it is barren, and the opened bed is gloriously non-fervent. He does everything, the tree is hochet, God is Autocratic.
As a gift to You, the Mother of God, a chant from Anna who was born truly monstrous: to the Mother Mother, the virgin Virgin One, we worship You, sing and glorify.
Trinity: Alien is the lawless to glorify the beginningless Trinity, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the uncreated Omnipotence, the whole world is contained by the mania of Her Power.
Theotokos: Thou didst contain in Thy womb, Virgin Mother of One from the Trinity of Christ the Tsar, All creation sings to Him, and tremble from above: pray to Him, All-Pure One, save our souls.

Svetilen

From the barren day of Anna, the Flower of the Mother of God, all the aromas of the Divine fulfill the ends of the world, and joy fill all the creatures: We singing worthily praise, as if the existence of the earth-born has Exceeded.

The Archangel Gabriel was sent quickly to righteous Anna, when she, in the grief of her barrenness, cry to the Lord from the depths of my heart, seeing in her garden a bird nest, little possessing chicks, and to bring her great joy to her, saying: Your prayer has been heard, but your tears come before God. , and behold, give birth to the Blessed Daughter, the whole tribe of the earth will be blessed about Neyzha, and Her name will be called Mary. Seems to this joyous promise, a cry of the Most Blessed:

Rejoice, great consolation for those who have given birth to Thee; Rejoice, pleasure for the whole world.
Rejoice, proclamation of the fallen Adam; Rejoice, deliverance of Eve's tears.
Rejoice, Most Pure One, who have rejoiced the whole world with Her birth.

Kontakion 2
Seeing the righteous Anna of the great archangel, the appearance and hearing his verbs, worship God and the speech: As the Lord God lives, as if I give birth to a Child, I will give E to serve Him, may He serve and praise His Holy name during the whole summer of His life. Fill with inexpressible joy, flow to Jerusalem with diligence, so that the tamo in the church will sing to God with gratitude: Alleluia.

Ikos 2
Have a clean mind before God, the righteous Joachim, both of which he was rejected from people in the temple for childlessness, and in grief this idea into the wilderness, and there praying with tears, speech: I will not put food in my mouth, I will not return to my house, but my tears Let the wilderness be food for me as a home, until the Lord God of Israel will visit me. And behold, the Angel of the Lord will appear to him and the good news, as if a Daughter will be born to him, about Her Christmas there will be joy to the whole world. Filled with this joy, go to Jerusalem, and there together with Anna glorify God, saying the Promised:
Rejoice, longed for by all from ancient years; Rejoice, foretold from all prophet.
Rejoice, pre-chosen by God from the creation of the world; Rejoice, promised from the fall of the forefathers to sinners.
Rejoice, Council of ineffable Eternal care; Rejoice, well-written Image of Divine Foreknowledge.
Rejoice, animated Switch, the Word has been written in it by the finger of God; Rejoice, O source of life, from the Worthless the gospel of Christ flows abundantly.

Rejoice, more than all gold shining, the Chamber of the Wisdom of God not made by hands; Rejoice, the most radiant morning of every sun, the Home of Christ.

The power of the Vyshnyago autumn then to conception matured in her days the righteous Anna, and the barren one is false, as if the cornfield is fertile, let it vegetate from her for the joy of the whole world, perishing in sorrow, Sweet Village, Blessed Virgin Mary, salvation to all who want to reap, and praise from the depths of the soul: Alleluia.

Ikos 3
Possessive, Most Pure, your parents are your immaculate life, conceive Thee in a good old age, not diligently with fleshly sweetness, but in chastity and self-control, may it appear in Thy birth, not the will of nature, but the power of God, the power of God, conquering the nature of the order, and may they know everything, as a prayer, together with the sighing of barrenness to the vegetation, Thee, the fruit of the Life-giving world. For this sake, honoring Thy immaculate conception, we sing to Thy sitsa:
Rejoice, joy to the barren mother; Rejoice, consolation of hopeless parents.
Rejoice, for you have vegetated from the dry root of Jesse; Rejoice, and you have grown the Color of Christ from him.
Rejoice, for you have begun to conquer in your conception even in your conception; Rejoice, by this you foreshadowed the preservation of Your virginity in Christmas.

Kontakion 4
The storm of sorrows and sorrows of many were possessed by Your righteous parents, Most Pure One, as if you were fruitless until old age, as if you were unworthy to have an inheritance in the Kingdom of God. Compassionate with them from the ages about the sterility of our nature, all creation, obeying vanity: groans for Adam, as if the earth was cursed for his sake; Eve also weeps, as if her sorrow and illness multiplied; the whole human race, having joined corruption, co-breathes with them. When, O Bogomati, by Thy birth, the ancient sterility and corruption are consumed, all creation cry out to God with thanksgiving for Thee: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

Rejoice, Chamber of the Holy Spirit; Rejoice, Tabernacle of God with men.
Rejoice, Most Pure One, who have rejoiced the whole world with Her birth.

Kontakion 5
The God-given star, which shone from Nazareth and enlightened the whole world, we see Thee, the Most Holy Virgin: little is God, he also sanctified by Thy Christmas, and we despise people, for the sake of all the words: from Nazareth, can anything be good? God, who is weak and humiliated, is chosen by God, but they will shame the strong one, and reveal from Nazareth Thee to the whole world the Unfading Color, with virginity blooming all over the world, the Holy Virgin of all the saints, who has not known a single sin in all of His life, but let us all gratefully sing about You to God: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

Ponezhe, when you see Thee, coming to her house, come out to Your meeting and cry out with a great voice: Blessed are You in women and blessed is the Fruit of Your womb. Thy new terrible and wonderful sacraments, the Mother of God, and a new one is the source of life instead of sensual Eve: that, having obeyed the serpent, began to lay God's aversion to man and give birth to sorrow to wives. Thy Son, O Virgin, Like Eve's womb, condemn to give birth to fruits in diseases, in Thy womb have settled, painlessly, the keys of virginity intact in Thy birth. For this, for the sake of You, the fallen female nature rejoices, instead of the ancient oath of the freedom of Christ, you have received: Following You, the wives, who are enemies, begin to conquer, holding on to virginity and crying to You like this:
Rejoice, adorned with divine glory; Rejoice, exalted by the purity of virginity.

For this, for Thy mother's sake, carefully observe Thee in immaculate purity, but the hand of the wicked will never touch the Inspired Kivot of God: that will sanctify Your bed, and alienate yourself from all impurity, and the call of a pure virgin to keep Your peace. And when the nipples feed Ty, the prayer is cheap, but with the mother's milk you feed yourself the Word of God. Such is Thy blameless purity that appears, crying to Ty sice:

Most of all, grant us, O Most Holy Theotokos, Virgin, on the bright day of Thy Nativity, with a pure heart, understand and remember, with great joy and thanksgiving, the barren womb of the Holy Righteous Anna wears You, and we will not exactly words, but we will glorify with our heart most of all with our heart. The Blessed Virgin Mary was born at a time when people reached such limits of moral decline, at which their rebellion seemed already impossible. The best minds of that era recognized and often openly said that God must descend into the world in order to correct faith and prevent the destruction of the human race. The Son of God wanted to accept human nature for the salvation of people, and the Most Pure Virgin Mary, the only one worthy to contain in Himself and embody the Source of purity and holiness, He chooses as His Mother.

A very long time ago, more than two thousand years ago, in Palestine, in Galilee, in the small town of Nazareth, there lived a husband and wife - Joachim and Anna. They came from ancient and noble families and deeply believed in God. The family was quite prosperous (Joachim owned large flocks of sheep), but they lived very modestly - most of the income was donated to the Jerusalem temple and distributed to the poor.

And yet the Lord sent Joachim and Anna a difficult test - they had no children. Good spouses were very worried and did not stop praying to the Lord that He would give them a child: after all, a family without children is not a family. And, besides, like all Jews, they knew from the predictions that the Savior of the world would soon be born from the lineage of King David (from the lineage of Joachim!).

And at that time it was believed that if people do not have children, then they are sinners and so the Lord punishes them for their sins. That is why the neighbors of Joachim and Anna often laughed and condemned them. But the couple tried not to be offended by the evil and unjust words and still lived righteously and fervently prayed to the Lord. And so, when even hope had almost left Joachim and Anna, the Lord rewarded them for their patience and faith.

One of the big holidays has come. Like all men, Elder Joachim went to Jerusalem to offer a sacrifice to the Lord in the temple. He brought rich gifts, but the priest Issachar this time did not accept his sacrifice. He told Joachim that yes, a childless, which means that a sinful person is unpleasant to God. Loudly spoken cruel and unjust words aroused the ridicule of the people in the temple. The heart of the unfortunate Joachim pierced with such pain that it seemed that it would break now. Without looking at anyone, in deep sadness, he hastily left the temple ...

Joachim did not notice how he ended up in a deserted place. "I will not taste any food, I will not return to my house until the Lord God hears me," decided poor Joachim. shepherds, for forty days and nights he mourned his grief and prayed to the Lord.

The news that the priest did not accept the sacrifice of Joachim, and that he himself had disappeared somewhere, reached Anna. She felt her husband's pain with all her heart and could not hold back her tears. "Now," Anna sobbed, "I am the most unhappy of all: I was abandoned by God and forgotten by my husband!" She cried for a long time ... But then a bird song came to her ears. Turning around, Anna saw a nest with fledglings among the branches of a laurel tree. They were fed by a small bird.

The poor woman's tears flowed even more heavily. "I am the most sinful of all! Others carry their children in their arms, only I am deprived of this consolation! From others they accept gifts into the temple of God, and show them respect for the fact that they have children. I alone am rejected from the temple of my God!" Woe, woe to me! Behold, O Lord, at me, and finally hear my cry and my prayers! "

And ... lo and behold! Weeping Anna saw an Angel who said: "Anna! The Lord has heard your prayers. You will give birth to a Daughter and you will call Her Mary, which means" lady, hope ". She is granted salvation to the whole world." The angel told Anna to go to Jerusalem, where she would meet her husband at the Golden Gate of the temple. The astonished Anna could barely utter in reply: "As the Lord my God lives!"

It took her a little time to get ready - and now she is already in Jerusalem. In the indicated place, an agitated Joachim was waiting for his wife. It turns out that a miracle happened to him: an angel also appeared to him and said: "The Lord accepted your prayers, Joachim: you will have a daughter for the joy of the whole world. Go to Jerusalem - there you will meet your wife at the Golden Gate." Shocked Joachim and Anna did not believe their happiness! Having come to their senses a little with joy, they made a promise to dedicate the unborn child to God.

And when the leaves were golden on the trees and autumn came, the long-awaited daughter was born to the righteous couple. And it was a miracle - after all, Joachim and Anna were already very old people. But God is subject to everything, it is not for nothing that He is called the Almighty. The girl, as the Angel said, was named Mary.

Joachim and Anna dearly loved their Daughter, they could not get enough of Her. Remembering the words of the Angel that their little Daughter has a great future ahead, the happy parents simply were in awe of Her.

Now the neighbors were happy for Joachim and Anna. They realized how wrong they were to hurt such good people. But none of them could imagine that this glorious Girl in a few years would become the Mother of the very Savior of the human race.
