Ninth Friday after Easter Ninth Friday after Easter is the main locally revered holiday of Solikamsk, "roaming" like Easter itself. Whenever there is the Bright Resurrection of Christ - Easter, in March, in April or in May, Friday in the ninth week after it in Solikamsk never did not miss. This has been the custom for a long time. Located on the outskirts of the Russian lands, in the initial period of its history, Solikamsk, having neither fortifications nor military strength, repeatedly suffered from the raids of hostile neighbors - the Voguls, Nogai and Siberian Tatars. There were several such raids. The most significant and bloody raid was in May 1547. On May 25, the Nogais attacked Usolye Kamskoye, as Solikamsk was then called. They burned the city and surrounding villages, beat many residents ... Victory took place on May 30, which that year fell on the Ninth Friday of Easter. In memory of this event, from the end of the 16th century, residents of the city began to hold a religious procession every year. Since the end of the 18th century, a three-day fair was timed to coincide with the Ninth Friday holiday, since with a huge crowd of people, demand on these days exceeded supply. In the evenings these days, mass festivities were organized in the city, round dances were held, visiting circus performers and theater artists performed on the square and in the garden across the river. So the ancient religious holiday gradually turned into a historical and cultural tradition.

Easter (Bright Resurrection of Christ) - the greatest holiday of Orthodoxy .
A holiday of all holidays. A celebration of all celebrations.
The longed-for and saving holiday of Easter is a day of great joy.

On this Sunday, Orthodox Christians celebrate the deliverance through Christ the Savior of all mankind from slavery to the devil and the gift of life and eternal bliss.

How to calculate the date of Easter

The date of Orthodox Easter is determined according to the Church Julian calendar, taking into account the estimated lunar calendar and the seven-day week.
The time of Easter is regulated by church canonical rules: Easter is celebrated on the Sunday following the first spring Full Moon, while it is forbidden to celebrate Easter with the Jews.
In accordance with these rules and assuming the accuracy of the nineteen-year "Metonian" cycle of recurrence of the lunar phases in the Julian calendar, the Easter tables (Easter) were compiled, according to which the time of the celebration of Easter is determined. The dates for Easter are cyclically repeated every 532 years (Great Indication).
In accordance with the canonical rules, Orthodox Easter will always be on a Sunday from April 4 to May 8 (March 22 to April 25, old style).

Unless otherwise noted, dates are in new style

Easter of Christ in 2018 falls on April 8. The Holy Trinity in 2018 will be May 27. From Easter to Trinity there are seven weeks, which are also called Holy Pentecost. On seven Sundays, various events are recalled, especially the prayer rule and bows at Holy Pentecost.

The seven weeks after are highlighted in the church calendar, and are considered "Easter" Weeks. "Christ is Risen!" Orthodox greet each other all seven weeks after Easter and answer "Truly He is Risen!"... In addition, before each meal, the Passover troparion is sung, and not the usual prayers.

It stands out especially, in 2018 it runs from 9 to 14 April. This is a continuous week, that is, it does not have fast days. All this week everyone can ring the bells. There are peculiarities in the prayer rule - instead of morning and evening prayers and the rules for preparing for the sacrament, the Easter Hours are sung or read. The canons necessary before the sacrament are replaced by the canon of Easter.

The second week is called Fomin, Antipaskha or Krasnaya Gorka. It begins in 2018 on April 15 with the remembrance of the assurance of the Apostle Thomas in the risen Savior and continues until April 21. An important event falls on this week - Radonitsa, a day of special commemoration of the dead. Meals this week are on a regular annual basis - Wednesday and Friday fast days.

The third week is called Myrrhbearers, begins in 2018 on April 22 with the Day of the Holy Wives of the Myrrhbearers and ends on April 28.

The miracle of the blind was performed on Saturday and became a challenge to the Pharisees, who forbade them to work on Saturday. On Thursday of this week, there is always a rolling feast of the Ascension of the Lord, which in 2018 falls on May 17.

After all seven weeks of Easter are over, the feast of the Holy Trinity begins, which in 2018 falls on May 27.

From Easter to Trinity, calendar of seven weeks after Easter 2018 - holidays and parental Saturdays

From the very day of Holy Easter to the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, all deeds, meals and prayers are preceded by three readings of the troparion of Easter: "Christ is Risen from the dead by death, trampling death and those who are in the grave of gifts!" Then the Trisagion reads: "Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal have mercy on me!"

From the Ascension to the Trinity, all prayers begin with the Trisagion.

From Easter to Trinity, the prayer "Heavenly King ..." is not read.

From Easter to Ascension, the prayer “It is worthy to eat” is replaced by the Backer of Easter.

From the Ascension to the Trinity, both of these prayers are not read. We must not forget that from Easter to Trinity, prostrations are not performed in the temple.

With the advent of Christianity, the long-standing veneration of the goddess Makosha turned into the veneration of Paraskeva Friday. At least, this is what the famous scientist Rybakov and other researchers assert. Departing from the church canon, the people created their own versions of stories about her life and interaction with the world of people.

Most of all, her image and deeds were correlated with the help of women in all matters, the patronage of women in labor and children. Crossroads and wells were its sacred places. She also patronized trade. Therefore, fairs were usually held on Fridays, and until the 17th century, a wooden image of it was put on the marketplace.

The women especially honored her day Friday and did not do hard work that day. Sewing, spinning and washing were forbidden. It was believed that whoever neglects this prohibition pricks the Saint with needles and a spindle, and falls asleep in her eyes.

Anyone who violated her veneration for rest, Friday could punish very severely. For example, according to some stories, for violating the prohibition, a saint could prick with a needle and a spindle to blood and even gouge out her eyes. According to one of the popular horror stories, a saint once removed her skin alive from such a violator for violating the ban.

A special ban on sewing on Friday was for pregnant women. An angry Friday could sew a child's mouth or eyes and a blind or dumb child would be born. And the spouses should not have made love, because the child could be born a cripple. This is the shadow side of the image.

But to those who worshiped her, she was an assistant and protector. She brought an enviable groom, facilitated childbirth and gave children good health. Until the beginning of the 20th century, women worshiped Paraskeva and cooked for her on Friday sweet milk porridge from various cereals with the addition of fruits and berries, put a spoon next to it and left the gift on the table overnight.

And in order to successfully get married and so that the husband was not a drunkard, the girls of marriageable age fasted on Friday, lit candles on Friday in the church, saying “P'yatinka, my mother, help me if I want to marry me” and added that the husband was a nondrinker and the kids are healthy. Then they brought a piece of flax into the church to decorate the icon.

By the way, the men here did not lag behind the women and asked for a hard-working and not grumpy wife. And among the Belarusians, this conspiracy sounded like this: "Pyatyonka, Maya matsenka, you want pamazhi, if I want to marry payty"

To receive the gifts of Friday, the most common was the vow and the fulfillment of "twelve" - fasting for 12 Fridays of the year. Professor Rybakov sees in this the remnants of the cult of Fridays of the pagan goddess Makosha and her veneration during the lunar holidays of the pagan year.

I am not sure if this is absolutely true, because the first texts of the "Instruction" known now were in English, French and Italian. The French and Serbian collections date from the 14th century, and the very first Russian list dates from the 15th century. The original versions, according to some scholars (A. Angushev-Tikhonov), were in Greek and Latin.

And the very title "The Teaching of the Saints of Our Father Clement of the Pope about the Twelve" says a lot about the author of the text.

Although, in Germany and Holland, the name “12 Golden Fridays” was common. And the “practice” was widespread in many European countries under this name. Here the description of 12 Fridays is added to the manuscripts along with calendars, medical and astrological texts, decrees, messages, etc.

In the Slavic lands, apparently, this apocryphal was so much on local beliefs that it became an opportunity to unite the old pagan gods with a new religion and continue to worship the Goddess under a new guise.

Although, in Constantinople and its outskirts, the cult of Paraskeva-Friday was almost never met. So if he came to Kievan Rus along with Christianity, it was clearly not from Byzantium. Moreover, in 1589 the Patriarch of Constantinople himself, with a roundabout letter to the Lithuanian-Russian bishops, prohibited the celebration of Friday on a par with Sunday.

The main lists known today were collected and published by researchers and scholars in the 19th and 20th centuries. But among believers there is still a description of the "twelve" in a handwritten version, passed from hand to hand, as a saving thread in difficult life situations.

Although, its attitude to this ritual, the church outlined several centuries ago, adding the "Legend" to the lists of renounced and false books.

Before the revolution, the "Precept" itself existed in two forms: as a handwritten text and as a spiritual verse. The tradition of spiritual verse and oral retelling no longer exists today. But among believers, handwritten notebooks with prayers and the rules for performing 12 fasts are still passed on to get rid of troubles.

But once whole villages could fulfill the vowed Fridays due to epidemics, droughts, falling cattle, the appearance of worms and other misfortunes. For example, in 1590-1598. the peasants in the Tavernskaya volost imposed a commandment for three years, so that "on Friday, neither pound, nor thresh, nor burn a stone." And whoever breaks the commandment, on that add 8 altyn and 2 money.

Very godly conduct was prescribed on such vowed Fridays. It was impossible to slander, swear, as well as make love and conceive children. The formula in one of the versions from the Nizhny Novgorod archive sounds like this: “And whoever in these holy days will commit fornication, a husband with a wife, a fornicator with a harlot, then a child will be born to them and will be deaf or dumb, blind or legless, a thief or a robber, or murderer. Everyone should fast and read these every twelve Fridays. Amen!"

It is interesting that often the "Instruction" goes alongside and is combined with prayers from the apocrypha "The Dream of the Virgin", which are still used by many healers to heal, remove damage, curses and other magical negativity. Coincidence or another swallow from the kingdom of dreams of Makoshi?

When does the countdown of these reserved Fridays begin? In some versions of the recorded texts, the first Friday begins in March. In others, it begins with Ascension. I have seen the modern version circulating among believers, where the beginning of the vow falls on the week of Great Lent.

According to the list, fasting and performing rituals and prayers on each of these Fridays brought very specific gifts, and if this ritual still exists, then perhaps it makes sense?

Well, now a description of each of the Fridays dedicated to Paraskeva and marked by fasting with prayers and especially decency behavior.

First Friday in the first week of Great Lent.

On this day, the fulfillment of the commandment protected family members from serious illnesses, including those transmitted by family, from unexpected tragic death, women of the family from stillborn children. In order for the family to have wealth on this day, it is imperative to give alms to the poor. It is also necessary to remember the ancestors so that they help their descendants.

Second Friday before the Annunciation.

Fasting and prayer this Friday cleanses the family of drunkards, fornication and drug addicts. Protects your home from burglars and thieves. From suicide and the sin of despondency. Eliminates poverty and prison members of the clan. Strengthens marriage. The name of the one who is fasting will be recorded with God.

On this day, birds and homeless street animals are fed. Candles are lit in the church and a prayer service for water is ordered to the Archangel Michael, the Archangel Gabriel, the Guardian Angel of each family member.

Third Friday falls on Holy Week of Great Lent.

Delivers from temptations and grave sins, from deception in commercial affairs, from robbery. Fasting on this day relieves from very serious and fatal diseases.

Fourth Friday before the Ascension of the Lord.

Those who venerate the Holy One on this day, Friday will endow with diligence. Women will be excellent needlewomen, and men will be skillful earners for the family. Since this Friday was close to mermaid week, fasting on it protected from accidents on the water, drowning.

Fifth Friday, before Trinity brings to the clan longevity with the preservation of the soundness of mind and strength of the body in the elderly. There will be no infertility in the family. On the spiritual plane, it protects from eternal torment.

Possible image of Mokosh in ancient Russian architecture.

The sixth Friday before the day of the birth of the Forerunner prophet and baptist of the Lord John (July 7).
Fasting and prayer of the Holy One on this day will save both adults and children of the family from illnesses. Keeps you away from great sorrows. Protects against fire. You also need to pray for stillborn and unborn children.

In some lists, the sixth Friday is considered the one before Peter's Lent. And then the order shifts.

It brings fertility to fields and vegetable gardens, prevents theft of crops. Any thieves will bypass your house and fields. The clan will flourish and the house will be full. Protects against thunder and lightning. It is also good to pray to the prophet Elijah.

Fasting on this day gives a worthy husband or wife and the protection of the Mother of God in any business. Brings a strong marriage. Protects against fever.

Brings the right helpers and patrons to life. Gives success, hard work and protection to all heavenly patrons. One who has stood this fast will never die of hunger.

It gives protection from witchcraft and words of envy not only to the one who is fasting, but also to his entire family. Archangel Michael himself comes to his protection.

Eleventh Friday before Christmas.

Anyone who fasts on this Friday will be forgiven of all sins both in life and at the Last Judgment.

Twelfth Friday before Epiphany.

Whoever has kept all the posts will be granted to contemplate the Mother of God before her death. Those who survive this fast will atone for the seven sins and passions of the family.

Whoever decides on 12 Fridays, according to legend, “after the sixth of 12 Fridays, Friday will appear in a dream and reveal to a person half of his future; after the twelfth Friday she will tell him the whole future. "

What else can I say? In Ukraine, many researchers of the 18-20 century noted that people said that they, either one of the neighbors, or at the time of parents and grandparents, saw Friday as a lanky, thin, naked woman with disheveled hair with her breasts thrown over her shoulders, all punctured by a spindle and needles. And there were many stories about these meetings. Who was the spirit of the area or the illusion of the imagination? Who knows. There are so many unknowns in the world. And those who did not see, themselves created her image. As it is mentioned in the regulations of Peter the Great: “It is heard that in Little Russia, in the Starodub regiment, on the pre-ordained festive day, they take a simple-haired woman under the name of Friday, and they lead it during the church, and at the church the people give this honor with gifts and hope of certain benefits ".

Perhaps it really is an echo of the ancient worship of the Great Goddess. After all, Friday in the ancient world was dedicated to both Venus and Freya and in different traditions was associated with the feminine principle and deity. And 12 Fridays are the remnants of the pagan ritual of 12 full moons of the year of the farmers, for whom it was a sacred calendar allowing them to live in rhythm with nature. After all, in Europe there was a legend about 12 Golden Fridays.

Here everyone decides for himself. And this is another, personal story of what to believe ...
