Target shield: what, where, how much? How to choose the right shield for archery? Selecting arrowheads.

For zeroing, as well as for accurate shooting from a bow or crossbow, the shooter needs regular training. And in order to preserve your bow and crossbow arrows, it is better to practice shooting at special shields and targets. Shooting shields or shooting targets can be purchased in our store.

3D targets: Light and compact shields for shooting, made of a special material, when hit by arrows, they remain safe and sound. The shield perfectly withstands hits from powerful bows and crossbows and even arrows with hunting tips. Such equipment is necessary for everyone who is interested in throwing weapons; volumetric

3D targets— The 3D target is designed for shooting from a crossbow or bow and is made of special silicone foam, it does not crumble, the holes are closed after a shot from a crossbow or bow, and as a result 3D targets last for a long time. We present a huge range of 3D targets for every taste and color; you can buy 3D targets from us: wild boar, deer and even 3D bear targets. Regular training in shooting at a 3D target will allow fans of crossbow hunting and bow hunting to achieve an accurate hit in the “kill-zone” of the animal.

But the conversation about targets never came up. However, constant training and improvement of archery and crossbow skills is often a strict necessity. After all, the flight of an arrow is influenced by many factors, the most famous of which is wind. Corrections when shooting are taken even when using conventional firearms, what can we say about such things as arrows?

Anyone can hit a meter by meter target from 10 meters. From 30 meters, no one new to handling a bow or crossbow can hit. It is precisely in order to be able to easily hit a target from 50 meters that you need to train constantly.

For training you need a target. Moreover, the target is reusable so that it does not spoil the arrows. Good arrows are not cheap. So the simple approach of placing boards and shooting at them is not suitable here. You can shoot at boards or bottles from a schnapper - this is a crossbow that shoots balls or stones.
Commercially available targets are mainly made of twisted straw. However, they are not suitable for archery with a draw weight of 20 (or more) kilograms. The arrows simply pass right through such a target and completely destroy the feathers. Crossbow bolts pierce the target through and with less tension, simply because the bolt is shorter.

After spending 10 arrows or bolts, anyone begins to understand that they need a better target and it would be better to make it themselves, since a good target is not cheap, but at the same time it is a consumable item.

So, here are several options for making targets for a bow or crossbow with your own hands.

Option one is a legacy of the Soviet past. Minimum required parts and ease of target restoration.

A target for archery or crossbow shooting can be made from an old bag. Open the bag and cut out two squares from its fabric.

Sew the sides of the blanks together. Fill the resulting bag with wood shavings, bend the corners and sew on them as shown in the picture. Sew all edges with a long stitch, on both sides at the same time and with two threads. After this, the target will look like a square-shaped mattress. On the front side, paint several concentric circles with varnish paints.
The main advantage of such a target is the ease of repair; it is enough to sew a new layer of burlap on the outside and the target is again ready to accept arrows. Arrows and bolts are braked by wood shavings and do not deteriorate at all.

The next version of a homemade target for a bow and crossbow is made from modern insulating materials.

For the target, two isolon blocks were used (these are hot-pressed scraps of polyethylene foam); the blocks are glued together using polyurethane foam (remember to wet the surfaces before applying the foam and compress the blocks until polymerization). The stand is made from slats that were purchased at Ikea, and brackets with wing nuts and screws were also purchased there. The design turned out to be collapsible and easily transportable.

And this is a set of packaging cardboard, shooting at the end of the assembly. Tightened with ropes.

This target is made of carpet and also serves as an ottoman when on vacation? Manufacturing is very simple - the carpet is rolled into a roll and secured on the outside with tape. The ottoman target turned out to be quite light, it can also be taken to regular barbecue trips, the main thing is to choose the size so that it would be comfortable to sit with the target on its end. The arrows enter between the layers of carpet and practically do not destroy the target. From 30 meters from a 270lb bow, the stele enters 70 percent of its length.

Here's another recipe for making a homemade target for a bow or crossbow
1. Size 60x60 (cm)
2. Four layers of foam
3. A sheet of construction cardboard (kraft cardboard) is laid between each layer of foam rubber.
4. In the top sheet (where the target is attached) a round cutout is made with a diameter equal to the diameter of the largest circle of the target or slightly larger.
5. Under the hole in the top sheet, place a sheet of ordinary cardboard on which a paper target is attached.
6. In the lowest and highest sheet, holes with a diameter of 10 mm are drilled along the edge, so that along each edge there are 6 holes at an equal distance from each other.
7. All layers and pads are stacked on top of each other
8. The bottom sheet is laced with a rope through the holes to the top sheet with a round hole for the target.
9. A loop is made from the same rope (tied to the corner holes of the bottom and top sheets) with which the target can be hung on any nail in the wall or branch on a tree. Everything is ready to fire.
The result is a collapsible boom catcher in which it is easy to replace failed layers, there is no need to glue anything, it is quickly assembled and disassembled, and it is easy to transport disassembled in a car.

I hope this article will help you in mastering the art of archery or crossbow!

Vladimir comments:

Good article. But I have a question? These targets are good when you have a car to transport them or your own territory (dacha, private house). I have neither a car nor my own territory, but only a backpack. Is there such a target that could be carried in a backpack?

Alexander comments:

The isolon block is easy to cut and glue into a target of the desired size. It all depends on what size you are comfortable wearing, and whether it is enough to fit

Igor comments:

A thick rubber mat that is placed in front of the door to wipe your feet. You can roll it up into a backpack and stretch it out on ropes in the grove. Crossbow bolts (50lbs) with 7m included at 50%

Roman comments:

Good idea! I'll have to try it on my next trip to nature!

Victor comments:

What thickness should a target made of insulated blocks have? The fact is that insulated blocks 5cm and 10cm thick are available for sale.

Victor comments:

There may be a typo in the text about the carpet target - 270 lb for bow draw weight - a bit steep

Dmitry comments:

Tried a 60lb compound bow. Penoplex - 7 layers of 50mm. The arrow pierces and sticks out 15-20 cm from behind. It is pulled out with 2 hands and only with support from the legs. Not an option. Mineral wool - The arrow goes through 80cm of wool and sticks out halfway at the back. Option, . the plumage also passes through the cotton wool. But the volume is wrong. OSB9mm+chipboard 20mm - the arrow went right through and stuck out 10cm. The tip broke off the glue and flew away, scratching the metal (2mm galvanized, tangentially) behind the target. I was able to reach it only by bracing myself with my feet, and even then not right away. Should I try something with a rug?

Victor comments:

Dmitry, try 2-centimeter polystyrene foam, cut into blocks 20 cm wide, compressed, like packaging cardboard in this article. The arrow extends 5-10 cm from the rear and can be pulled out with one hand when using an arrow puller. Blocks change as they wear out

Mort comments:

And when you pull out the arrows, the arrowheads don't fall off?

Measles comments:

No, they are holding up fine.

Stepan comments:

I'm a beginner and shoot dull arrows. How am I a target suitable for them?

Artem comments:

Yes, in principle, any target, even from hay, even from carpet, even from foam plastic.

Amateur archery and crossbow shooting is a seasonal activity. And it is no coincidence that this season in our country is called the summer season. Let's try to combine business with pleasure by creating a crossbow and archery shooting range on our site. As always, with a minimum of financial costs.

Organizing a personal shooting range

What it looks like in reality.

The end of the 30-meter-long shooting line is tightly closed by the back wall of the neighbor's metal hangar. At the very beginning, I, naive, considered it a fairly reliable obstacle for arrows if they missed. As it soon became clear, even when fired from a standard crossbow, they pierced the metal and, leaving the feathers in the hole, calmed down in the hangar. The neighbor's criticism was taken seriously, and we had to worry about purchasing additional protection.

Budget arrow catcher

A branded arrow-catching net 2.5 meters high now costs three thousand per linear meter (previously it was a little cheaper). That is, for five or six I would give approximately the cost of “Mongoose”. Besides, you can’t buy it in our city, you have to order it.

Geotextiles (the so-called Dornit), used in road construction and hydraulic engineering, seemed to be a panacea. At work I deal with both, but first I decided to look in specialized centers. I found it without any problems, and the price is delicious - 30 rubles per meter of fabric 2.2 m high. But the minimum purchase volume is a 50-meter roll (pictured). In the end, geotextiles were found in the required quantities. The Vidocq, however, is too industrial, the country landscape doesn’t paint at all. Although I saw a snow-white version on the Internet, but, again, “from 50 meters.”

This thing really works. With reservations.

Firstly, the density of Dornit is required to be as low as possible (mine is 200 g/sq.m), and it must hang freely and in folds on a simple structure of poles with guy wires, otherwise it will look like a hangar wall with the same result. In the picture on the left, the screen is overdrawn, which is not great; on the right, it’s a more acceptable option.

Secondly, every now and then the screen is sewn through with arrows. Here it is: a training 30-pound bow and a Scorpion-type recurve crossbow are its pinnacle, though guaranteed. More and more serious models, especially “blockers”, almost always emerge victorious at country distances. Fortunately, the arrows lose their strength, but the plastic feathers sometimes have to be straightened. There is, however, one option related to the characteristics of tips of various types.

Choosing arrowheads

Sports (not hunting) tips are found in two types: for paper targets (with smooth tip lines - in the photo on the left) and for 3D - sub-caliber, with a more predatory profile (on the right). While learning to shoot, use only the first ones. They do not damage the arrow catcher as much, but they quite confidently hit even homemade volumetric targets, which will be discussed in the next article.

Don’t be upset if you get “tridash” ones with arrows. Firstly, they will come in handy in the very near future, and secondly, sporting tips can be bought at any specialized store, and are an order of magnitude cheaper than blade hunting ones. In addition, do not forget that the latter turn a harmless sports projectile into a weapon, as soon as you screw them to an arrow, and target shields with them “die” very quickly. And they cost quite a lot.

Target shield: what, where, how much?

In recent years, a target shield made from a set of isolon blocks (pictured on the right) has become considered classic. This is a fairly common noise and heat insulating material. The thing is not bad, but the disadvantages include a considerable price, considering that you will have to use several layers of it for the shield, difficulties in removing a stuck arrow, and, well, it is heavy. By the way, branded arrow catchers are most often also made from something similar.

Wonderful mobile shields can be made from half-forgotten striped bags filled with rags “an occupier’s dream” from the time of the formation of “shuttle capitalism”. They even have very durable carrying handles - as the manufacturers knew about the needs of crossbow archers :).

I mentioned very budget target shields in previous articles. In short, these are also cardboard boxes tightly stuffed with rags and reinforced along the edges with tape with a handle or side cutouts for carrying, approximately the following dimensions - 60x60x40 cm (pictured on the left). More is possible, but the thickness, even for Scorpio, should not be less than 30 centimeters. Old items, before they become stuffing, should be rid of buttons, zippers and other hardware.

To prevent even dense padding from compacting at the bottom, leaving the top half-empty, periodically turn the shield over to the other side, the side that has accumulated too many holes should be changed to the opposite one, and the location of the paper target should also change. If the surfaces are very worn, simply replace the box - this goodness is not in short supply. But the rags last quite a long time.

Although the target shields look rather potbellied, they are by no means 3D targets, but rather arrow catchers. About targets for archery and crossbow shooting, as well as how to make them yourself - in.

Shields for bows and crossbows

Choosing a shield for a crossbow and bow: instructions for beginners

If you decide to learn how to shoot a bow or crossbow, you cannot do without constant practice. It would seem that all you need is to purchase a weapon. You can choose, for example, banks or trees in the forest as a target. However, in this case, it won’t be long before you splurge on buying arrows, since after a couple of trainings they will become unusable. That is why special shields are used for practice. A beginner is faced with a difficult question: which block to choose for a crossbow and which for a bow? A review of products will help you understand the intricacies and choose convenient ones. crossbow targets and onions, which you can order in our store. Delivery of purchases is carried out to any region of the country. Regular promotions and discounts will make your purchase even more profitable.

Durable blocks for powerful shots

Inexpensive crossbow shields are made from isolon. The material is very resilient and elastic, so the arrow holes will quickly tighten. In addition, such shields do not rot, are not afraid of water, and do not deteriorate from cold and heat. More reliable shields are made by combining isolon and aramid fabric.

The thickness of the average target is 20-50 centimeters. Thinner models can withstand a series of shots from afar; products with a thickness of more than half a meter do not deteriorate from a point-blank crossbow attack. The shields are easy to transport, as they weigh no more than 3 kilograms. Pins are provided for attaching paper targets to the product.

Another important aspect is the price. On our website you can purchase a crossbow shield with a thickness of 20 centimeters for 1,750 rubles. Hunting fans will appreciate other targets - 3D targets. We offer three-dimensional figurines in the form of birds, hedgehogs, squirrels and wild boars, which from a distance are practically indistinguishable from real animals.

Arrow catching blocks

Bow targets are also made from isolon, because its dense structure does not allow arrows to pass through, but does not damage them either. When using a quality block, the material does not stick to the boom shaft.

Typically amateur bow shield reaches a meter in height and width. Its minimum thickness can be only 10 centimeters; usually for archery a shield with a thickness of 20 cm (or 10+10 cm) is used. For additional protection, it is recommended to use arrow-catcher nets: we offer a wide range of sizes - from 3 to 50 meters.

Paper targets, just like in crossbow blocks, are attached with fasteners and pins. Shields for bows are installed on special tripods that securely hold isolon blocks and do not fall from shots.

A complete set of a wooden stand and a meter-long shield on our website will cost you from 3,100 rubles. There will only be purchase and attach a paper target.
